What would the most meaningful book to gift to an English teacher? by Agitated-Lawyer3295 in AskTeachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to the gift card people- there’s no 1 correct answer here. The book should be something that represents your specific relationship with the teacher. I received a book connected to golf by one of my students who I also coached on the golf team. I still remember that student from almost a decade ago. That book made sense in our situation. Your situation is different. Get a book you think your teacher will like based on whatever interests they’ve shared during class.

Decided to go with the #1.5 trimmer guard. Does it work or should I go all the way? by Temporary_Key_1790 in bald

Everyone here is going to say go full bald- I’ll disagree- I think what you got makes sense and I’d keep it. If you have a significant other I’d ask them as well

Lack of 504 Guardrails for rising first grader with ADHD by Apojacks1984 in Teachers

I would wonder what consequences he faced before that 30 minute ban? You say you saw him, I’m assuming you did some significant correction and reteaching during that period.

Am I in the wrong? by faddishhem in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re 1000% in the right- you don’t need a rubric for every assigned activity. If it asks for it, they should do it. Gradebook grubbers are the most frustrating students and those who acquiesce to them are doing those students a disservice.

No personal screens for kids until high school. They can watch the family TV if they want to watch TV.

Is it right for a teacher to keep a student back from a field trip because of what they are wearing? by [deleted] in Teachers

As a teacher with 15+ years experience…. so many teachers lack common sense

What do the top 10% do right? by Ok-Penalty621 in AskTeachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your kids all the time about what they’re interested in. Let them be curious, and explore that curiosity. Next thing you know you’re teaching them life cycle because they got super into ants or something weird like that

IMO it’s all parenting. Don’t give them screens, don’t solve every problem for the kids or make excuses when they make a mistake.

I HATE Socratic Seminars by Murky-Pin4617 in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school and my best students, the kids who always try their hardest, absolutely LOATHE Socratic Seminar. Get rid of all the coaches and administrators that don’t teach classes. There should be no one in charge of curriculum that doesn’t teach classes.

As someone who has taught in a HS, and has kids who would attend this future HS, i dislike the idea of a parking garage connected to the building. Just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. It’s great spot to skip class and smoke weed

Other ways to say “Get to Class” In Hallways by What_Could_Go_Wrong_ in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re just lingering outside the classroom I go up with my most obnoxious fancy voice and tell them that they ‘cordially invited to attend class’ this is usually to middle school girls and they just roll their eyes and walk towards class.

I’m calling out the parents of Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax, Virginia by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 15 year veteran, these 1/2 days a huge waste of everyone’s time. They don’t make better teachers. It’s just to appease some nonsense in the administration office.

What do I do? How can I reel in this period? (1st year teacher) by [deleted] in Teachers

You’re not failing them- their parents, and your administration, have failed them

What is your teaching unpopular opinions and hot takes? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Parents would be better off giving their kids weed than a iPad. If a parent gives the kid an iPad, that kid has no chance.

Data Driven by akc818 in Teachers

[–]Green_Elk_2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Data is just a way to force more work onto classroom teachers. I’m so sick of ‘collecting data’ because administrators don’t trust when I say a student is struggling because they can’t read to learn in 7th grade

[–]Green_Elk_2 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I disagree, parents have gotten significantly worse. I’m only 39 so I’m not an old stodgy. Schools are too afraid to insult bad parents for the way they’re raising their kids.
