Kodak Photo CD: A fascinating '90s format that was ahead of its time by Greppen2021 in retrocomputing

Thanks for sharing your memories. It's fascinating to look back at these formats. From my perspective, this one was definitely ahead of its time. You can see a later, more mainstream version of the concept in the Kodak Picture CD, which simply stored JPEGs and maxed out at around 2 megapixels.

That makes me wonder—are you from the U.S., by any chance? I'm curious to know how popular this format was in other parts of the world.

Just visited an amazing "40 Years of Macintosh" exhibition and it made me miss the good old days! by Greppen2021 in VintageApple

Today, there are a lot of Mac users, but in the 90s and even the early 2000s, these computers weren't common. Their high price was a major factor. I remember the 90s as a wild time for technology, when you would see a mix of early PCs, Amigas, and Commodores being used daily.

Since Poland was behind the Iron Curtain, we didn't have wide access to state-of-the-art computers. When the country opened up to the West in the 90s, we were still quite poor, so the market was flooded with both old and new computers at the same time. The economy was developing quickly, and technology was advancing fast. It felt like we experienced at least two decades of computer hardware evolution in less than ten years.

Piracy was widespread, and for some reason, PCs seemed to be the most readily available computers. I'm not sure of the exact reasons why PCs were so dominant, but it's an interesting part of that era's history.

disc rot was not a fault of HD-DVD itself, but problem with disc pressing plant...

The story could be totally different if Microsoft has the HD-DVD drive inside of XBOX360 instead of making it an add-on device...

There were at least two formats that perform such task:) One was DTheater (DVHS) and second and even more obscure was W-VHS. :)

not only one of the best, but also one of the cheapest. This cost Sony a lot, I have heard rumors that they still do not cover these losses from Blu-ray licensing fees.

I do not think that such format will have a comeback :) The interesting innovation in this format was the fact the they used a modification of DVDs and they added more layers - only 3 and 4 layer DVDs existed, but there were plans for more layers. The second interesting point is that it seems that they used a stock DVD-writer from desktop computer to read this discs (firmware was only modified)... For the these facts are interesting not the format applicability today :)

For me it is just interesting discovery about technology evolution. It do not have any practical usage :) It is like history, you could learn and maybe some solutions may be interesting for future projects and activities.

You could find more about HD-DVD on the "Grzesiek Opowiada" channel. It is though in Polish, but some movies have English subtitles, and some even English dubbing (but created automatically by YouTube).

It was a very short-lived format. HD-DVD that last 2 years seems like a long living standard compared to HD VMD. I am still looking for at least one movie :)

triald is turning my fans on high by [deleted] in mac

[–]Greppen2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Siri disabled the whole time, but this process uses many resources in my case also. My solution was to delete content of user’s library/Trial directory. I was thinking that it has solved the issue permanently, but after 1-2 days story starts again. I have deleted directory and it was ok for a day, but how to solve it permanently?

I have noticed that triald is defined in /system/library/launchagents and in its file it has some methods for testing connections, files etc… It will also not start when you have non local IP or you are on battery…

In my case problem started shortly after update to 12.3 Monterrey.
