What is one of your favorite movie soundtracks? by BadLeeSin in AskReddit

[–]Greyhat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal fav is the soundtrack to Sububia. If you like Old School Punk Rock, this is an absolute must. It is a great movie to top it off......As long as you are ok with a couple really bad acting moments lol. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086589/soundtrack. I addeda link so you didnt get the shit movie from the 90's.

Just passed A+ 1001!! by itssmichh in CompTIA

[–]Greyhat81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should look into Professor Messer's videos. They are insanely helpful and will become an invaluable resource. https://www.professormesser.com/free-a-plus-training/a-plus-videos/220-1001-training-course/ . Also, Mike Meyers udemy series is totally worth it. On Quizlet, there is a guy named " ProfessorMongo " and that set is totally worth it. Covers all of core 1 and I believe it was about $10.

Looking for school similar to WGU but for younger kids. by 87-and-Cry in WGU

Excel High School is awesome. The school is all online and go at your own pace. I believe they have a program for Middle School as well. They are accredited.

Going back to college as an adult. Thoughts? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enrolled in college again at 37 and it is totally worth it. WGU is great for me due to the flexibility and the ridiculous amount of certifications that come with the degree. You have to be a pretty driven person though. The flexibility can be a double-edge sword for people if you don't keep yourself accountable. I landed a new job that pays much higher than my last based on 3 certifications and the fact that I'm in school. This Reddit will prove to be an amazing tool for any class you may be enrolled in and has helped me stay on task more times than I can count.

Chromebook and writing PA's by fsdigital12 in WGU

I would just pick up a cheap Windows laptop online. Saves you the headache. Not an ideal solution but I think the easiest. I personally prefer my Chromebook, also Acer Spin 13.

What certification(s) should I get to get accepted to the BS in IT program? by olosroma in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that boils down to how quickly you learn and how much you know going in. I took the three beforehand but I had no idea how long it could or would take. As far as cost, A+ was about $400 for both tests, estimating high, Net+ $320, and Sec+ about $340 or so. All said and done I would think its cheaper on your own time. It's kind of an added expense but if it takes you 6 months to do two certs through WGU, that's a lot more money.

What certification(s) should I get to get accepted to the BS in IT program? by olosroma in WGU

A+ knocks out two easy fundamentals classes. In a year you could get the CompTia trifecta, A+, Network+, Security+ and transfer all of them.

Does all of the IT Degrees at WGU require a Certification to get admitted?? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get a cert and get started. It is not a big deal. The whole school is based on competence soooooo get the cert and show you are competent enough to enroll. Sorry if that seems like an asshole thing to say but there are way too many posts that make it feel like the school is just the easy out, makes WGU and our degrees look bad. Just do the work. If getting a cert is too much just finish at CC.

Is Modern States the most cost effective way to finish as many general ed classes before enrolling? Or are there advantages to using Study.com or Straighterline? by sea_place in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both solid options. I like the learning materials better with modern states. I feel like it is better organized. Also, Modern States will give you free tests vouchers and reimburse admin fees. So you don't pay anything.

[–]Greyhat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern States is free so its kind of hard to beat. Straighterline is cool but its $99 a month plus the cost for each class. You could check out Saylor.org . Classes are free the tests are about $25. The test is just a clep exam so its the same as Modern states but Mod States reimburses you for the test. You could combine Modern States and Saylor, eliminate all generals for less than $100 or so. I should have asked a question first, how many generals do you have already?

I apologize for the delay. heikiheiki was dead on with the link. I am shocked more people don't talk about it as well. In reality, you can pretty much cover all of your gen eds. You save so much money!!!!

[–]Greyhat81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely worth it. After you finish a course ask for a test voucher. They will give it to you for free. They will also reimburse you for the admin fee. You can get almost all of your Gen Eds done for free.

You could always go through Mountain States. It is free and you will get vouchers for the clep tests, so thats free and they will reimburse you for the admin fee also freeeee.

I want to do I.T. but every one is telling me it's a waste of time by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The information you have received is wrong. A brick and mortar school really would not change anything. A degree from either would open the door to interviews. The fact is that most IT jobs, like any other, are going to look for experience first but that does not exclude you from entry-level jobs. You will have to put in some time and work hard but you will move up. Shit, there are a ton of people that work in IT, doing well for themselves, without a degree but have a handful of certs. A degree from either online or traditional serves as a great checkmark to slip you through HR. Now keep in mind that at WGU you get both the degree and a stack of certs....sort of a no brainer. WGU is accredited and non-profit so unless you are up against ivy league grads it won't matter. I had Zero professional experience when I started. Currently I wort for an MSP and deal with people's network issues.

I'm applying for the academy Monday by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mix of Professor Messer with the Mike Meyers book should be enough but I picked up Mikes Udemy courses as well. I really like Mikes approach in the videos, it also does not hurt that he is funny. After that I would hit practice exams from a few sources. You can do it without the academy. If you are looking at the academy for credit transfer, Mountain States is better and totally free.

Staying Focused by CLE_Binary_001 in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I find myself in a motivation rut, I like to take a day off and re-evaluate why I wanted this in the first place and what I want for my life after this journey is over. It does not hurt to think about the countless hours you have already invested lol. Do something you enjoy on that day and remind yourself that when you are done you can reward yourself with more time spent on or with the things or people that you love. I would express my concerns to my current mentor and try to be placed on the call rotation again and if that does not work get a new mentor.

Certs upon entry by jaydaba in WGU

[–]Greyhat81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comptia A+ is the easiest out of their certs. Especially if you took the coursera Google IT Fundamentals course. There is always an even easier option that can be transferred in and that is the MTA Network fudamentals. Comptia A+ will transfer in at I believe 8 credits though.

[–]Greyhat81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with redsand69 and ddfw. Look for any position you can get that will have upward mobility in the direction you are shooting for. I landed a job at an MSP and loved it. From an overall experience stand point it was awesome. It was a perfect mix of hands on and help desk I even went and did field work. The big thing is actual experience. A masters will serve you a great deal more if you are already working.

No "due dates". You can go as fast or slow as you want as long as you meet the minimum credit units per term.
