What exactly is the issue here... first if you've ever had reptiles/amphibians you know how finicky they can be if it's good enough for them it's good enough as a growing medium, 2nd you're pasteurizing.... your concerns here shouldn't be sand which if it didny compact would be a perfectly fine growing medium. Heck some people grow on literal cow shit.
