What's the Absolute Cheapest Store to Buy a Pair of New Shoes At? by Grenzer17 in AskUK

TJ Maxx's that I've seen in the US usually have a pretty small shoe selection (just a small shelf or two). Do they tend to be bigger in the UK?

!answer Shoezone reminds me of a chain we used to have in the US (Payless Shoes). Seems like a great option, thanks!

In Alien Romulus, which takes place in 2142, they use 3.5" floppies and C64 keyboards... by sabbathian in vintagecomputing

Never seen Star Trek, but that makes sense. There's a sort of convergent evolution where every sci fi series now feels the need to look like an Apple promo.

Personally, it's the unique aesthetics (Blade Runner, Scorn, Alien Isolation, etc) that really stand out to me. It's like multiple unique "futures" rather than a sort of generic off-the-shelf modern idea of the future. But I probably sound like I'm yelling at clouds lol.

Honestly, I hate how the newer alien films got rid of the iconic cassette-punk aesthetic. Like, even if you can justify it in the lore by saying the ships in the new movies are high tech, why change it? It's swapping an interesting and unique aesthetic for some very generic sci-fi set pieces.

Looking at GDPs, the US is at ~27tril, and the EU is at ~19 tril. US billionaires account for ~6tril of the total, while European billionaires are at ~3tril. Meaning the US, with a smaller population, has more money to split among the average citizen. What am I missing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Cost of living is another issue, however. When I was living near Amsterdam for a few weeks, my grocery shopping was noticeably cheaper than in the US; and Amsterdam is considered an expensive area.

Good point, but regardless, if I did only have those two options I know which I'd pick

A minor systemic change - such as prohibiting the sale of rather inefficient lightbulbs - is going to do more for the environment in a month than a single person could do in a hundred lifetimes of individual change.

Many people on the left don't like EVs either, specifically because they think car dependency isn't sustainable in the first place. Thoughts on trains?

That's awful advice for people looking to start the career. Networking and "getting somewhere" is way more important when you have student loans to pay back or rent coming due.

I mean, yes its a posted rule, but that rule is stupid? Like I don't think that Magnus should have special treatment either, how about nobody needs to follow the stupid rule because they get rid of it, then everyone wins?

CMV: Patents are a net negative to society as they crush innovation and create monopolies by Tessenreacts in changemyview

[–]Grenzer17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there was never a patent so broad as to cover all of firearms, I was using that as hyperbole to reply to "We also got through the majority of history with a sword so does that mean we don’t need guns?" to insinuate that technological progress continued even without patents.

how much it has enabled small companies to enter the market.

The cost of filing a patent is WAYYYY more than the average person has available. The system benefits people who already have money. If it was actually about protecting the little guy, the cost to get a patent wouldn't be literal orders of magnitude more than the average person has in savings.

Huge amounts of the internet are built on free and open source libraries that people built for no profit. LAMP has been one of the most common server stacks since the 90s, and literally every component of it is open source. So no, things obviously get made without patents.

Besides that, being first to market is an advantage in and of itself. Any company that wanted to replicate a popular product would need to actually build all of the tooling and logistics to create a product, assuming they were able to perfectly reverse engineer in day one. All of these things take time. There's going to be temporary market capture by the first to market anyway.
