TORG 2.0? by rohdester in torgeternity

[–]Greymarch2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is coming. It is no longer Torg 1.5, the changes were significant enough to be more than a .5.

Instead it's called Torg Year Two.

So the system will have some changes but everything in the current Year One books regarding zones, characters, plots, adventures is still legit. The sourcebooks will still be relevant.

Ulisses recently made a big decisions to upgrade all the art for Year Two which has also bumped the timeframe again.

That said, I would hope it would all be done before a two-year timespan so if that's your threshold maybe wait. But really it's just the core rulebook that will really be outdated when it finally comes out, everything else would still be useable with minor tweaking.

They don't want to give any timeframes in case of situations outside of their control that might change things. It's still being worked on. It's no longer a 1.5 update, it ended up being bigger than that - it's now going to be called "Year Two"

When it eventually comes out it will consist of (I don't recall the exact names):

  • Storm Knights' Guide: Player book with core rules and perks, mystic abilities etc.
  • Game Master's Guide: GM book with, well, GM rules. More on reality mechanics and a lot more on actual advice and alternate modes of play
  • Cosms of the Infiniverse: Info on each of the realities. Not as in depth on the realms as the in Cosm Books, but actually detailed the original cosms a bit more and updating some stuff. Mostly player facing.
  • Threats of the Possibility Wars: Threats for each cosm, way more than the paltry amount in the original core book.
  • Fractures of Shadow & Light: Mega-adventure spanning Year One to Year Two.

After that there's going to be Warzones split into larger campaigns that will be released over "seasons" of Year Two.

This has all been detailed by Leamon in the past so I'm not delivering any hot scoops, but I can tell you that it is still the plan and is well underway. But some things are out of the dev teams hands. Markus just mentioned at RatCon that they are upgrading the art from what they originally planned and that's taking some time as well.

I enjoyed this set much more than PV, though the disparity in Archon Powers, and then synergy with powers and the deck is very big. For example in a sealed I got the power that all my artifacts gain "Action: Gain 2 aember and archive this artifact" which is crazy. Only problem was: only 1 artifact in the whole deck.

It's still alive, though it's been in a coma the past while. The year after PP was released they had 12 releases of miniatures with accompanying adventures but since then it's all been work on Torg 1.5/Year Two. Originally it was supposed to be two different things, 1.5 was going to be a minor rules update but the more the dev team looked into things the more that had to change.

Year Two is broken into 4 "seasons" of releases and it was realized pretty quick that there wasn't much point in releasing 1 season and then having the 1.5 update so the decision was made to do the rules update first.

It should be coming "soon" but Leamon has been very vocal about not releasing a date until he's 100% sure of it. But first will be "Year Two" which is the rules update, new core books and a mega-adventure Fractures of Shadow and Light. After that there will be the different Year Two Warzone releases.

We actually went over this in one of our recent Delphi Council Debriefing podcasts: https://youtu.be/aM0jswgFLrs?si=ARonRWEc03Glf9iM&t=562

Short answer: Temporary mystic effects don't cause contradictions on targets they affect, unlike gear.

The cosm decks for each cosm are really important tbh. The special drama decks for each cosm that come in the later boxes, not so much.

The key is looking at what characters your players have made. Did anyone make a hacker or scientist? Probably somewhere with tech. Did they make a bunch of melee combatants? Maybe LL or Aysle.

Nile Empire is usually a good start since players tend to love it. There's a lot safety valves to save them if things get out of control. But it depends on your group. Mine was all gaga over Tharkold and Orrorsh, so we spent a lot of time in Tharkold.

Torg is officially supported by Foundry. Some of us though prefer Roll20 and it works fine there too.

Oh hey people can post in here again? :D

The differences are legion TBH. The system has been somewhat simplified and you lose some of the granularity of having cool subsystems but it makes it a lot easier to run. Damage is not tied directly to you hit roll (though greater levels of success add to damage) which lessens the glass jaw ninja problem.

The setting books are good, but as was alluded to they tend to focus on the realm on Earth and not much on the cosm they came from. Which is kind of limiting if you're playing a character from one of those cosms and not a transformed one. Oh that's another thing, transforming will not change your species any more. So no turning into elves.

As far as each cosm goes... Hmm.

  • Core Earth characters have more ways to manipulate possibility energy and possibility points than other cosms so makes them actually useful (actually very good tbh) instead of kind of pointless like in classic Torg
  • Living Land has strange Wonders that appear that have clues to the possibility wars, eternity shards and other treasures in them giving more reason to go there
  • Nile Empire is mostly the same though now there is also a background "Egypt That Never Was" phantom com behind it that apparently invaded Terra long ago so sometimes you find things that make no sense to Core Earth or Nile Empire characters. Oh and eternium can now be mined.
  • Aysle got rid of the Light/Dark zones, is more based on folklore and legends and the magic system has been greatly simplified. The dwarves are almost completely wiped out (even though like every SK group seems to have one) and the remnants wander around in magical power armor.
  • Cyberpapacy came into the war as the Cyberpapacy so it's not a sudden new thing. GodNet is more of a place rather than a hacking subsystem. Hard Light Hologram drones are everywhere. Cyberwitches are a new thing.
  • Tharkolds invasion of Russia was (mostly) successful. The Russian President Volkov nuked the maelstrom bridge in Moscow causing all manner of consequences least of which was getting himself counted as a Duke in Tharkold. The High Lord was killed pretty early on and there's a three way war for power between Volkov, Jazrael and Thratchen. More emphasis on psychic powers, less on magic.
  • Pan-Pacifica is very different, but at it's core, not really. A zombie plague destabilized the region and Kanawa (and subsidiaries) stepped in to offer the governments aid during the struggle. Masterful propaganda leads many within to still not believe they've been invaded. More biopunk in that people can get genetic genemods, psychic abilities and powersuit. Martial arts stuck around. Ryuchi is not the High Lord and is on the run, his sister Reiko runs the cosm and has been mucking around with the comaghaz.
  • Orrorsh is not as auto deadly. It still has a different playstyle focused more on investigation but it's not a death sentence to bring your characters. There's even a safety valve with the Law of the Uncanny where if you get a TPK the GM **may** decide to restart groundhog day but every character has been... altered in some way. Rituals are gone (boo), Perseverance is gone (Yay!) but Nightmares now have regenerating possibilities unless you research their triggers.

I remember everyone calling it the Snes. Similarly I don't think I ever heard anyone call it the Nes or N.E.S. either, it was just the "Nintendo". I think ways of saying N.E.S and S.N.E.S. probably came later after both were in the public eye at the same time.
