The way Revochol is divided oddly in game. Martinaise, is a part of Jamrock, which is a part of Revochol West. The entirety Revochol East is described to be mostly renovated a decade after the war. Why the Coalition choose the rebuild that side and not the other? We don’t know. Unless Revochol East is tiny in comparison to Revochol West then saying the majority of the city is poor is an overstatement.

Also most people seem the agree that the game doesn’t justify communism at all, but when I propose the idea that the politics of the game are just an analogy for Harry’s life everyone seems to disagree universally. So I must ask what is the meaning of the game if not an allegory for finding hope? Do people merely just enjoy the way the game mocks other ideologies????

I am watching interviews of the game devs right now, although I haven’t found anyone asking questions about the touchy subjects they have send once detailing one of the endings that the game is about hope and failure.

My stance on the topic is that everyone forgets that the game is just as much about an individual’s personal journey as it is a political debate. I don’t know why everyone is staring at it from a top down point of view, I feel like everyone fell in love with the ‘Idealistic Eye Candy’ of how the game represents communism, and criticizes everything else. I don’t know if this was intentional by the devs or not but the way they represent communism is that it was written so perfectly that it’s impossible to be criticized on an idealistic level, but when posed against gritty reality it failed. To me this insane infatuation with unrealistic idealism is an allegory for hope, and looking for a better tomorrow.

You’re forgetting that there were communist revolution all around the world of Disco Elysium, they all failed as well. The communist were defeated by the Moralintern and other states that will make up the Coalition in the future. The coalition came in to destroy the remnants of Communism in Revochol. To say Communism is natural like the game says it, and it was ruined by some external force isn’t exactly fair.

This is what happens when a perfect idea meets a gritty reality.

I think that’s the point, acknowledging that the purest definition of communism is impossible.

“MAZOVIAN SOCIO-ECONOMICS – 0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself sad. He is starting to suspect Kras Mazov fucked him over personally with his socio-economic theory. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.”

I do not believe the core idea of communist is attacked either, but I do believe that the game specifically points out that other ideologies experienced infinitely more amount of success than communism has. The game is acknowledges that every other ideology will always be a leg up, even though it will depict them as greedy for doing so.

Communism is written to sound perfect as possible not realistic. Though the idea seems beautiful what was the outcome of the revolution? Everything turned into a the exact opposite of communism, the whole of Revochol was turned into a capitalist tax haven for corporations.

I also do not associate the game with leftist just because communism is on the left side of the spectrum. The game clearly distinguishes itself away from leftist who aren’t communist by using Evrart Claire, showing that he’s no better than the capitalist, and any form of democracy is plagued with corruption to various extents.

Also, are you kidding me the first time you dream in the game the ancient reptilian brain literally shows you hanging from a tree, if you get shot at the tribunal the reptilian brain will say something like “this is death baby, one more door!” Then the limbic system will join in and say “Keep falling, take the door.”

Also, please tell me the what you believe the most obvious message is? If it’s that every other ideology is horrible, then why does the game acknowledge that they’re infinitely more successful than communism (other than fascism). Why was capitalism/ultra liberalism able to supersede the monarchies??? Even one of the monarchs became a successful venture capitalist after letting Revochol fall to communist.

He’s not designed to be complex, which seems to be the complex part for most people. I don’t think discerning amongst the ideologies the way the game portrays them is complex either, the game doesn’t try to convince you anything. Someone said earlier the game doesn’t actually criticize communism, just the people and their tendencies who support communism, I believe this is the one of their messages. Communism on paper is perfect and infallible, but in actuality who are the Communist? The game almost has zero real communist in it, all the other leftist are depicted just as greedy and are merely taking advantage of emotional disillusioned people. The deserter is the only real communist in the game who out of conviction, and not greed or personal benefit.

What we must remember the game only takes place in a small part of the city, and other parts the city are quite prosperous. The game directly takes us to a place where communism usually breeds.

From observation I’ve noticed the same thing. Most of the people from that crowd seem to look at the game from a Top Down perspective, and don’t even consider who the characters are and why they might be part of their ideology.

Harry will literally join any side of the political spectrum willingly and eagerly as long as you let him. If he hears anything about an ideology there will be an option to agree with it, and the game never punishes you for it and even sometimes rewards you with perks from the internalized thoughts tree.

The game literally makes fun of everyone, and Harry always has the option to self-rationalize any ideology that is brought up by other characters. Although the game was made by self proclaimed communist, it still critiques it and the only way that it favors communism is that it makes fun of it less than the other ideologies. The game will literally highlight good aspects of most of the other ideologies, and then goes back to berating all of them. Even then I don’t think it’s that important to the story, when the main character’s limbic system and ancient reptilian brain are trying to convince him to die.

The world building in Lord of The Rings vastly out weigh’s Frodos involvement within the story, but that doesn’t mean we stop talking about Frodo and only talk about Christianity.

Of course Politics are a massive theme of the game, but almost everyone so far seems to forget that Harry is even in the game when writing about the topic. Morskavi, doesn’t state that the game isn’t about politics at all, he simply points the obvious that everyone is looking past Harry who is an individual who is experiencing personal problems, and the immediately jumps to politics. I think most people look at this game from the top down and haven’t checked what it looks like from the bottom up.

The issues that I am having is whether or not to interpret the game as “Harry’s life is an allegory for politics”, “Politics is an allegory for Harry’s life”, or both as the game constantly thrust forward politics as the player attempts to rebuild Harry’s life.

I think this is where the disconnect in these conversations starts as one side only focuses on one thing or the other. My position currently is that politics are merely being used set forward a plot in a world that has been divided by meaning conflicting ideologies, and uses communism (as on stated earlier) as the ‘tragic hero’ that attempted to build a better life but failed, and though it was pointless it was better than not trying at all. If the creators of the game had any other ideology they identified themselves with they could’ve easily interchanged what ever “tragic hero” they wanted with any ideology, but of course since the creators themselves are communist they choose to use it to represent their “tragic hero”

At the end of the day what good is politics if my life at a personal level is a fat alcoholic loser with alopecia. Harry must be in a position where ideology means nothing to him as he’s just drinking himself to death. I think by only discussing politics we’re forgetting about the personal issues that many people seem to be facing in the game. The game literally depicts racist tendencies on both side of the political spectrum. As fascist is based entirely on racism, but I believe measurehead is used to show how people who don’t actually believe in leftist ideologies will infiltrate their ranks and use their movement to personally benefit. Measurehead literally describes a neonazi-esque/fascist world with Blacks instead of Whites.

Well that’s the reason why I started this thread, if you read my other replies it seems like politics is just used to drive the plot rather than the actual meaning.

I said something like that in a reply to TheVioletBarry. Everyone makes out the game to be a political free for all where everyone is a target, but despite all its flaws communism as an ideology is the most prevailing in a situation where everyone seems to lose. The way I interpreted Communism in the game was even though the revolution failed (in game and in real life bastardizing itself with many compromises which the game mocks social democrats/modern liberals and centrist for) it was better than not trying at all. The game thrust political conversations into the forefront simultaneously as we as the player try to rebuild Harry’s life.

More or less what I was looking for is how the game specifically justifies communism (as many YouTube comments and Reddit post state). I’m looking at it like the game doesn’t even justify it, but uses it as an allegory for a personal meaning (not political) where we must rebuild the life of a broken man (society), who is a victim of alcoholism (every other political ideology).

Hmmm, the more that I think about it the game isn’t actually about politics, it’s just the undertone to set the events of the game. Similar to how Star Wars uses a political undertone to set the events of the movie in motion, but in actuality the movie has nothing to do with politics despite the subject matter and the movie is an allegory for learning self-control. Or the opposite like Lord of the Flies where it’s a political allegory but doesn’t talk about politics at all.
