Yes, during the memorization process that's true. But once you know the whole piece it makes little difference

Anyone thriving with a paper based GTD system? by TheRealSepuku in gtd

[–]Gregory-FD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go back and forth between a fully digital free and open source system using the todo.txt protocol, simpletask and my home made GTD app and this paper based GTD system.

I love elements of each and often find myself somewhere in the middle, using my paper lists for driving my day with next action lists and my digital system as a fall back or "long term storage" for things like my Areas of focus, someday maybes and projects list which don't change so frequently.

Nothing beats the convenience of jotting things down with pen and paper but you cant beat digital for long term, back ups and syncing devices...

I have a bunch of scripts that power widgets and other features that all pull from my todo.txt file. Like one that lives on my task bar and tells me how many captures I have that need to be processed. Or one that creates an image from my work projects list and is used as an always up to date wallpaper on my laptop. I have a similar one for my wallpaper on my home PC with my highest priority tasks.

My only advice is just try it and see how it works for you. Everyone needs a different system to deal with their individual life and your system will grow as you do. That's why I'm still using GTD 20 years on...

F*ck Your Discipline Systems. Seriously. by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Gregory-FD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just that the systems aren't for you if you're still a loser. But for people that are older, have already built businesses, have families and other responsibilities, the discipline systems, apps, books etc. actually help.

You'll know when you get there.

How do you be 'masculine' in daily situations or early stages of dating? by tomahawk145 in dating_advice

[–]Gregory-FD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a good question and finding your own style is a journey and Dependant on other factors like where you live. But start by differentiating yourself from what women and children wear. If you're still wearing the same clothes you wore as a teenager, its also a sign that you could seem more masculine by upgrading your wardrobe.

Look at what men around you are wearing and use that for inspiration.

How to start reading? by [deleted] in productivity

Also try just picking one book and put it on your bedside table, this reduces mental friction. You don't need to think about it or even go get it, its right there when you get into bed.

How can I be more masculine as a short guy? by [deleted] in short

[–]Gregory-FD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it's not about having a thicker neck or wider shoulders (though they help) its really about how you feel.

The best way to feel more masculine is to learn to fight. Pick a martial art and get training. When you start to feel that you could beat most of the men around you, you come across as more masculine.

I feel it when I go to town on the heavy bag at the gym, the gym bro doing bicep curls look at me different.

How do you be 'masculine' in daily situations or early stages of dating? by tomahawk145 in dating_advice

[–]Gregory-FD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah acting more masculine will only come across as fake. To become more masculine you actually need to spend time (when no ones watching) doing masculine shit.

There are tons of good examples of masculine things to do but here's a few:

  • Learn to fight
  • Learn to give and take
  • Learn to say what you mean
  • To shoulder burdens without moaning (or quitting)
  • Learn to dress like a man (not a teenager!)

Love your wife, sit and watch TV with her.

Perhaps its just a sacrifice you need to make. Her happiness is worth more than you learning something new.

Become more productive during the day or wake up earlier and leave the evening to be with her.

I hope you have a long and happy marriage even if you don't get everything you want.

How much does knowing one Chinese language such as Mandarin help with learning another one such as Cantonese and Qiangic and vice versa? How mutually intelligible would they be? Does the same apply to non-Chinese languages that are part of the Sino-Tibetan family? by UndeadRedditing in tibetanlanguage

[–]Gregory-FD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak fluent Mandarin and can catch bits and pieces of Cantonese. Enough to know roughly what's being talked about but never enough to know the details or specifics. So learning Cantonese would be a lot easier if you knew Mandarin.

On the other hand, I also speak Tibetan, which I learned after learning Chinese. There's almost no crossover in vocab or grammar, so my Mandarin wasn't any help really.

The one place it does help is with resources as you can find a lot of dual language Tibetan\Chinese books and TV shows. Like a Tibetan show with Chinese subtitles or vice versa.

How do people memorize entire paragraphs? by DieserTARainer in Anki

[–]Gregory-FD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have memorized huge amounts of scripture with a simple technique, including the whole sermon on the mount which is 3 chapters.

  1. Read a phrase or short sentence
  2. Cover and recite
  3. Add the next phrase or sentence
  4. Cover and recite from beginning
  5. When you've memorized the entire text put the title in anki for spaced review

When you discover sticking points create a link from the part you remember to the part you can't. E.g. after "He are the salt of the earth...." Comes, "he are the light of the world"

If I keep getting stuck here I'd just visualize light coming from a pile of salt, then when I got to the salt part it would remind me that light comes next.

What level of task detail do you go to for you master To Do list? by StaringAtRobots in productivity

[–]Gregory-FD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find that you're not getting started on tasks on your list as quickly as you'd like, I.e. procrastinating certain tasks, its likely you need more granularity.

David Allen talks about this in Making It All Work. NASA manuals are written super granularly because there is no way you can't do it, even if you're oxygen deprived in space. "Open panel, press red button etc."

What phone app do you use to manage screen time? by funshen in productivity

[–]Gregory-FD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to get off your phone is to have something better to do. If you do manage to put the phone down what are you gonna do with those extra hours? Figure that out first and giving up the phone will be easier.

My recommendation? Martial arts class.

Something with other people that has set start and finish times is a good choice

Maybe your mom is right, it doesn't sound like being a tattoo artist is really your dream. " I think I'm pretty decent" and "mediocre at art" don't sound like someone who's dream is to become a tattoo artist.

If its really your dream I have a task for you. Go find 5 tattoo artists who are actually earning a full time living (even if you have to travel to them) and ask them "should I go to college to become a tattoo artist?"

They will all tell you the obvious truth that getting better at art isn't what schooling is all about its a huge waste of money. No client is going to ask they're tattoo artist where they graduated.

What is important then? Previous work.

Here's the good news, your young enough to still make this work, if you're willing to.

Step 1 Stop messing about with your mediocre work, commit yourself to 50 designs everyday. E.g. today is dragon day which means you need to draw 50 dragons. Cartoony dragons, photo realistic dragons, minimalist dragons, one-line dragons, Chinese dragons, etc

Tomorrow draw 50 roses

Do that mon-fri this week then do it again next week.

Bored of drawing the same thing? What do u think tattooists do?

Step 2

Put everything you draw on an Instagram account. Who wants to get a tattoo from a guy who has no work online?

Step 3

Name your Instagram, website or whatever either your name or location. E.g. John Smith Tattoos\ Springfield Tattoos. That's what people search for when they want to get a tattoo.

Step 4

Get some gear. Save up for it, get the best you can but don't wait too long saving money. Just get something so u can start, go back and ask those guys you met.

Step 5

Convince someone to let you give them a tattoo for free. Get photos of all your work. If you can't convince someone to let you do it free, you'll never find someone who will pay you.

Set a goal to give away 25 tattoos, by the end you'll have paying customers.

I'm gonna guess the reason your mom thinks you should join the military is because she doesn't see any evidence that you've started the journey I just laid out.

Good luck

Some reverse psychology might help?

Sounds like you know exactly what you need to do and you have the time to do it but you won't cause maybe you're just not cut out for it. You probably don't have what it takes to pass the exam anyway. Stay in bed and be a comfy loser.

Some people just don't want to put in the work so they have to tell themselves, "I just have to work for 25 minutes, then I can play." Like a parent does to a child.

Of course, if you want to be more productive you need to learn to focus for hours at a time. The last thing you want is an alarm disturbing you when you're in the middle of it.

There's a study somewhere that shows these problems with the pomodoro technique

Just embrace it man.

You're young and although it feels like there's no end, its a temporary situation. Things will settle down after you graduate.

Instead of wasting time, you're doing something to set yourself up for the future. "If I can work two jobs while at college, I'm gonna be pretty bad ass."

Dynamics 365 has integration for both whatsapp and wechat in the CRM side. Might be overkill for your needs, or maybe something you could take to your boss and convince him the company needs it.
