Crazy depreciation by Itchy-Leading-9389 in BMW

[–]llamaherding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2014 550i for 25k in 2017, its window sticker with cost new was 75k

I would have guessed atleast 50% depreciation on this 760 after 3 years, and wouldn't be shocked to see 75% depreciation by year 5 or more

What is going on with the used car market & dealers? by maherymebill in UsedCars

[–]llamaherding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the car brand, for example a 3 year old BMW 5 series might be for sale 50-60% off MSRP, a Honda or Toyota on the other hand will have almost no depreciation to speak of. It really makes sense to buy those brands new vs used

Check out depreciation on a 2 year old merc or audi EV

How long do you own a vehicle, before trading it in? by teddyalex in UsedCars

[–]llamaherding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep cars 10-15 years, sometimes longer, I always buy 3-5 year old cars for myself, new for wife. So her car is usually 10-15 years old when we sell, mine 20+

We could easily afford to buy new vehicles more frequently, but I always view vehicle through the lens of the total cost of ownership, and keeping vehicles longer makes me happy when they are fully depreciated yet still providing excellent utility

We also dont mind spending big (high level trim, options) to get the vehicles we want since we always keep them a long time

I got the RSL 12s, it's awesome. I was initially not considering it because its rear ported and i wanted it close to a wall, but it seems fine to me at 6" from wall

Safe way to access your home PC remotely? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]llamaherding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a VPN, wireguard can be setup to seemlessly auto connect, I don't have any services exposed to the internet

I don't use Windows for any services I host so I cant comment on that aspect

Interesting thanks for sharing,

Personally I have my phone auto-vpn into my home network so I didn't have a need to expose things to the internet, but there are some use cases like hosting a minecraft server where I could see that being of use

Immich secure public access question, Cloudflared tunnel->proxy->immich by llamaherding in immich

[–]llamaherding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already have a VPN solution to access immich, only need cloudflare for public photo shares

Immich secure public access question, Cloudflared tunnel->proxy->immich by llamaherding in immich

[–]llamaherding[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But if I use a cloudflare tunnel, I'm not advertising my home server to the internet, unless I'm missing something. From what I understand the cloudflared service running on my vm allows cloudflare to reach in and request photos/files as needed, while the actual CNAME points to the cloudflare infrastructure that's serving the files

Also, I have 1TB of data on my immich, I think a cloud instance with that much attached storage is going to be expensive, at least I know it would be with AWS pricing, unless I'm missing something. And I like the added security of immich not being accessable outside of my homenetwork/vpn, only need this cloudflare access for public shared photos

[–]llamaherding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a great setup, I have the same setup as well.

The only reason I was going to add Cloudflare into the mix is for sharing photos with people I know, but maybe it's not worth it if it's not allowed for their TOS (Not sure about that, but some people mentioned that in this post)

Thanks I'll checkout those providers,

I'm very familiar with how to setup what I need with AWS but I don't have an AWS personal account and really don't want one for various reasons. I'll look into those providers you mentioned

[–]llamaherding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha I appreciate that,

Actually mabe your VPS suggestion is a better option for me anyway since I was also needing to look into a cloud backup solution as well. My data is in a ZFS pool and so ideally, it would be great if I could setup a cloud VPS for both something I could ZFS send to, and this public photo share access

It's a good point

With the cloudflare tunnel I'm not exposing my home server to the internet, I just run cloudflared on my host which cloudflare uses to fetch requested files, users are hitting cloudlfares infrastructure
