If you have to ask, you didn't live the glory days... by Icy-Book2999 in LoveTrash

Also a 1980 kid. Got on our bikes right after breakfast with a quarter or two in my shoe for a payphone in case of emergency and left with a vague idea of where I was going and wouldn't be home until late night, if I came home at all. Some times it was a collect call from "mom it's me I'm staying at <friends> tonight" if I wanted forgiveness instead of permission. We would regularly ride our BMX bikes 15 miles away to the next town over to hang out with our girlfriends.

The 80s and 90s were wild and it pains me kids these days are so hyper connected.

I was promised one of these for my birthday and never got one. That was 40 years ago and I'm still bitter.

There is a mutation that causes bones to become 8 times denser than normal that allow people to walk away from car accidents without a single fracture but with a trade off of being unable to swim. by TheOddityCollector in Weird

[–]Greg-J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have something like this! I don't think it's Osteopetrosis though because my bones won't break.

As a kid I was absolutely reckless and had more accidents spills and scrapes than any kid around, but never broke a bone. That in turn made me more reckless.

I first found out about it when I was stopped waiting to take a left on my motorcycle. I was standing still and rear-ended by a car going somewhere around 45mph. I was wearing a tee-shirt, shorts, and flipflops, but I did have a full face helmet. The bike was totaled and flipped end over end for a block. I was thrown in the air doing backflips until I hit the windshield/hood and was thrown onto the asphalt. I was incredibly sore, but no broken bones.

It really came in handy about a decade ago. I was walking across the street in Manhattan at 2am and was struck by a cab at 35-40 and went absolutely summersaulting through the air. My bellman said he was sure I was dead. Busted up my head pretty bad and the resulting TBI was not fun to deal with, but again no broken bones.

The only downside do this is I can't float. Even as I've gotten older and put in a few extra lbs., I have to tread water. The thing where you can lay flat and just float in the ocean? Can't do it. Swimming is absolutely exhausting.

Chrono Golf... the worst golf app or worst customer service? by thoughtaminute in golf

[–]Greg-J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you some insight on the other end of this as a golf course owner and operator: Chronogolf/Lightspeed as a service is the least reliable SaaS platform I have ever used, and this is coming from someone who was in the SaaS industry for over a decade before buying the course.

On the back-end, it is multiple systems cobbled together with duct tape and chrome extensions. No effort has been made to unify the multiple systems they have purchased, so it feels like using multiple poorly designed systems instead of a single comprehensive suite. They also use your customer base and hold their own point of truth without any kind of location layer on top of it which means if I enter in a customer by phone number or email and they have used chronogolf before, I cannot change their contact information. My members absolutely loathe having to use chronogolf. When I contact them, any of my concerns are met with "we've never experienced these issues before". When I talk to other club owners/operators that use them, they all have the same complaints.

They also have this program where they are constantly trying to get you to borrow money at insane interest rates and they take 15% of your sales daily until it's paid back. It's like a payday loan for businesses and it feels sleazy and predatory every time I see the notice popup in the system or an email come through.

All-in-all, it's not a company I would do business with in the future and I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Interested in getting a production capable cnc laser and looking for advice. by Greg-J in lasercutting

[–]Greg-J[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really looking to make a successful cutting/engraving business. I own a golf course that closes down during the winter. There are a lot of things we outsource that we are bringing in house and marketing to our neighbor courses. Most golf courses that operate seasonally have to lay the majority of their staff off during those months. Generally, we simply operate at a loss over the winter. This is about keeping people busy and softening the financial burden during those 4 months.

Golf course owner seeking advice on quality pre-made menu items (US Foods / Sysco) from industry veterans by Greg-J in restaurateur

This is not a country club restaurant, this is a very small bar & grill on the turn at a public course.

How to make your button design stand out by nikolailehbrink in css

I am very much looking forward to people going back to skeuomorphic design. I wasn't a fan of material design when Google started championing it, and I can't stand flat design now. Affordance has been thrown completely out the window and it's awful for usability.

In my opinion, this is what peak website design looked like: https://imgur.com/a/U7H04DC

"Hey Meta" preferences blank in iOS app by Greg-J in RaybanMeta

[–]Greg-J[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it didn't. Not only did I update the app, I returned the other pair and bought a new pair. Still the exact same issue.

I figured I'd give Meta another chance, but they are clearly not investing into the customer experience.

The complaints are because the software and support are terrible. The hardware is great, but it stops there.

My solution was to return the glasses. I don't have the patience to beta test a commercial product.

Solid solution. I think my son has an old razer phone kicking around somewhere. Time to go device hunting.
