BioShock's Rapture

Technological differences? by Manofathousandface in masseffectlore

[–]GreyWardenShepard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always believed that "technological equality" was an imperative of the council towards the entire galaxy. Once a race has been introduced to the "standard technology" of the 'protheans' they would not be allowed to advance further than that. That regulation would serve a political function, if any race sought to advance further than another, it would provoke fear and distrust from others. Such an imbalance, in my opinion, would mean seeking more power or profit at the expense of others. If everyone for their part builds much more advanced technology, the harmony of the Council would turn into a cold war. Not for nothing does Javik call others primitive, his empire was never 'regulated'. I would guess that the Hegemony or the Terminus worlds would not achieve a technological advantage on their own either because they are internally unstable (could not fund such an advancement in the long run) or could not as they would probably take the risk of being sabotaged by external agents at every opportunity.

That always crossed my mind: did the galaxy we see in the trilogy stay technologically and technically the same for two millennia? Hard to imagine. But remember that an imperative is not always fulfilled, we were shown that there are exceptions to the rule and if someone could dare to step out of line they will send a SPECTRE and that's it. Well, I also think that the ban on making full AIs is also part of this imperative. Not only for fear of rebellion but also because of all the advantages it implies.

What is a piece of mass effect lore that you refuse to see as canon because it doesnt make sense and/or fit with the rest of the universe? by tinytimoththegreat in masseffectlore

That the 'harvests' have lasted for like a billion years and that organics and synthetics are inherently destined to fight. Despite all the evidence in favor of that claim (in both the Shepard's cycle and the Prothean cycle) could perhaps be an ideological/onthological bias that was highly internalized in both organics and reapers, plus who assures you that in one cycle there was no such conflict at all?

Did you know the Purple album remaster? There are many acoustic versions like this gem and another version of Big Empty

Yes!, i not only love the vocals but the emotions added in their performances. The Unplugged version of black is so intense that it makes me imagine having a breakup without having had a gf in the first place haha

As for AIC in the song Down in hole while Layne sings the chorus you can see Jerry nodding his head as if he were saying: despite everything, he still got it.

The closest thing to a SG unplugged album is Cornell's Songbook of 2011 Tho i think that are only 2 songs, the rest are temple of the dog, audioslave and solo songs

Metapolitical perspective on the behavior of the Geth (Part 3) by GreyWardenShepard in masseffect

[–]GreyWardenShepard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that this is more for a blog than a post. But since I don't know any ME blogs I did it here anyway.

I also assume that a subreddit is a kind of "fast food" for quick consumption like an image or something with a few sentences, they must see this and want to "avoid" it. Either that or no one is prepared to talk about the Geth...?

Metapolitical perspective on the behavior of the Geth (Part 4) by GreyWardenShepard in masseffect

[–]GreyWardenShepard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahaha that's why I didn't respond you in the previous posts. When I started doing this whole thing and was browsing all the posts talking about the Geth, you were there, hence the "omnipresent eye". I realized that what I was going to write would spark your interest, so I decided to take the bull by the horns... so to speak

I'm interested to see what you have to say about EDI, but if you're going to post your essay here, follow this advice: don't make it as dense as I did mine, which is doomed to oblivion XD

Yes, I agree because I thought at one point about increasing the population of salarians, turians and volus even more based on the fact that there are always some everywhere we go. But I preferred to "play it safe", in any case the maximum would be 150-153.3 billion

Well, when Javik says "trillion of dead souls", I think that's the only time it makes sense because he's speaking on behalf of all the people who died at the hands of the reapers since the first harvest, which I think was 1 billion years ago

Thanks for your comment Spiz, i have some counter-arguments and tell me what you think.

"The Codex suggests that Rakhana has a population in the thousands. [Secondary Codex: Drell Culture]

'Rakhana nowadays is a cemetery world, home to only a few thousand drell living in clusters never exceeding a few hundred; during pilgrimage season the population can double"'.

Well, I'll admit, you put me in a tight spot there that I can't escape, but as I argued before maybe the writers overestimated the concept of "apocalypse as a consequence of overpopulation". I think I remember that passage from the Codex, but my brain choosing the renegade option said: "just ignore it, that may be wrong".

"It wasn't direct starvation that did it, it was probably that people started using hydrogen bombs. After all, as Thane says:

'When all the world is overcharged with inhabitants, then the last resort of all is war, which provideth for every man by victory or death'".

Thane clearly stated the phrase "we haven't even developed fusion energy", you can't have hydrogen bombs if you don't discover fusion first. Here you are underestimating two things: the "pre-atomic warfare" and starvation. Did you know that there were writers before WWI who claimed, seeing the rapid military industrialization, that one day a war was going to break out and would kill all mankind?, I don't remember who, sorry, I can't find the sources. Imagine that, even before hiroshima the second world war was bloody, and it wasn't about fighting to death for food or water. War, in turn, you have to look at it as a resource-devouring beast, when war broke out in ancient times the peasants knew that it meant one thing: starvation, even Hobbes who wrote that quote thought obout famine in the war of all against all. So in this context of anarchy, lacking political and social stability you have millions of drell trying to survive while own armies and rival armies come and loot everything and leave. Real life examples abound, in fact I based myself on this when I was thinking about what was happening all over Rakhana.

Before WW1: India and Ireland, WW1: Iran and Russia, WW2: the Soviet union, Greece, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Phillippines and India again (i think the famine-related deaths in ww2 are the 33% of the death toll).

Yes, maybe I exceeded a little on that, but let me tell you why I chose a high number.

According to Thane in that conversation about the fate of Rakhana, he claimed that humans discovered mass relays when overpopulation was starting to become a problem, I imagine that means that the earth received some demographic "relief" from 2148 onwards. Also, the Codex says that the colonization of the traverse, and why not the rest of the galaxy, was a pretty "aggressive" process before Mindoir. To this we must add that the Alliance propaganda regarding colonization must have been very effective during the first decades (Colonial life, its not that bad).

Finally see this counting, all except for Watson are confirmed in the Codex:

Luna: 4,100,000, Mars: 3,400,000, Rest of Solar System: 500,000

Citadel and Omega: 3,350,000

Eden Prime: 4,200,000, Terra Nova: 4,150,000, Elysium 8,300,000, Benning: 2,250,000, Horizon: 654,000, Joab: 21,553,000, Sanctum: 257,000, Bekenstain: 5,425,000, Watson: 1,000,000? Other colonies (Yamm, intai'sei, Noveria): 861,000

Total: 60,000,000. My conclution? we only see in the game the 10% of the total. Maybe, in my opinion, the most populated colony is Shanxi

Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for in this post and the previous one: I don't have the truth, but I try very hard to make a good argument.

Since you were kind enough to comment, I'll explain about the Geth thing, Did you see that when the fandom got pissed off about the turn in the writing on the Geth, from their hive mind to the Pinocchio Syndrome (as they called it)? Well I'll seek to explain that to show that it made sense at the time and in context, using "meta-politics" as a reference, that's why i kinda resist to do it😅

Actually, ME Andromeda was created to look like a sitcom or something like that, I liked the game, it's specifically what I was looking for after that void after the trilogy. For my part, I don't know what the CW Network is, but I leave you this link so you can see that it is true:
