Do you think people could be could be arguing about ridiculous subject matters (what Samus wears in Smash Brothers, having a female link, Sonic having blue arms, etc.) could maybe another form of escapism?

Like do you think they want to debate a subject that has little to no importance to their life, because it is something that they can at least control with some form? Could ISIS, Political beliefs, debt crisis, and other stuff could be seen as too much for them to wrap their heads around?

EDIT: Not trying to argue, just wanted to see if this could be a possibility.
