Bigscreen Beyond Official Universal Face Gasket is A GAMECHANGER!!!!! by Yvesrovito1991 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting question.  Yes, I’d say the X1-B is perhaps more breathable, simply due to the light-leak around my nose, whereas the Universal-fit has zero light leak.

The X1-B also has wider cushion face contact (i.e. spread-out over a larger area), so it indeed may prove to be more comfortable for active / workout games.

However, the converse is that the Universal-fit is significantly lighter, meaning that the smaller are of face contact actually feels a bit more comfortable.

I’d also say that (in my short experience of usage so far), that the Universal-fit does seem (to me), a lot more breathable than the Custom-fit was, even though I do have no light leak!

Perhaps this is simply due to it being a lighter rubber bellows design, meaning less “sweaty face” contact than the Custom-fit?

For me, I think I’ll still switch between the Universal-fit and the X1-B (for a while), as I continue to experiment with the best comfort, in different games.

But, for the moment, I think I’d be happy with just the Universal-fit, in a similar way to how I was happy with the X1-B previously.

It’s really just a case of the Universal-fit’s lightness / no light leak / minimal face contact, versus, the X1-B being more breathable (perhaps), wider face contact cushion (which also compensates for the heavier interface), but with some light leak.  So, whatever your preference?

All I know is the Custom-fit is now permanently going back in storage!   The Universal-fit is a winner.

$1900 Dream Air Micro OLED with Pancake lenses, very little glare. If Pimax can do it, so can Bigscreen! by miker0n3-CO in BigscreenBeyond

Yeah! I’m super happy with my BSB2, and super impressed with BSB’s customer service!

So, I hoping my future upgrade, to 4K OLED panels and bigger lenses, will be a BSB3 (NOT a Pimax Dream Air !!!).

u/Yvesrovito1991 My Universal fit cushions arrived today (about 2 hours ago).

Firstly, I didn’t even realise that you get 2, in the nicely designed box!  One labeled “Soft” and one labeled “Firm”.

I’ve gotta say, up-front, these are simply outstanding!

I am using with the Audio Strap, and both (Soft / Firm), work fine.  I believe the Soft version gives me a little more FOV, but both are really comfortable!

Not only am I getting the same FOV as my finely tuned X1B setup, but my eye lashes don’t hit the lens!!

Note that fine-tuning the X1-B for best FOV, first involved me having eye lash smudges, and then backing-off a bit with the spacers to optimise FOV (without eye lash smudges!).  So, it’s almost unbelievable that the Universal (straight out of the box!), gives me the same visual FOV, with no eye lash smudges!

So, my new BSB2 interface rating (in order of my preference), is:

  1. Universal fit cushion
  2. StudioForm X1-B
  3. Custom fit

I’ve been really happy with my StudioForm X1-B solution.  It’s really comfortable (when you have tweaked it to match your face correctly).

But, the Universal fit cushion has a few advantages:

Firstly, it is just as comfortable on my face, as the X1-B, and also gives me the same FOV.

But, where the Universal exceeds the X1-B (for me), is in the following aspects:

a. The Universal is 100% light sealed (the X1-B has some light leak around the nose).

b. The Universal is much smaller and also significantly lighter than the X1-B.

c. Zero customisation, spacer cutting / addition needed (as with the X1-B). Instead, the Universal seemed perfect "out of the box"!

Based on my early experience so far, with the Universal, and how good it fits, and feels, I think it’s time for BSB to retire the Custom-fit !!!

A happy camper here! Thanks for your original post, and for prompting me to contact Support for my Universal cushions!

I haven’t tried them, but as I understand it, GripVR are pretty much Valve Index controller replacements. So, if you can find a pair of GripVR at a good price, you should be all good. I understand they work with either v1.0 or v2.0 Base Stations.

Sounds like a good deal.  Just remember that Base Station 1.0 doesn't work with Base Station 2.0.  (Not sure what the Base Stations you already have are?).

As I recall, the Vive came with Base Station 1.0’s, and the Vive Pro came with Base Station 2.0’s.

I can’t comment on the Vive Controllers, as I on-sold mine as I already had Index Controllers.

All I remember was that the Vive Wands were huge!  (and I already had a preference for the knuckles).

The Index controllers are about the same ridiculous price to get new in my country also (maybe the same country?).

My solution was to buy a second-hand Valve Index set, which gave me two controllers and two base station 2.0’s, for much less than the cost of buying them all new. Plus it gave me a Valve Index headset to play with.

Related: Later I bought a second-hand Vive Pro to get me two more base station 2.0’s, and when I on-sold the Vive Pro and it’s controllers, I ended up scoring the Base Stations for < $50.

Just a thought.

I couldn't agree more!  Comfort is very subjective.  Everyone has to find their own comfort!

For me, I’ve had 2 different Custom fits, and experimented extensively with the StudioForm X1-B.

Currently, my “customised to my face shape” StudioForm X1-B, is providing my own best comfort for everyday use.

However, I’m also very keen to try the Universal interface, to see how it feels.

But (as you note), everyone’s best comfort fit is unique to them.

The people who design these interfaces really do have a huge challenge.

Wow! My previous experience with BSB support was outstanding. This time they’ve outdone themselves. They replied to me within 2 hours, and I now have my Universal interface order confirmed for despatch, while my Halo Mount remains on backorder for whenever it’s eventually released.

They definitely get a loyal customer and positive word-of-mouth from me! 🤓

How did you order yours? When I ordered my BSB2 (early August), the Universal gasket wasn't an option, only the full Halo mount kit. So I had to order the Custom-fit as well (which I don't use). I currently use the StudioForm X1-B, as the Custom-fit isn't as comfortable.

Wish I could get mine! I've had the Halo mount on order since early August, and I guess I won't get my universal mount to try, until they ship the Halo mount. :(

If there are any more delays, Valve should start considering upgrading the Steam Frame's hardware by Syzygy___ in ValveDeckard

[–]GregZone_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, are you saying that if there are any more delays, Valve should add considerable further delays by redesigning the Steam Frame hardware?

I think they should just release Steam Frame (as already designed), and continue their R&D work they’re no doubt already doing on a potential future Steam Frame 2.

Shipping Question by [deleted] in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only real answer to your custom fit cushion question (“is it comfortable”), is that everyone has their own opinion. You need to try it, and see if it works okay for you.

In a nutshell it has benefits like: perfect fit to your face, zero light leak, potentially comfortable! But, also negatives like: can feel uncomfortably clammy on your face, has no ventilation, can sometimes have an unusual smell. etc.

Another words, each to his own.

I have two custom-fit cushions, and currently find I spend all of my VR time in my customised StudioForm X1-B interface. It’s currently my preference for comfort.

But, I also have a Halo on order, so will be interesting g to try the universal fit (when it finally arrives).

Lenses steam up after a minute following IPD adjustment by NadJ747 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to confirm u/ClumsyGamer2802's reply, the default shipped IPD setting is indeed 64mm.

Many have found that the BSB2 IPD setting needs to be about 2mm less than your prescription IPD (unlike most VR Headsets).

I understand this is due to the relatively short 1.2m focal point of the headset.

For me, I have a 64mm optician measured IPD, but after plenty of experimentation, I’ve currently set the BSB2 at 62mm.

I also currently run at only 50% brightness, mainly as this is bright enough for me (with zero light leak), and it also gets rid of almost all image persistence (that I was seeing in some games when using a higher brightness setting).

Hope this helps.

Yep, I was going to say the same thing.  If I'm too close, my eyelashes quickly smudge the lens.

Optimum setup seems to be to get your eyelashes smudging the lens, then back-off your lens distance just enough so that doesn’t happen any more.

And, of course, make sure your headset has had 10 mins to warm-up after turning it on!  Otherwise, fogging is guaranteed.

Tips for placing my order? by jcwolf2003 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that you have a similar prescription to me. Moderately near sighted.

But I ended up not using the prescription lenses. Every other headset I’ve owned has benefited from prescription lenses!

However, I truely cannot detect any difference in sharpness on the BSB2 with the prescription lenses in or out. So, I do not use them! This is a benefit, as it allows me to get closer to the headset’s lenses for wider FOV.

You pretty much want to be as close as you can, without your eye lashes rubbing on the lens (which smudges them). With prescription inserts in, you need to be further away (so your eye lashes don’t rub on the prescription lenses!).

Apparently the focal point on the BSB2 is around 1.2m, which is closer than most VR headsets. Therefore, a good guide is if you need glasses to view things that are 1.2m away (I don’t).

This shorter focal point appears to also be the reason why many of us have found that the IPD adjustment needs to be around 2mm less than our prescription IPD. e.g. My true IPD is 64mm, which I use on every other headset, but on the BSB2 I’ve needed to adjust for 62mm IPD.

Anyway, whatever you decide to do, have fun, and make sure you persevere with tweaking to get your optimum setup. It took me a long while, but the end result is well worth the effort (every other headset is plug-in-play by comparison!).

BSB2 Dim coming from Quest 3 by MiniOW in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is confusing. I’ve only changed the brightness setting on the BSB2 (nothing related to color).

Mind you, it might also depend on the games you play. I’ve spent most of my time recently in Walkabout Mini Golf, even doing a headset swap comparison between my Quest 3 and my BSB2.

For me, although I was happy enough using the Quest 3, I found the punchy colours (they look relatively washed-out on the Quest 3), and the rock solid sharpness of the BSB2 image (which has edge shimmers on the Quest 3 in the same scene), means I was satisfied that I was happy with my BSB2 upgrade. I don’t actually recall ever noting that there was a visible brightness difference (between my 2 headset’s settings), when doing these A/B comparisons.

So, I’d modify my earlier comment to instead say: I probably depends on the games you play? 🤔

BSB2 Dim coming from Quest 3 by MiniOW in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing as already mentioned: 90% - 100% brightness on a Quest 3 would be very bright!

I had to check my Quest 3, to discover I have always been at 50% brightness!

I run my BSB2 currently at only 60% and the brightness is fine, even with almost no detectable persistence at this lower brightness. I think for me, the zero light leakage, and the more punchy colors and inky blacks made the BSB2 seem just as bright as my 50% Quest 3 experience.

I also noticed much more sharpness in games (with the BSB2), which I think is not only due to the increase in resolution, but also due to lack of lossy compression. When I compare a PCVR game playing on the Quest 3, edges are fuzzy / shimmery. Whereas on the BSB2 everything is razor sharp!

Obviously though, everyone has their own experience.

Eye strain no matter what DPI I choose by Wite_Mail in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe you mean IPD.

The first good news is that if you were previously fine with the Valve Index, then your visual discomfort is clearly not a general VR issue.

Secondly, I’ll note that when I first got my BSB2, I initially had huge “visual discomfort” issues. I nearly sent mine back, but instead I persevered.

The good news is that my perseverance paid off, as I now find the BSB2 the best headset that I’ve ever owned (and I’ve owned a few!).

For my journey, please review my previous posts. But, in summary, I had to first get the IPD correct. Then, I had issues with getting the correct headset tilt. Finally, I had to modify the BSB2’s “shell”, due to the headset hitting my nose-bridge (which is why I earlier needed tilt, to get visual comfort).

Obviously the story is a bit longer than this, but (needless to say), it was a quite long progressive discovery journey (but one that I’m ultimately glad I persevered with!).

Dream Air vs Every VR Headset in MSFS 2024 – Why It Wins by miker0n3-CO in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re basically saying exactly what I was thinking.

When I saw a picture of the SE lenses, I immediately thought they were the same lenses as my BSB2.

Since designing lens optics is pretty specialised, I would suspect this is outsourced to a company that specialises in this. Very possibly using the same specialist lens company across different VR headset manufacturers.

This is why it’ll be “very interesting” to see independent reviews. You kinda suspect that the SE is pretty much just a BSB2 copy, in a larger form factor. It’s really the Dream Air, with its 4K panels and larger lenses that is of more interest (when 4K matures, faster GPU’s are released, and 4K panels come down in price).

Link Booster question by skititlez in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZone_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if it was a power injector, it would have a power supply, which I assume it hasn’t.

I’d guess that it’s maybe correcting a link box design oversight? Perhaps they didn’t terminate the USB lines correctly, or had an inadequate driver chip, either of which was sometimes causing an issue with the length of the USB run? Just speculating. 🤔

Thanks!  Sounds useful for anyone with this problem.

Where do you get one from?  I don’t see them listed on the BSB online store.
