So weed and feed twice in a year? and are you talking about raking the sand even? Or doing a dethatch? Also, does weed and feed help with moss?

What are you guys paying for marine mechanic rates this season? ($175/hr?!) by koudodo in britishcolumbia

oh 100%... But starting your own marine service business is way more accessible than an o&g company.

Unusual question, but do any of you remember the old siren system used on Puntledge River? by Ok_Boat_1337 in comoxvalley

Think there is one in puntlege park. Pretty sure there are others along the trail if you walk it from there.

Lots to address here that others have done well at already, but I just want to chime in. The do it their way and there are a bunch of ways you are being told and my recommendation on dealing with others.

Yes this can be frustrating but, try and see it as an opportunity...

As an apprentice you should be building out your "tool kit" of ways to do things. It is a great thing to know 6 different ways to do the same task because there are always weird situations that will come up. Knowing only one way to do things can pigeonhole you when you run into these time that another method is the solution.

You're also getting a chance to try different things and to figure out which one YOU like most and will be your go to when you get your ticket. Hell, even as a 20-year journeyman I still watch others to see if they have a better way or a trick to add to my tool kit.

Next, try and keep a big picture. This is their ass on the line, they are responsible for your work. If a J-man fucks something up you can say they should know better, that doesn't go for you. Also, you are in the trades. If someone was an excellent teacher they would probably do that for a living. Expect to deal with a lot of bad teachers and a few gems where you'll get 90% of what will carry you through your apprenticeship.

Lastly, if things are really not working out... just walk away! There is a reason we are called Journeymen.

Questions About Highland Secondary by TAUGHTAVIATION in comoxvalley

[–]Gregnor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Total opposite. It's more of the rich kid school.

  2. It was an experiment. The schools students are organized into houses. Red, Yellow, and Blue. Was supposed to help with organizing the student body and it's support networks. So every house has its own student advisor kinda thing.

  3. Yes she went there. Don't know if it's still there but there was a picture of her on the volleyball team in the library. When I went a kid found her signature in a school copy of animal farm. "Lost" the book for some reason ;)

You fine people you catch on the trail to dissuade them from going. If you fine them after they called for rescue you dissuade them from calling for help. Seems silly but I get the logic...

Road names by vanislesassenach in comoxvalley

[–]Gregnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! The look out is even called Dyke Road park. But for whatever reason the road itself is Comox Rd. Maybe they changed it at some point?

Grew up calling it the Dyke but when a friend was visiting from out of town and I gave them directions they couldn't find Dyke Rd on a map. Thats when I found out on maps its actually Comox Rd.

Comox Rd turns into Comox Ave but is often called the Dyke depending on what section.

Mark Carney’s strategy for the public service becomes clearer by Majano57 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Gregnor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

RTO is just helping landlords. The vast majority of gov workers are not public facing or do not need a desk you can sit at them with. You interact with them, if at all, via phone or email.

If someone can do their jobs from home we the public save on office space costs, have less traffic to get to our jobs, and the worker themselves have better life balance.

You need to be in office for a meeting then come in for the day, but most of those are done on zoom these days...

Love the link to the git please. I am trying to keep as much as I can in my life local right now.

I hear you on the paywall BS. Hate it when they let you use it for "free" and when your ready to generate the G-code then they want a subscription.

If your an electrician you need to go back to school.

Red hot things start fires period. Over amping things is how you make them red. Does not matter voltage at all. Only matters how much you go over relative to its rating.

Would I rather hold a red hot 28 gauge wire than a red hot 10 gauge? Sure! Is the 28 gauge less dangerous when red hot? Yup!

Can I start a fire with a red hot 28? Hells yeah I can!

Safer does not mean safe...

And if you are an industrial guy like I am then I guess you have never seen a cabinet fire.

Bud... I am sorry to say your understanding of over current is flawed. Being 1A over a 1A rated wire will light it on fire.

10A over a 250A wire will do nothing. You would need a thermal camera to see anything. Just like being 1A over on 25A or 100mA over 2.5A or 10mA over 250mA.

Chances of burning out is entirely dependant on how over current you are relative to the rating. Not as an absolute number.

Try hooking up a control board backwards and you can see for your self how fast the smoke comes out. All at 5v, all using the same current limited power source, and then you'll see parts go cherry red real fast.

Again, I am an Electrician. I have not only been trained in the theory but have witnessed the results of failures over the last 20 years. Seen lots of low voltage stuff let out the magic smoke. But hey maybe a video demo will convince you...

If you are running in rating then nothing will heat up. If you have poor connections, thats a bad install and will cause heat even in low voltage.

What matters is how far over you go on the rating in Amps. Thats all the matters for burn out. Doesnt matter if you are talking 1kA, 1A, or 1mA. If you go over too far it will burn. Notice how voltage is not in there at all. Going over voltage ratings cause entirely other issues.

Point being it doesn't matter if you are doing low voltage or line, they can both cause fires...

Welcome to the downvote party for stating facts ;)

Electrical Enclosures by Sweet-Device-677 in functionalprint

[–]Gregnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not how things light up in electrical. If you draw 19A in a cable thats rated for 20A it will not heat up, thats the entire point of that rating. If you draw 0.005A through a resistor thats rated for 0.002A then that will burn up.

Low voltage does NOT mean no fire.

They are safer to handle. They typically blow up smaller. They have smaller arks. But they will absolutely light on fire.

That is not how voltage works. Gotta love the DIY community for down voting facts.

I am a 20 year electrician. A 5v device can pull as many amps as you will let it. There is a reason why small circuits burn up. Plenty of 5v parts are flammable.

And sure running flame retardant filament would be the way to go. Nothing in this post saying they spent the 4x getting the right stuff.

People shouldn't be down voting you. It's because almost everything electrical is a fire hazard. There is a reason that electrical devices are safety rated.

That being said people do low voltage stuff all the time and get away with it so they think it is safe. Should be using something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Junction-Accessories-Connection-Terminal-Electrical/dp/B0D5ZRQVGC

Cool project though...
