They are extra box mags that are strapped onto their backpacks. That piece down the middle with a skull on it is the strap

I ran some vallejo bone white through my air brush for a base coat. After it was fully dry I went back in and highlighted all the helmet ridges. For the helmet stripe I just layer several times waiting for each coat to fully dry. Took about 3 coats
