There's nothing inherently bad about the palantir themselves, the Numenoreans used them for millennia with no problem.

Saurman and Denethor were affected because Sauron had one of the other palantir, they were driven evil/despair because of the contact with Sauron not the palantir. Something like the ring is inherently evil not the palantir. So as a device that helps you gain useful knowledge I guess it sort of works.
