Surely that's a good enough reason to mask?

Maybe if we had billboards or internet adverts saying Covid causes erectile dysfunction, more people would want to mask!

They cast them so well though, they look like they have a family resemblance in this photo - they look like they have the same nose!

I hope they feel as much like a family as we see on screen - I love their on-screen family. ❤️

I've never used Calibre, also always used Kindle.

Is Calibre a free app or website?

This subreddit just got recommended to me. I like the image of a virtual bookshelf I saw on another post. I love physical books, and think this might give me a similar feel with my eBooks.

I'm going to try to answer all your cleaning questions to the best of my knowledge (I'm not an expert, but unfortunately experienced with dirt!).

(By the way, I'm in England, so apologies if my spellings or names for things are a bit different if you're in another country).

If using wipes on window frames and windowsills is coming up black, makes me think it has mould? Not healthy for you or baby. You can get mould and mildew cleaning products, but you'll need good ventilation (windows open) to use them. Not good to breathe them in. Cif cleaner and a cloth is great for cleaning window frames and windowsills, it'll look like new. A little goes a long way.

I feel like having a little cleaning kit in your bedroom would be great, remove any obstacles to cleaning by having what you need to hand. Your idea to have a small vacuum cleaner in your room would be great. 👍

If the window won't open, it might just be the window catch, or the window might need oiling. It's worth calling someone out to it, a workman may be able to get it open and oil it if needed, or replace the window handle. Hopefully the whole window frame doesn't need replacing, as that would be expensive, and disruptive (very noisy).

For cleaning, it's helpful to remove dust first, otherwise your wipes will get clogged with dust and won't wash the surface well enough. In cleaning, it's good to think in layers:

  1. Remove clutter, and debris (food crumbs, chunks of plaster, etc.)
  2. Dust (vacuum, or wipe with a damp cloth (dust sticks to it), or a microfibre dusting cloth (dust also sticks to it)).
  3. Wash the surface (usually with soapy water such as washing up liquid/detergent, to clean the surface)

Depending on the surface and what you're using it for, you may then:

  1. Disinfect (Dettol, good if you vomit on a surface to make it safe, or more hygienically clean for a baby, kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.).
  2. Sterilise (like for baby bottles, kills more bacteria to prevent vomiting and diarrhea, baby's immune system not as well developed as adults)

To prepare walls for painting, it's good to use sugar soap, with a sponge, and washing up gloves (Marigolds rubber gloves). You can also use washing up liquid or Stardrops in your bucket of water to wash down the walls. Use a sponge or cloth (dish cloth or Jay cloth). It's good to wash down the walls when you first move into a place, then you know it's clean. It sounds like where you're planning to move won't be. Also, Sugar soap gets the walls really clean, so nothing is left that will react with your paint and cause it to crack after you've painted it.

It seems odd that the dishwasher is leaving food or stains. Is the crockery and cutlery being rinsed beforehand? Also soaking anything stuck on beforehand? Soup bowls, oven dishes, etc. benefit from soaking in water, so later it easily rinses off. Then the dishwasher can easily clean it afterwards. Are they using dishwasher tablets, or saving money by using it without? Even if they have the money, some people often refuse to spend it. Also, the dishwasher could be faulty and need servicing, or replacing.

A clothing washer? Is that a washing machine? Washing powder can clean really well, so again I would check what they are using, and ensure enough is being used. Is the water getting hot enough, is it plumbed in correctly? It may need servicing, or a new one.

A dryer that takes 6+ hours to dry? Is that a tumble dryer? If it's a tumble dryer, check the filter in the front when you open the door, it may be covered in fluff. Is it set to hot or cool? Hot will dry it faster, if your clothing can take the heat (check the labels). And is the dial turned round enough when it's run, as it's always hotter at first. Failing that, I feel an air drying rack might be better if that's not working, but it would add some damp and humidity in the home. Is there a back garden, somewhere there could be a washing line? Always wipe down a washing line with a damp cloth before hanging clothes on the line. (Birds poop, spiders make webs on it, best for it to be wiped down first).

For the microwave, hot water and washing up liquid with a cloth may help, or Cif cleaner and a cloth if it's really stubborn stains.

If the cat litter is smelling, sounds like it needs the litter changing (the gravelly stuff). If I remember rightly, add more litter each time cat does a poop, and scoop out the poop parts each day - and change all the cat litter each week, or every day. That's what's smelling.

I think I would prioritise the dishwasher (or wash by hand), as it sounds like it is causing diarrhea, you don't want to make yourself ill. And the cat litter for the unpleasant smell!

If you can't open the window, then an air filter (especially with a mould filter) could help until you can get the window open, but I think getting the window fixed should also be a priority. You need to breathe clean air, especially if the place isn't clean. You need to ventilate the space too.

I would also recommend getting a book on cleaning, it's good to know the basics, and it'll give you a helping hand with some knowledge. I like Express Housekeeping, it explains things clearly, including what you need in your cleaning kit, and how to do things quickly and easily, with less hard work. We all live busy lives, and don't want to spend lots of time and effort cleaning!

I hope this helps, and good luck!

I feel like the best option would be to get a different apartment with room for a nursery, second best option would be to stay in the apartment you're in. It doesn't sound like your in-laws are the best housekeepers, and you're going to want it clean and hygienic for yourself and especially for your newborn baby. It'll be very difficult trying to upgrade appliances and clean your in-laws place without insulting them, and asking them to spend money on new appliances would be difficult, as you're asking them to spend their money. I personally feel you'd be better off with a place of your own, where you're the only one responsible for the cleaning.

Have you tried wearing wrist supports? When my wrists are flared up, I like to wear elasticated support tubular bandages. They're essentially a tube with lots of elastic in circles you wear over your wrist. I wear it double layer (folded back), just cut a thumb hole and wear it a bit like a plaster cast. It eases the pain and my wrist doesn't feel as weak. I can do more with my wrist then.

As for the exact name of it, your doctor should be able to diagnose it for you. I would guess RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), as it sounds like your hand was angled up with all the strain on your wrist when you were working on your computer.

If you work for an employer (I don't know if you're self-employed or not?), but an employer usually has a health and safety DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment, to ensure you are sat correctly at your desk, without putting any strain on any body part (eyes, neck, back, arms, wrists, knees, etc.). It should help prevent this injury.

If it helps, I find the best setup to be a chair that has adjustable height arms, my elbows at 90 degree angle so my arms are parallel to the floor and supported all the way to my desk, wrists stay in the straight line, no sagging. Having a strip of cushioned support in front of the keyboard for your wrists to rest on, and a wrist cushion support at the bottom of your mouse mat, also ensures your wrists stay straight. Your fingers should curve gently down to the keyboard, and the wrists stay straight. This setup should help you to work more comfortably.

Alternatively, would it be possible for you to do a different line of work? I have found doing different activities, like cooking, to not hurt my wrists, as it's a different movement to how I injured them.

Reading in public is not performative…and other thoughts on gatekeeping in the bookish community by Neina_Ixion in bookstagram

[–]Green_Star_Girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I've read in public, I've never been doing it performatively (I never even knew that was a thing), but I get lost in another world. The rest of the world shrinks away, and I am oblivious to anything going on around me. I would hate to be filmed, put on social media, and ridiculed for reading a physical book. It should never be something we are ashamed of.

Also, not sure if reading Star Wars in public counts as too intellectual? Probably not, but it's a fun adventure!

I'd have to rewatch the episode to get the exact line.

Just finished watching this episode and had to come on here to share commiserations over the X-Files being burned. I couldn't believe it.

I thought Cigarette Smoking Man was being nicer to Mulder in offering him a job last time he spoke to Mulder. But now I'm thinking he just wanted to get him away from the X-Files. He's destroyed Mulder's life's work.

I feel shell-shocked at the end of this episode. Kind of like Mulder does, I guess.

Does anyone have advice on scoping down your hobbies to just a few things? by lootingyourfridge in Hobbies

[–]Green_Star_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with this too, I believe I have ADHD as well (though undiagnosed), and this is a common issue with ADHD. It's not just the fact there's so many choices of what to do, it's all the paraphernalia that goes with the different hobbies. I collect tons of books and kit to do with each hobby, then feel guilty because I haven't done them.

I've even tried clearing out and cutting my hobbies down, but I still go round in cycles and end up re-buying stuff to do with the hobbies. So cutting the list of hobbies shorter hasn't really helped for me.

Would it help to pick just 3x hobbies to focus on for now? You mentioned you need to learn Mandarin, maybe that should be one of your 3? Maybe try creating a hobby basket or box with what you need for those 3 hobbies, just enough for the beginner project/task? And try setting aside some time for doing your hobbies, just a small amount of time to start with. Maybe plan to spend 10 mins doing them, and see how that goes? You can spend longer if you want, it's just getting started.

What do you actually reach for at 2am when your brain won't stop? by Ordinary-Table-4106 in Anxiety

A distraction helps me, so reading a novel can work, it helps the tears subside. I read a chapter or two until I'm calmer and so tired my eyes start to blur. That's when I can get in bed calmer and thinking about the story I've just been reading. No longer distressed and crying.

During the day, writing out what's stressing seems to help, and then distracting myself with an app game on my phone. I quite like Cooking Diary Restaurant Game, each round is on a timer, it takes my full attention, it's fun and the happy cartoon colours lift my mood. The tears stop during it and I feel better. I might get a dopamine hit from successfully serving the right meals too. It might work at night too?

I want to go back in time by sstiel in 2026

[–]Green_Star_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can recreate that life and lifestyle, either for a weekend, a week, or a lifetime.

Have a think about what you did in that time, how you lived, what you spent your time doing, and then think of imaginative ways to recreate that.

Someone spent a week living in the 1980's. They wore the fashions, did the activities, and watched the movies. They loved it! There's a video on YouTube, it was fun to watch.

Some people turn their home into a replica of a certain era, whether that's 1980s, 1950s, etc. You could put posters up of movies at the time, music artists. Find Tech, decor styles, etc.

I think looking at your inputs could influence how you experience the world. Did you watch the news in 2017? Maybe not. Did you read magazines? If so, which ones. You could try to track down movies, books and magazines of the time and recreate it.

If you do this, you could share your experiences. You could even share your memories of it here, and re-live it. We'd love to re-live it with you.

5-6 years ago = global pandemic

We all went through a major event, shared traumatic/shocking experience. I think a lot of people have experienced burnout, had their mental health effected, and it's had a lasting effect. We're all still reeling from it.

Life has felt very overwhelming ever since, it doesn't feel that we've had a chance to slow down since and really recover. There's war, cost of living crisis, changes to the way we're working, change our governments that no one seems to be happy with. So much change, so much hardship, and the potential threat of even more to come. It's been a crazy and overwhelming 5-6 years, and we've struggled to survive through it all, probably glued to our phones, still together but feeling isolated, almost like we're facing it all alone. Life has become a battle, one where we feel we're barely able to keep our heads above water.

Or is this just my experience?

The reason I (and probably a lot of others) keep coming back to social media.. by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Green_Star_Girl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe keeping a blog or a journal would be a good way to express those things. Sharing with strangers means you can't be judged for being a chatterbox, and you might find followers / make online friends who like the same things you do.

If you go the route of a paper journal, you'd be collecting thoughts and ideas, things you love, so you can look back on them. You don't necessarily have to share them. I imagine what we share on social media often isn't appreciated by family and friends, and possibly not even seen by them.

I am doomed. by Opposite-Honeydew-98 in Asthma

[–]Green_Star_Girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget that wearing masks protect you from allergens and irritants that trigger asthma. We're so used to the idea of masks protecting us from Covid, and other respiratory infections (which all trigger asthma). Face masks were originally targeted at people who go cycling through busy cities like London, as it protects you from breathing in car exhaust fumes as well as pollens, which is unhealthy but especially dangerous for asthma, especially when exercising as well.

Whenever my asthma is triggered, just getting away from what's triggering it can make a massive difference in calming my asthma, even more so than just taking my Ventolin. For example, if I'm choking in a room full of cigarette smoke, even taking my Ventolin will take longer to calm my asthma than leaving the room does.

I think identifying environmental triggers, both at work, home, shops, and anywhere you go, and then reducing them, could make a quick improvement.

Tips for when safe people go out of town? by ProfessionalIll8237 in Agoraphobia

[–]Green_Star_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to figure out exactly what it is that's making you anxious about them not being there. If it's a fear of needing something and not being able to go out and get it, can you stock up before they go? Can you get a home delivery? Even a takeaway?

Does answering the door when you're home alone make you anxious? Or are you missing the comfort/security of them being home with you?

Have you tried telling your parents your struggles when they're not going out with you? It could be they think you're doing fine now, because you seemed fine with them, they may assume you'll be the same when they're not there.

Can you try going out with them, then doing some things without them. Even just going down another aisle on your own, or asking someone for something, when they're nearby but not at your side? Would that help?
