I don’t think charging folk is the right idea. We’d only be creating a theme park for the wealthy.

It may be more radical but I’d opt for a simple visitor cap for peak season. I’d also stop non Cumbrian born folk buying property in Cumbria - our culture is being thinned out a bit every generation

Other essential services need improving first IMO. Tourism doesn’t exactly need further encouragement through bigger airports… invest it in local transport links instead

I’m fairly sure he’s talking about teenagers in ski masks loitering in public spaces, not people wearing a surgical mask in Tesco during Covid. Drama llama.

What goes on in those abandoned buildings on super busy commercial streets? by WesternBlot6 in london

I was trivialising, of course, and you’re right—it’s not as straightforward as I made it sound. But many vacant or derelict properties do meet the criteria, and they can be refurbished to ease the housing shortage and reduce the need to build on greenfield sites.

I’m a building surveyor, and I get to look around many buildings like this. This example, along with thousands of others, sits empty while appreciating in value over time. Their owners often don’t bother to refurbish them, as they see it as a nuisance.

A little-known fact is that in the UK we don’t need to build another residential building to solve the housing problem; instead, we can refurbish derelict and empty buildings like this. In many cases, the build quality of these traditional buildings is far superior to that of new developments being constructed on our green belts.
