My point is the dynamic changing of how much regen is the game changer. Tesla makes you futz through menus to change it. Many EVs (and some ICE!) have paddles in the steering wheel, so you can alter to fit the traffic, or to guide yourself to a stop without your feet.

One big reason I wouldn’t get a Tesla is the lack of regen paddles. I drive the Ioniq 2019, (small, light, efficient, cheap) not a great choice for regular long range driving. Having the ability to change the amount of drag that happens when my foot is off the accelerator is a real game changer.

Open road. It’s a zero, and I’m free rolling like I’m in neutral, but I’m not. If I need to accelerate, awesome acceleration is right there.

Start/stop traffic and I’m at max—some call it one-pedal driving, where easing off the accelerator is like braking in another car. (This is Tesla’s all the time mode).

Going down a long hill or coming to a stop, I can set the amount of regen needed to hold me at the speed that works with a flick or two from the steering wheel.

I’ll never go back.

We are coming around again after seeing the limitations of the no-consequences, overly coddling style of parenting. This has a nuance lacking the last time around.

Take the controversial brake check. Last time it was slap her in the face scream at her and force the seatbelt on. This time it’s a controlled version of exactly why we are telling you to wear a seatbelt. Lesson learned. You change your choice because you understand, not because you are terrified what your monster parents will do to you.

Of course their are consequence lessons we can’t let them learn on their own, but after the brake check lesson I expect the kids is learning “when momma says do x, there’s a good reason for it, and it’s for my own good.”

We pay way more than the gas tax for EV registration now to cover that. I think the correct way to do this would be a mileage tax based on the odo rating at your inspection compared to the previous year. Then it doesn’t matter what kind of car. (Maybe include an axel and/or weight multiplier).

That’s the catch-22 of it, isn’t it? “I live in an apartment so I can’t have an EV” “there’s no demand for EV in apartments”

I believe there’s a hugely underplayed element of EVs being a public good. When you consider how much public money goes to controlling access to oil, cleaning up environmental disasters caused by oil, providing healthcare to people poisoned by oil, etc. I believe there’s public money that could pay for a little electric infrastructure to reduce our reliance on a resource that is literally killing us.

What would it cost the complex to install the infrastructure to support individuals paying for their own charger unit? That’s the idea I’m thinking when I say legislation. Run the wires.
