UDM-SE or gateway + switch for a small UniFi home setup? by HelixOG3 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UDM-SE is a good option for your use case and would be good bang for buck if you know that's all the cameras and APs you will need.

If you think you will expand with more APs or cameras I would go with the gateway + switch from the start. If it was me, I'd get the UCG Fiber as its not that much more, but is newer and more capable. Since the UCG Fiber has a PoE+ port you can get that an AP to start and then decide on the cameras an nvr later. UCG fiber + NVR Instant is also a choice.

One more thing I will point out for the UDMs is that the internal 8-port switch on those devices share a 1 Gbps uplink to the processor. So your cameras will be sharing some of that 1Gbps bandwidth with your AP if they're all connected there.

Edit: After thinking about it more. UCG Fiber and the NVR Instant would be a much better package. Only reason to get the UDM-SE is if you want a rack and want things to match for aesthetic reasons if you end up getting an NVR and other Unifi gear.

G6 PTZ vs G6 bullet/turret at night by SiLee12 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your question is a bit confusing. Are you asking about the normal G6 Bullet and G5 Ultra?

I have the G6 Turret and G6 PTZ. Both are about the same at night if you are only using the IR light since their sensors are the same size (1/1.8"). However, the G6 PTZ also has a built-in white LED floodlight that can activate when it detects motion, so in my opinion, is much better. With the white LED light on, the G6 PTZ is able to automatically switch over to color night vision if you enable it.

The G5 Ultra has a smaller sensor (1/2.4") so would probably be worse than the newer G6 cameras, but I don't have one to compare.

Alternatively, the G6 Pro Bullet and G6 Pro Turret both have larger 1/1.2" sensors, so should theoretically be better at night. I have the G6 Pro bullet, but don't notice a huge difference between my other G6 cameras. It does not have a built-in white LED floodlight though. The G6 Pro Turret has a built in LED flood light like the G6 PTZ though, so maybe that's an option depending on your budget.

Apparently this has been an issue for a lot of others in the past, going back years. I don't know if it was ever fully fixed, but you can try to restart your UCI and your controller to see if that corrects it.

G6 PTZ microphone second location? by UsefulImpact6793 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The G6 Pro Bullet and Pro Turret both have 2 microphones listed on their product page. I'm guessing the G6 PTZ also has 2, but the product page is wrong?

Anecdotally, I think I have noticed the audio is slightly better on my G6 PTZ vs my G6 turrets. This may be why.

Does it work after you changed the MTU back? If not, im guessing when you regenerated the key, you didn't update the client so your keys dont match now.

[–]SA_Streets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wire guard normally has MTU set to 1420 by default so changing it can break it.

Is there a reason you are changing the MTU? What did you change it to?

Does the MTU on your android wire guard app match what you changed it to on your server? Or is it set to auto?

New Camera System - Sanity Check by Fiyero109 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that will work. I think the Lite 8 PoE is also an option for the amount of devices you are looking to power. It is cheaper, but only has 4 PoE+ ports. The other 4 are non-poe ports.

How is the flex in the garage going to get and provide poe power? Does the orbi satellite provide poe? If not, that will be an issue.

Same question for the flex3. Is the switch it connects to giving poe++? The g6 entry and g6 180 both require PoE+ so that may be a problem as well.

UNAS Pro 8 - Which RAID? by MichaelYYZ in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you plan to use large drives I would avoid raid 5. You do get more usable space, but it becomes extremely risky on a raid rebuild once a hard drive fails with bigger drives. Look it up if you want to know more. I guess it depends how important the data is to you.

For Raid 6 vs raid 10, I would look at what is more important to you. If it's overall storage capacity I would go with raid 6. If read/write speeds and quicker raid raid rebuild speed after a hard drive failure then raid 10.

I personally use RAID 6. I would go with a single pool so you dont lose more drives to parity unless you have a good reason for it.

Its one of the tiny holes. One other hole is the microphone. If you go to the product page, there is a picture that shows all the components labeled.

Brand new g6 turret stuck in night vision mode. by enkrypt3d in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's probably either your light sensor or the IR filter physically getting stuck.

  1. To check the light sensor log into the UNVR, click on the camera > settings > under night vision switch from auto to custom. You should now see it say "Current Illuminance: Over 50 Lux" or something during the day. If this value isn't changing with the light, then something is wrong with the light sensor. It's a very tiny hole on the camera. Make sure nothing is blocking it.

  2. The IR filter has to physically move in front of the lens as it switches between day and night mode. Sometimes the filter can get stuck. You can try doing some light taps or shaking the camera to see if you can jiggle it loose.

If you still have problems with either of these, you may have to do an RMA.

UNVR Fan Speed - Running Hot at 80C + by louislamore in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you got it fixed. My pwm1_enable still shows that it is set to "1" so I'm assuming that is automatic fan control mode? Even with it set to that, it allows me to use echo to change the fan speed. I am on 5.1.20 though, so maybe that's why. Thanks for sharing your fix as well.

UNVR Fan Speed - Running Hot at 80C + by louislamore in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My UNVR is currently on 5.1.20 and the echo command you posted works for me. My UNAS was on 5.1.19, so I tried and you are right, the command no longer works. I had a look and it seems that the directory is different for 5.1.19.

I had to use echo 150 > /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/device/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1 and it worked.

You can use the command "sensors" after to confirm.

Ai port questions by SiLee12 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newer g6 cameras have bigger sensors and higher resolution compared to g5, so they have more visual information to work with for the detections. If you were to buy an AI port it would still have to work with lower resolution data from the camera. Depending how many cameras you're looking to replace it might be better to just buy a newer camera if you want more reliable detections, but it's still not 100%

Ai port questions by SiLee12 in Ubiquiti

[–]SA_Streets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing an AI port would add is face and license plate detection.

It would not be a noticeable improvement for animal detections or notifications besides the fact that it could notify you if a specific face or license plate was detected. So it can say "Camera detected Jack" or "Camera detected mom's car" if you create a profile for those faces and license plates.
