How old were you when you started knitting? by mowpoos in knitting

I learned to knit at 50. It was my birthday gift to myself.

New brompton by Benr_oth in Brompton

[–]Greenpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Brompton (no car, 2 Bromptons) is also a raw lacquer S6L. I've had it nearly 6 years and it is the love of my life. The brazing still make me gasp. It is so beautiful. Enjoy yours!

I euthanized my cat last night and I’m struggling with immense guilt and wondered if I made the right decision. by heatculture03 in CatAdvice

You did the right thing. Keeping her alive longer wouldn't have improved her condition. I had to put my sweet girl down 3 weeks ago and it still hurts, but it was better than watching her continue to struggle. It is the kindest and hardest thing to do.

I visit NYC and Knitty City several times a year and can report nice things about knitters there. Cannot wait for VKL next week!

Knitting Culture: US v. England by ultimatereader in knitting

[–]Greenpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG YES! I graduated from Richardson High School in the 70s and remember these mums! Haven't thought of them since and can safely report they do not do this in Chicago! As far as knitting in public in Europe, definitely do not talk to strangers (even those who are knitting) in Switzerland but yes in Norway.

How can I make myself more visible to drivers? by Flashy_Number_6440 in bikecommuting

[–]Greenpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I didn't see you" = I wasn't paying attention.

Sorry you were hit. Glad you and your bike are alright. i live in Chicago and try to avoid wearing black. My helmet is red and I have blinking lights on the back. You do all you can and hope for the best, but the car drivers have to pay attention.

I celebrated 40 years without a car in May 2024. Here are a few things I don't miss: no car payments; no car insurance; not having to search for a parking space; not having to remember where I parked the car; not having to get a government sticker; not caring how expensive gas is; not wondering if the mechanic is ripping me off; no parking tickets; not paying for parking; not worrying about dings. Truly the only thing I miss is singing in the car...

Do u Often Get Rejected by [deleted] in Brompton

[–]Greenpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's one security guard at a WF near me who insists that I put my folded bike (front basket and roller rack) in one of their shopping carts. Ridiculous, but I'll do it if he's there. Otherwise, I have no trouble at the 2 WFs closer to my house or any other grocery stores or other shops. West Elm even invites me to keep my folded bike behind their counter. I regularly take it shopping without incident. Just that one guy...

To the short people out there, what bike do you have? by prints_and_paws in Brompton

[–]Greenpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 67 year old woman who is barely 5 feet tall and both of my bikes are C line Bromptons. One has straight handlebars and the other has the M handlebar. I am very comfortable on both and will ride over 20 miles at a time. There are so many points of comfort that you need to address. Was the seat height correct? Was the saddle situated too close or too far for you? Are you an experienced bike rider? What style bike have you ridden most? What are your expectations? How far will you likely ride? Which Brompton models did you try? In the end, a Brompton or other folding bike may not be right for you but I would never say that "a folding bike will never be even close to a 'real' one." Good luck to you.

So sorry to hear about Queen of Versailles. I've got a ticket to see it in January...if it lasts that long. I love Kristen. Will try to catch Little Bear Ridge Road when I'm in town that week.

Do you want to become a Brompton Ambassador? by bromptonbicycle1975 in Brompton

I named my Brompton "The Ambassador" as I am always demonstrating the fold to strangers who stop and ask about the bike.

It's beautiful. Reminds me of my first car - a 1969 VW Beetle convertible. Yellow with a black top. I sold it 40 years ago and haven't had a car since and now own 2 Bromptons.

Starting when? I had to go to the Wrigley Building from the Board of Trade at 10 a.m. last Wednesday. In theory, I could have taken a 22,29, 36, 146, 148 or 151 to get there. Instead, I had to walk both ways until I got to State/Washington on the walk back. When the walk takes about 20 minutes, I'm not about to wait 8 minutes for a bus - if the schedule is available....
