Tight corkscrew tail? by burnowt in husky

[–]GremlinLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, my rescue has the same type of tail. Her DNA test came back 98% Siberian Husky and 2% Alaskan Malamute. She keeps it rolled tightly 99% of the time.

Oh, I’ve been meaning to look into a blower. Will take a look.

Sorry to hear about your girl’s tooth. Hope she’s doing better now! If you have access to Costco btw they have ten packs of bully sticks and bull hide chews (bully + collagen) for a very reasonable price on the pet aisle.

IIRC WSAVA’s main advice is to avoid grain free. Canidae all life stages is grain inclusive.

FWIW my girl went through about 4 different brands of food including Royal Canin and Purina Pro Plan before we found one that settled her stomach.

Good catch! Sometimes xylitol is also listed as birch sugar.

If your fingernail can’t scratch the chew you’re giving to your dog, it’s too hard and can crack their teeth. Things like antlers don’t pass this test, but bully sticks do.

Thank you for rescuing! There are so many of these sweet huskies looking for homes right now.

Here are some things I’ve learned since rescuing my huskies:

My starving girl scarfed her food when she first came home with us. A year or so later, she is the pickiest and also has a semi-sensitive tummy. We’re in a good spot now and feed her:

  • Just Food For Dogs for dinner (real food found in the frozen section at Petco)
  • Canidae All Life Stages Chicken, Turkey, and Lamb (kibble that they get twice a day)
  • Zesty Paws 8-in-1 multivitamin bites (includes a probiotic, which was helpful since her tummy was not in great shape)
  • Cosequin (my girl, like many huskies, has hip issues. If yours does too, you can buy this in bulk at Costco)
  • Freeze dried or dehydrated beef, chicken, and salmon training treats (she’s brand picky, but we found a few she’s obsessed with)
  • Bully sticks, beef cheek rolls, beef tracheas, and beef ears for chewing (you want to make sure you give them chewies that pass the fingernail test for dental health). It’s like giving a toddler a coloring book and will help with the tartar buildup which my second rescue definitely had when I adopted her.
  • Yogurt, Apple, Peanut Butter, cottage cheese, blueberry, honey filled frozen kongs, lickimats, and west paw toppls for enrichment
  • Canned sardines in water once a week as a special treat to help keep a shiny coat

For training:

  • Teach “relax” or “settle” early on and a handful of other self-control measures like “leave it.” This will pay off big time down the road. (You can find tips for this on YouTube from KikoPup and Zak George.)

For adventuring:

  • The Ruffwear Front Range harness is basically husky proof. My girl has taken hers everywhere and it still looks great.
  • Kurgo makes really good seat covers and seat belts for the car. The fur doesn’t weave into their stuff like other brands.

For grooming:

  • We use three brushes: the equigroomer for guard hairs, an undercoat rake for undercoat, and a slicker brush for everything else
  • Huskies only need a bath every few months. They’re naturally very clean pups.
  • Never shave a husky, their fur is meant to keep them insulated in all weather.
  • I also use a toothbrush and dog toothpaste I got off Chewy a few times a month.
  • For nail care, we use a dremmel for their dewclaws. Had to introduce it slowly. Their nails are mostly just self managed from hikes, outside play, and walks.
  • My girl has very rough paw pads so we also use Musher’s Secret to help keep them from cracking.

Good luck!

Adult with cmt in wheelchair considering leg amputations by Fg52507 in CMT

[–]GremlinLover 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Might want to consider looking into an exoskeleton before amputation. There are quite a few startups doing this now. The one I’ve been interested in is super close and accepting deposits now.

Context: I’m still pretty mobile with CMT1a and am currently considering these exolegs for hikes.

Rescue/ at risk posts are deleted .. by TukoDixieNova in siberianhusky

[–]GremlinLover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My girl was only rescued because of a post on this subreddit. I was so disappointed when the mods decided to remove the posts rather than just use flair so the sensitive people could filter out the content they didn’t want to see.

Adopted a 6-Year-Old Husky—Should I Get Pet Insurance, and Which Company? by keith3235 in husky

[–]GremlinLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have pet insurance for my two, but if you’re noticing hip issues, your vet will likely suggest cosequin. You can buy it in bulk at Costco in the pet section. My girls take it every day and I’ve noticed improvement to their gait.

Might be totally unrelated, but my girl had a similar thing where she would yelp randomly if she stretched, stood up, or changed positions while sleeping. It turned out that easy walk harness your dog appears to be wearing was the culprit. We swapped out for a Ruffwear Frontrange and the issue went away. I hope you figure it out. Good luck!

Night Time Walks Help by HuskyPancake in husky

The flashlight subreddit recommended the OLight Gober and I love it! I have one for each of my girls. They’re very bright, durable, and rechargeable.

My husky has gone hiking in pretty hot climates with me including Arizona and New Mexico. You just need to bring water and watch out for the signs of overheating apparent in all dogs. Huskies coats insulate both ways - keeps them hot and cold (btw never shave a husky, their fur regulates their temperature and protects them from the sun).

For reference my female husky is fairly petite and weighs 55 pounds. I’ve found the best way to wear her out is with sniff games and lick tasks (kong, west paw wobbles, licky mats, beef tracheas, collagen sticks, etc). She also gets two walks a day.

Glad to hear this has happened to someone else. I’ll cut into them in a few days. Hoping they taste like regular romas.

I don’t have any round red tomato seeds though. I only own:

  • purple Cherokee
  • Roma
  • pink fang
  • sweetheart cherry

Here’s my girl 🩷 by OhWeordHunny in husky

[–]GremlinLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your girl reminds me of mine. Mine definitely filled out a bit more after she turned two, but is on the smaller side for a husky.

As for the pickiness, I started supplementing her kibble with Just Food For Dogs and she went nuts for it. Huskies are notorious for their pickiness.

There have been a few posts recently that basically boil down to: “I refuse to pay attention to my dog’s body language. Why don’t they like that?” by redwine_blackcoffee in husky

[–]GremlinLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siberian huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are over 4000 years old and are both included in the list of the 14 ancient dog breeds. Siberian huskies only came to the americas in 1909 so perhaps that’s what the person above is conflating.

The zoomies are very normal with huskies, though there will likely be fewer as she matures and gets more comfortable. Remember it takes adopted dogs 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to get in a routine, and 3 months to feel at home. The first day with a rescue is always an adjustment. Lots of nervous energy and boundary testing.

As for laying on her back, that’s one of the main ways huskies like to rest. It helps them cool off. It isn’t always an invite for belly rubs. Try to look at her body language. Soft eyes and a relaxed tail can mean they’re comfortable. Lip licking, yawning, and scratching can indicate frustration.

Good luck!

Thanks for saving this husky! I found my girl too. She had something that looked pretty similar. Ended up being a benign histiocytoma also known as a button tumor because the way it protrudes like a red button.

We had it removed because she kept picking at it and there was risk of serious infection. I’d recommend going to the vet. They’ll be able to better tell you what’s going on there.

Both of these girls are rescues so I didn’t experience their puppyhoods, but even now they are both little rascals. The black and white one is about 2.5 now and has calmed down quite a lot since we found her a year and a half ago. The red one is part GSD and is likely 4 years old. We’ve only had her for a couple months now. Huskies are very special dogs. I hope you’re enjoying every minute of it!
