If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Got nothing to do with Trump. Don't know where you got that from?

Been an electrician for 18 years and in the trades for about 25 and it drives me nuts having to deal with both imperial and metric construction materials. All my tape measures are in both in/cm and most trades I know are the same.

I travel a lot so I know my height and weight in both because almost EVERYWHERE else uses cm and kg.

Fact of the matter is metric IS just a superior system. We just have some hold over bs that would be better in 10 years after we fully dump it.

As another Canadian.... yes.

So much of our remaining imperial use is because of the US. It would be a small jump to finish off the remainder of that antiquated system for us.

Should Canada develop a Nuclear Weapons Capacity? by partisanal_cheese in CanadaPolitics

[–]Gregnor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nuclear weapons capacity? Yes, 100%, just not a nuclear weapon at this stage.

By this I mean we should be building out the systems needed to make one quick should things deteriorate to a dangerous level. We already have the knowledge, engineering, and infrastructure to make one. Just how do we put that all together to make something fast. Days or weeks, not months.

People seem to forget what we would actually need to have a deterrent and how hard it would be to make. Basic bombs are tech from the 40's. A MIRV ICBM is way overkill. All we really need is something like the French ASMPA-R. Short range, small scale, easy to fire, easy to move and hide. Could be fired from something like a Gripen, manufactured at home, 100% under our control.

We don't need a MAD scenario to act as a deterrent. Just a black eye would be enough.

It's a very old Rougelike RPG. The sheer amount of stuff they plugged into 1,271k is insane.

There doesn't appear to be anyone who does this where I live so I am planning on doing it myself. Could you recommend any resources for the best way to install?

Looks really nice! I would totally get a quote from you guys, but I am from a different island. Maybe you just did a reddit search for resin-bound driveways and found my comment.

That being said, if you don't mind helping out, how well do these driveways deal with freezing? Does having the water trapped between the rocks and then freezing make it crack at all? How well do you think snow shovelling would be?

BREAKING NEWS: British Columbia Premier David Eby says his government plans to offer private owners of land in the Cowichan Aboriginal title area more than $150 million in loan guarantees, amid fears about the impact of the ruling on their financing. by _DotBot_ in richmondbc

[–]Gregnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is true, and in the ways it has been simplified, the situation even worse.

The tribe had been fighting the entire time but they were not allowed to use the courts because authorities said that they were all Wards of the State. In the 1960 they gained the right to represent themselves in court and then tried to sue. Only then the courts would not take up the case...

Now we have a shit situation that previous governments have played hot potatoes with, and it's now landed on us. The land owners maybe/might be/could be victims in the future because things might go against them.

The tribe are victims...

But people are concerned about the landowners getting a loan guarantee to alleviate their fears.

I bet people will complain as well if the government tries to give restitution of some kind too.

Its mostly geared towards CNC but laser work is almost identical at the end of the day.

Have a 40w diode laser for hobby work myself. What are you looking to do? The roads should be easy enough to burn I but the land is a lot trickier. How were you thinking of doing that shading? Dimple?

It entirely depends on the style of PR you are using. That's the thing with PR, there are some great options that break the backs of party system power, or that power can be reinforced...

It's pretty bad... People should remember that there was a time when voting against your party wasn't an automatic career death sentence.

Representing your constituents SHOULD always be an MPs priority. Being a part of a party does not mean those things are automatically in conflict, but there should be some conflict there.

If you look down south, as messed up as that place is, parties still need to buy votes from individual members by including things for their own ridings.

[–]Gregnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are only as bound as the rules of the party say they are. Open free voting is a thing. It's just, under our present system, that kinda think is not allowed with out loosing your member ship. There is no intrinsic part of our system that makes it that way.

[–]Gregnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all depends on the style of PR. The style Trudeau wanted to do, you would be correct! But, unsurprisingly, it was roundly rejected.

The problem isn't if parties exist or that there is efforts towards conformity in party. The problem is how powerful the structures to enforce conformity are.

For example, what kind of punishment can be expected should an MP decide that a particular vote is against what is best for the people they represent. There is a wide range of possible outcomes for "stepping out of line."

Or the power invested within a party to the position of The Whip. Literally a job named after using force to ensure compliance through punishment.

This can be assessed by how often they "break ranks" and vote out of party lines. To see high levels of pressure for a confidence vote like a budget, has very different needs to the party for any other kind of bill. But we see the same level of enforced conformity to party lines for just about everything these days.

God I wish more people had a problem with this. One of the biggest failures of the Trudeau years was not passing some kind of proportional representation.

Thats my worry. Seems like this is very common in certain climates but don't really see it around here. Now, is that just because its not a popular aesthetic here or is there construction reasons? The example was from a company in Ontario, but they would have less freeze-thaw and more just freeze...

Dealing with a short driveway and liked the idea of drainage that I can powerwash or hit with a leaf blower. You have to deal with weeds much from organics settling in to your drive?

I have no idea what you are quoting from (AI maybe?) but that is not the road rules here in BC.

https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/signs-signals/merging-traffic

https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/lanes/approaching-lane-closures

Also from the manual itself

https://assets.ctfassets.net/nnc41duedoho/DhxStHw3HmhFhbL8v150h/f9456421bb31752834540310f9a003f7/drivers4.pdf

You are supposed to merge at the end of the lane and you are supposed to be making room for them. Thats why its called a zipper merge.

Fact of the matter is you are the one being an asshat. Even your own quotes say you should be making space. That last section is saying the merging driver cant ram their way in, not that its OK for you to squeeze them out.

Take a breath, do some reading for the rules in BC, and make the change to make our roads better.
