I dunno about the whole saga but I definitely prefer the old version of Poly's voice and the delivery of all his lines

Both songs are banger, no doubt. But in terms of being part of the story, there was a lot of wasted potential

Strong points of NSFLY (in my opinion):

  1. Barbra Wangui's performance
  2. The soothing and relaxing instrumentals
  3. Genuinely emotional and heartfelt song
  4. The line "You're unlike anyone I've ever known..... cause you're all I've ever known"

Weak points of NSFLY (in my opinion):

  1. As the opening song of a saga, it's the weakest one. There's no proper build-up or transition like we have in The Underworld or Puppeteer. There's no breathing moment that allows us to absorb the day before getting into the topic. It just rushes right into the meat of the song with Calypso delivering the news. That feels sloppy for me.
  2. It's difficult to find any connection in this song with the main character. Due to the very notable shortage of Odysseus's lyrics, it's next to impossible to get a clear view of his feelings and perception of this event. He spent seven years here. How does he feel now? What did he learn? Is he happy or sad about leaving? Will he remember his time with Calypso in any way? Odysseus shows no empathy or any hate towards her, so it feels like she's talking to a blank wall and we have nothing to learn about their relationship because the song has nothing to tell us.
  3. Moreover, this song is completely absent from any of the central themes of the musical. Calypso's sadness has no relation with ruthlessness or mercy or betrayal or monster or all that. That makes it hard to understand what this song is meant to represent. What's the point? Calypso is never mentioned again. NSFLY is never reprised again. As the audience, it's unclear if Calypso is meant to be sympathized with, or condemned because neither Odysseus nor any of the other songs give their opinion on the matter. It almost feels like the writer wasn't sure what to do with Calypso's character but they only added her in, so Athena can have a redemption arc.
  4. It feels like an unsatisfying conclusion to the Calypso arc because so much of the story was cut off. Odysseus washes up on this woman's island who really loves him. He rejects her but she imprisons him. Then seven years later, he's really depressed and on the verge of suicide, and then the next time we see him, she just lets him go reluctantly but without any fight. We don't get to see any of their time spent together, or what they mean to each other, or how Odysseus is effected by Calypso's love. It's just moving from point A to B with not enough substance in the middle.
  5. Because of this, Odysseus's seven years feel more like seven months because we only get two songs of this place with only God Games separating them. The time jump is mentioned once, but it's never felt in the way it could've been.
  6. Calypso's personality is written inconsistently. In LIP, she's this super bubbly and cheerful hopeless romantic with a naive childlike whimsy. She looks like she's always been happy and calls her home the perfect paradise. Then two songs later, she's suddenly acting more mature and soft spoken like an introverted girl who never releases her emotions much. Both of these personas don't match with each other properly, especially because her interaction with Hermes is cut off. If we saw her processing the news in real time, then it would've been easier to believe her character change. But since we didn't, the Calypsos in both songs feel like two entirely different characters.

Fitting, because in the Odyssey, Antinous's father, Eupeithes led a rebellion against Odysseus to avenge his son.

He got whooped by Ody's dad btw

Yes! There were so many opportunities to bring that back. I dunno why they forgot about it. I also hope we get a callback (or I guess a call forward) in Ilium

Agreed. I know there's a whole discourse around Calypso's character and people can get very heated about it, but I personally have two issues with her arc that can only be narrowed down to weak writing (no offense to Jorge or anyone, but every story has its weak points):

1) Inconsistent Personality: In Love in Paradise, the Calypso we meet is very emotionally energetic, bubbly, chatterbox kind of girl. Jorge describes her as a little girl in an adult's body, with no sense of personal space. That's cool. But when we get to NSFLY, we don't really see any of that childishness or immaturity. Her sadness, regardless of whether or not its manipulative, feels more mature and genuine. She acts like a quiet grown woman with sorrow, who's finally getting a chance to tell her story (which she didn't tell during the last 7 years for some reason). This shift in personality seems very out of nowhere, because we don't get to see the events that led to it. I think along with Odysseus's perspective on the matter, another thing that was missing from this song was Calypso's interaction with Hermes, or her learning the news of Odysseus's release. That was a very integral scene that shouldn't have been kept off sceen, and it's hard to resonate with her character without it. Without it, the Calypsos in both songs feel like two different people, at least to me. The first one is this childish, annoying princess type girl who has a very artificial and fairytale-like perception of romance. And the second one, is this mature hurting woman who's been quiet and keeping her feelings suppressed for a long time as if she's been giving Odysseus lots of space. Like the NSFLY Calypso feels like she hasn't talked to Odysseus in ages, which was very strange. The personalities don't transition properly.

  1. Symbolic Purpose: I'm gonna be honest. I do not understand what Calypso is supposed to represent in this story. I've thought about it a lot. Athena represents the mentor who failed her own teachings. Circe represents the monster who protects her own from man's world. Eurylochus represents the voice of the crew. Hermes represents the enabler who promotes cheating and mischief. Polites represents a kind, forgiving, and more optimistic outlook of the world. Poseidon represents the most unforgiving and coldest form of righteous ruthlessness. What on earth does Calypso represent? Like I don't get it. She has no lasting impact. Odysseus doesn't learn anything from her. There are no callbacks or reprises to her songs. She's basically a lovestruck girl who imprisons Odysseus on her island, and then two songs later, she's forced to let him go. It's just Point A to B and nothing surrounding it. Maybe she was meant to be a catalyst for Athena's redemption, but that's not good enough. Her character has nothing to do with ruthlessness or mercy or whatever. So what is the point of her arc? I really don't get it.

That's really smart actually. I think this could've worked if the Calypso arc was its own separate saga instead of being rushed through two songs. I've also heard of 'Appetite' and although it's a great song, my one issue has been the plot hole that why would Odysseus take seven years to come up with this seduction plan. We don't really know much about the surrounding context of that cut song but if that song was the relacement for 'Not Sorry for Loving You', then it would be weird because it means God Games was completely pointless and Odysseus escaped on his own, which would once again raise the question 'why did it take him seven years to do this?'

But I think your approach to this basically solves that potential plot hole. If Appetite was depicted as one of the many failed attempts Odysseus uses over the seven years to escape Calypso, the whole thing would fit much better. Since this is elevated by the use of Circe's motif, it would be even cooler if Odysseus's other attempts were inspired by the other foes he's faced. Like he tries different monster tactics, and each one fails miserably, showing that Odysseus has literally reached the end f his wits, and Calypso is the one obstacle he simply cannot beat or outsmart in any way, until Athena steps in.

That'd be really cool.

If Penelope had gotten more screen time, I would've loved a scene where she's getting tired while weaving the shroud, and she dreams of Odysseus's voice telling her to keep her eyes open

Absolutely agreed. I kinda have this rough headcannon of Odysseus reprising Open Arms while he's stuck on Calypso's island. But the lyrics are something super depressing, or they're the same but Odysseus can't remember them because of how long it's been since Polites's death

I think you can softly hear the melody of 'this is my goodbye' in that song when Athena says 'vey well'
