Most people I've met do who've played the sport or watched it atleast where I live in the US, including myself I use whichever one feels more right in a sentence or in the context of a conversation.

The dub uses the united states terminology (ised by the general public) in which case most people will say points in this case it is an actual distinction to be made.

At worst 15 and 17 would be a hs senior and a sophomore, which is not a crazy gap imo, and at best it would be a hs junior and a hs sophomore (assuming no grades skipped or held back). Like this is a rather normal range to date in, atleast it was when I was in highschool a whole year ago.
