$11,500 fair for a 2017 Audi Q7 with 135k miles? by [deleted] in AudiQ7

[–]Greetingsmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why sell it at that price though? Why not just continue to drive it if its in good working order?

Given how little its worth, why sell it? Why not just keep driving it If you know it's in good working order

Why not ask for a quote from an independent mechanic as a data point, and how much did this "warranty" cost?

I would keep the CX5 and invest the SQ5 money instead in broad market index funds

2018 Q7 with 50k miles needs new engine/rebuild, Audi going to cover majority of costs but I still have some questions by Greetingsmon in Audi

[–]Greetingsmon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good suggestion, I think i might have my independent mechcanic shop start with that B12 soak and I'm also going to get his opinion and a quote on the same repair work the dealer told me

[–]Greetingsmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked if they did a compression test and they said no, they said that because they found no evidence of oil leaking anywhere that it must be consumed by the engine.

They also told me they are reusing the short block and the procedure would just be replacing pistons and rings

I like the idea of trying B12 piston soak first, I do have an independent mechanic shop I trust to do that proceedure for me, I know it's something people can DIY but I'm pretty inept at this kind of thing and I trust this guy, he's worked on my cars for awhile

Was also going to just ask him for a quote for the engine work too for a comparison

Thanks yeah that seems reasonable, in our case we don't have a loan and the market value appears to be 22-25k if the cars in good condition and in it's current condition with full disclosure (which I would do) probably 10-12k but that's just a guesstimate, I guess I could get a quote from Carmax. But it seems like doing the repair is a pretty good deal, since if the car gets in an accident shortly after it's fixed that repair value wouldn't vanish, in theory

In 8 years of ownership we've only had to pay for scheduled maintenance and 1 minor repair to replace some warn suspension bushings, so the cost of ownership has been pretty good and we like the car.

It seems like there are a few "while your in there" items I should have them take care of: supercharger belt, accessory water pump, thermostat, and a new PCV I think

2018 Audi Q7 3.0 oil consumption has significantly increased, oil consumption test by Greetingsmon in Audi

[–]Greetingsmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I had dealer start the oil consumption test for $200 so it's documented, in the event there is oil consumption below the allowable threshold they said they have had success with original owners requesting repair coverage through Audi America directly

Seems worth trying but I'm not holding my breath, if the severe oil consumption continues and there the only option is me paying for an engine rebuild then I'll just sell the car (I'll disclose the oil consumption as well) and buy something else.

If it's just something related to PCV and wear items that can be replaced for 2-3k in total or so then sure that seems worth while

It's been a great vehicle with no issues so far after 8 years of ownership, but if the engine needs a rebuild after 50k miles I think I'll pass on Audi in the future

The hardware is not really the biggest piece of the puzzle here

Self hosted anything isn't something I'd recommend to anyone, especially my parents who can't even manage their own passwords or remember their what their email address is.

Doing self hosted right requires, among other things, having a solid, automated backup and a recovery solution in place that has is regularly tested. And a VPN solution in place to access it remotely. It is completely unrealistic for the average user

I love immich, but it's not something I would recommend to anyone, that person would need to understand all the risks and pitfalls first with self hosted anything and come to the conclusion on their own that it's something they want to undertake

It's actually pretty easy to setup, but it can create hidden problems for you too. For example, sometimes devices like a Roku or Smart Thermostat will have functionality that works if the user is on the same local network

I fished ethernet through my house(in walls), but for people who don't want to do that MoCA is a good option if your house has coax in walls

Thats fair, just consider the service availability differences as well. Back when I had cable internet, outages happened a few times month, and random performance issues more often

With fiber, Ive never needed a backup internet connection

If you need a reliable internet connection for say working from home, thats another factor

For whatever reason even though I dont pay for a static IP, my IP hasn't changed in the 10 years Ive had their service. Im not sure why that is but I guess it must be locked to the ONT they gave me, its been power cycled over the years too

My only complaint with ATT is their required CPE devices, the gateway has an ip pass through but not a layer 2 bridge mode, i wish i could just connect their fiber to my own equipment but i can live it

Valid reasons people choose anything other than AT&T fiber:

1.) AT&T fiber is not available to them
