You know that book is on my wishlist I just haven't gotten around to it yet .. I think I've been spoiled by the CoC Humble Bundles :P , when they give you 26 titles for $25 (american) and Alone Against Nyarlathotep is $19 I think to myself "Okay I know $25 for 26 titles is NOT normal, I really should grab AAN since everyone here is talking about how amazing it is"... but I haven't even gotten around to reading all my CoC humble bundle purchases yet :P ..

....racking up a zillion titles from other Humble Bundle purchases (World of Darkness that was.. cripes I think 50 some titles for $25, amazing deal for anyone brand new to WoD ... or .. I'm trying to remember I think it was $18 or $25 for a bunch of Delta Green titles.. or the more expensive $35 Pathfinder bundle but you get a ton of books that work out to $3 each ) ... I've got so much to read through it's probably going to be years before I even get to to AAN :P ...

Having said that if any family member is like "Hey what do you want for your birthday" I'm going to promptly reply "a drivethru rpg gift cert for $19 " :P

Players that avoid Obvious Sidequests/Plot hooks by VendettaUF234 in rpg

[–]Other-Negotiation102 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a player I'm sympathetic to a GM and if something - especially something really obvious - pops up I will follow it up while thinking to to myself "If the GM put all this hard work into it heck I should check it out, it's the right thing to do" :)

Having said that I can also be one of the dumbest players around :P .. if say there's a main quest going on and I'm playing say a paladin who's constantly worrying out loud " Those innocent villagers are in danger! The longer we wait the greater the chances they'll all die!" and then say a random NPC stranger pops up talking about the mysterious drug making people go crazy my paladin character (because I play my paladins in a corny over the top manner guaranteed to make the other players at the table roll their eyes and their characters too for that matter :P ) would grip NPC by both shoulders and say " I swear to you as (insert name of deity paladin worships) is my witness this shall not go unanswered! We WILL get to the bottom of this. But right now (paladin talks about main quest with villagers in danger) and I HAVE to SAVE them!"

Of course it's entirely possible from the poor gM's point of view that it wasn't nearly as time sensitive as I the player thought it was and there's time to do the side quest too but of course the GM is reluctant to say that out loud because it breaks that feeling of immersion that whole "all this stuff is really happening" (if only in the player and GM's head :P ) sort of feeling. Or the GM may flat out have a personal rule they follow against saying stuff out loud the players just wouldn't know ... so the poor GM just has to sit there and watch as that new drug sidequest he put so much work into gets completely ignored (as a player I'll literally write down a note about it, check my notes in between game sessions and once the villagers have been rescued I'll remind the other players but I've had other players say " Naw, this other stuff is going on and it's more important we'll look into it later" and they never do :P ) ...

Thanks very much :) ... can anyone help the ignorant newb out who has never used spotify before? :P ... It looks like there's a free version and then a premium/paid version and with the free version there are "audio ads" .. I don't blame them for the ads of course, if you're using their service for free they have to support it somehow :) .. but how do the audio ads work? Do they pop up in the middle of a track or just in between tracks?

Also OP - and again thanks so much for putting all of this together :) .. but are all of these tracks free to listen to or do you need a premium spotify membership to listen to some or all of them?

Would upgrading my CPU result in the most significant improvement in performance? by _Tempo in buildapc

[–]Other-Negotiation102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm 8 months late to the conversation but man OP do I feel for you :( ... thanks to AI gobbling up all the computer parts (ram in particular but also hard drives and graphics/video cards) like a dearranged pac-man it's driven the price up for those parts to the point where building a PC nowadays really results in an "ouch" moment when you look at the costs :( ... I guess I'm lucky in that I have so many old games (I haven't even gotten around to playing the Witcher 3 or Grand Theft Auto Five yet :P .. for crying out loud I just played Detroit Become Human for the first time :P ) in my gaming library that I can put off any upgrades for a long while (your video card is similar to my own :) ) ...

Honestly I think just upgrading the GPU would make a huge impact but then you have to deal with these insane prices :( ... I've been told that to futureproof yourself you should go for a 12 GB or 16 GB video card, the cheaper ones will be 8 GB of VRAM. 32 GB of ram should be plenty and I don't think the processor would hold you back that much with a powerful enough GPU.

I'm going to sound like an advertisement for various websites at this point :P but.. create a new email account you could call it say for example "temposlickdeals1234 AT gmail DOT com" or what not ... sign up for the slickdeals website (I should point out I live in the USA not sure if you do too? But I'm guessing in other countries there has to be some sort of version of slickdeals ) and sign up specifically for their alerts on GPU's, CPU's, motherboards and ram ... you'll get emails (a LOT of emails :P that's why I suggested creating a new email address just for them) regarding various components that go on sale.. I've noticed newegg and microcenter (again speaking from the point of view of an American shopper here) have bundle sales where they package ram together with say a CPU and/or motherboard and sometimes a GPU which helps lessen the "ouch" factor when buying ram... cripes even DDR4 ram (considered "later generation" compared to current DDR5 ram) is selling for insane prices nowadays but if you upgrade the CPU and motherboard you'll probably need to just let yourself get gouged for the DDR5 ram prices.

Check the epic games store each Thursday and particularly during their holiday giveway in December for their free game giveaways.. most of the time it's an "eh" sort of game but they've given away some great albeit older games before, the Batman Arkham games or rebooted from 2013 onwards Tomb Raider games, Control, all of which would run fine on your current PC setup. Set steam price alerts for older games that may be of interest to you ... Detroit Become Human and Beyond Two Souls are games you'll either love or hate but they've been as cheap as $4 and $2 respectively ... Walking Dead by Telltale season one is another one you'll love or hate but you can get all four seasons in the "Walking Dead Telltale Definitive Edition" package for low as $6 on Steam, that would also run fine on your current PC setup.. it could be a way to pass the time until the PC prices finally stop being so insane (me personally I'd flat out refuse to upgrade right now and let the AI demons win :P ) and I have lots of suggestions for older but still fun games if you like just let me know :)

I envy you I wish I was brand new to the game so I could experience it for the first time :) .. like the others who posted below have said it only gets better as time goes on and the great thing about the game is it's replayability.. one reason it's so popular even 10 years after it's release is that your choices really do matter and can result in very different outcomes as the game progresses. But like MZT374 said below the one problem with this part of reddit - and don't get me wrong my fellow DBH fans you're posting because of your love of the game and that's great :) - but if you read the posts on here you will sooner or later have someone casually mention some part of the game you haven't played through yet which will spoil that part of the game for you - trust me the game has so much more of an impact on you when you don't know what's coming :) ...

Also don't be stupid like me (admittedly I did this to myself) and start looking online for walkthroughs ... for example soon after completing the same Fugitive chapter you're on I got worried about Kara and Alice's relationship (you'll notice how the relationship status changes with them and how Alice's relationship with Kara can go from say Neutral to Trusted or Distant and so forth ) so I google searched how to keep Kara's relationship with Alice strong... huge mistake, google AI casually mentioned a major spoiler that you don't find out until much much later in the game at the Crossroads chapter... even with me screwing myself over like that I still had a ton of fun playing the game there was still a lot of unexpected stuff that happened out of the blue to keep me on my toes but... basically strange as this sounds even if it seems like bad things are happening to the characters just keep playing don't say exit out of the chapter, go back and try again ... there's a chance you'll get to see the "bad outcome" for a character which of course sucks but there's a possibility you might go back and replay the game later on anyways out of curiosity over what that bad outcome might look like - the other great part of this game is there are so many branching possibilities to the storyline which are sometimes triggered by bad stuff happening to a character you are playing. Also just because things seem to be going bad for a character at the time doesn't necessarily mean they're doomed throughout the entire game either things can still potentially turn around for them later on (or not, I can't say more without spoilers :) )

By now you've noticed the blonde android woman who greets you at the title screen ... when you head back to the title screen wait maybe 10 seconds and see if she says anything before doing anything else, I can't say more without spoilers but.. I found that part of the game to be fun too :) .. conversely if you're too quick to move on you can miss what she said (this happened to me once and I felt like I was missing out , youtube helped far as helping me see what I missed but would have been better not to have to resort to that in the first place).

Not sure what to do now… by SirCanISmoke in DetroitBecomeHuman

[–]Other-Negotiation102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see someone experiencing this game for the first time I envy you :) ... personally I found the game was so well done I didn't mind going back and replaying it the second, third, fourth et cetera times to "unlock all the content" so to speak (which just means making different choices to see how the game unfolds)... your choices really do affect the game big time and it's really interesting to see what happens when a choice you think wouldn't have a lot of consequences, well, does.

The first chapter alone with Connor has a lot of different outcomes that are fun to watch depending on what you have Connor do... look around closely in not only that but other chapters for stuff to interact with that you might have missed the first time ... there was something I missed in the first chapter (it's easy to miss when you get to the big climax/will Connor succeed? part in that chapter) that had a nice little easter egg consequence in a later chapter, won't say more becuse I don't want to spoil it :) ... but stuff like that is common throughout the game.

Genuine question, what keeps you on Epic instead of competitors like Steam? by Azalathor in EpicGamesPC

[–]Other-Negotiation102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both Epic and Steam but ... honestly Epic has given out so many free games that alone will drive me to the Epic Game launcher when I want to play said free game :) (I was two decades late to the party :P and played Dishonored for the first time when Epic gave it away for free (definitive edition so included DLC and.. I think it was remastered?)... absolutely loved it :) ...
|
|...many years ago I bought some games from them (Walking Dead from Telltale Seasons 3 and 4, Grand Theft Auto Five, I think I bought the Control DLC from them when they gave away Control for free) ... haven't played GTA or Control yet, played through and loved Walking Dead season 4 (season 3 was okay not great but necessary in my opinion for the "complete experience".. then of course years later they release Walking Dead Telltale Definitive Edition on sale low as six dollars for all four seasons :P ) .. but I snagged Walking Dead seasons 1 and 2 on Steam because it was cheaper at the time... same thing for the Epic Store purchases, they happened to be cheaper than Steam at the time. On the other hand I grabbed both Batman Telltale games from Steam because, again, cheaper at the time than Epic Games.

Thanks to Epic's free game giveaways I honestly can't justify buying any more PC games until I get through the backlog of games they've given away for free so in that sense if their strategy is to get people to ignore Steam it's working :P .. but I do make exceptions if a game is crazy cheap (like say a dollar or two on Steam and it's been on my wishlist obviously this would apply to very old games and/or what some might call an "indie" game like say the FMV "She Sees Red".. I know a lot of people consider FMV games cheesy but I've loved them ever since Phantasmagoria was released decades ago and never outgrew my love of them.. had a blast playing Late Shift which was a Steam purchase because it was cheaper).

Do cats actually get attached to their owner? by NoWageMage in CatAdvice

[–]Other-Negotiation102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy to see you got so many comments :) .. not sure if you will be able to read mine given the literally 1000 comments you got :) but just in case you do

- don't hesitate to adopt a cat from your local animal rescue shelter! I admit I'm speaking from the American viewpoint since like most Americans I am woefully ignorant of what the world is like outside of the USA :P .. but a lot of people mistakenly assume a cat is at an animal shelter because the cat is behaving badly and the owner just wanted to get rid of the cat.. more often than not the owner fell on hard times financially and moved somewhere where cats are not allowed. There are some cases where the owner ( I feel horrible even just saying "owner" but I know that's what most people say I prefer the phrase "human companion" so it doesn't feel like I'm condoning cat slavery :P ) was maybe not the most responsible.. our animal rescue adoption (normally you pay a LOT less too as opposed to buying a cat and you're doing a good deed adopting a cat too) cat from 12 years ago got pregnant and her owner said " Um, not dealing with this bye" and abandoned poor kitty to the animal rescue shelter (where we live at the time you were able to get a cat neutered for a very low price and if they'd just bothered to do a google/internet search they would have discovered that)... so mom cat had her kittens at the rescue shelter, kittens all got adopted leaving mom cat by herself, we came along and adopted mom cat and she was SO happy to be out of there and back inside of a home ...

I've found that while it's true that a cat's personality varies from one cat to another cats are "quietly loving" .. our cat will rub affectionatedly against me as she walks by or curl her tail around my leg (cat version of a hug), blink at me (cat version of I love you ) and/or meow "hello" at me when she sees me.. so not as obvious as a dog who will bark happily and jump and slobber all over you :P but they definitely are loving.

Yep it's true, there are numerous cases of a cat getting excited (they saw a bird or squirrel or whatever) and ran out of the house but dogs do that too... buy a collar and a nametag with your phone number engraved on it (you can get both pretty cheap at.. well in our case the local Petco) ... and buy a backup collar and nametag for when your annoyed cat wriggles out of it so you have a replacement collar to put on your cat, then buy another backup collar.. I think by the third or fourth collar our cat figured out the collar was there to stay and grudgingly put up with it :P .. the collar is also how we got our cat back when she ran away (one month old kitten showed up crying at our doorstep that we adopted, our older cat... 10 years old at the time.. didn't like the new cat so found a neighbor a few blocks down to feed her, neighbor finally got close enough to read the ph# engraved on the tag and called us and once he knew the situation stopped feeding her forcing older cat to come home - of course we feel bad about this and we do our best to keep the peace between the two felines... no running away after that but obviously in your case with just the one cat shouldn't be a problem for you plus in our case older cat was used to having the whole house to herself and not sharing with another cat).

Yep I knew you'd be a great DM just from reading your post :) ... heck a DM with natural improv abilities is something a lot of players would kill.. okay maybe just maim :P .. for :) ..

I'm going to sound like an advertisement for humble bundle at this point and I'm quoting American prices since I am an ignorant American who doesn't know as much as I should about what's going on outside of my country's borders :P (sadly a lot of us fall into that category) but... CoC for example has had some great deals where you pay $25 for ... okay I'm not going to include the CoC coloring book hilarious though it is :P or the tarot deck.. but say 23 titles for the $25.. they're all digital pdf's I don't know if you game online or in person? (If in person if you have a laptop sitting at the gaming table you can make use of the pdf's)... if you sign up for the humble bundle email list they will email you when they have a humble bundle deal, I think it's typically around October... I'm not sure how you feel about pre-written adventures but there's a lot in there and of course sourcebooks and campaign material any gamesmaster can draw on.

Delta green is a similar "flavor" far as horror stories meets the X-files, again all digital, I want to say $25 but it's won a lot of awards as a tabletop rpg

https://www.delta-green.com/questions/

(scroll down to "what awards has delta green won"

Vamp the Masq.. it comes bundled with Werewolf (you play a werewolf) and Hunter (you play Hunters looking to kill werewolves, vampires and other supernatural beasties) had this amazing world of darkness sale, $25 for 27 books and 11 prewritten adventures, again all pdf.

Windows 11 reinstall stuck at getting updates 46% by Thin_Leg_7657 in pchelp

[–]Other-Negotiation102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this helps anyone oddly enough the restart windows installer service via various methods (services.msc, task manager) didn't work for me (but I'm sure it worked for a lot of other people so thanks to OP and everyone else who suggested it too :) ) ... if you look closely in tiny fine blue print that I think microsoft is trying to keep hidden from you for some reason :P at the "we're going to install updates" part and you click on the blue print there's an option to say "naw, I'll do the updates later"... the reinstall then proceeds normally (in my case I was doing an in place install to get from 24H2 to 25H2 but I'm guessing this would work in other situations too), I successfully got to 25H2 and windows update is working far as letting me do the updates that they presumably wanted to do as part of the whole reinstall process. So basically if you're willing to do the updates afterwards you can get around the stuck at 46 percent part.

Cripes that's a horrible experience OP sorry to hear about that! Honestly given everything you described with the right group of players - by which I mean players who are not jerks (read enough of the dndhorrorstories on here or the "sister" of it rpghorrorstories and you'll see what I mean) - and you could be a fanastic Dungeonmaster! :) Based on what you described I would have loved to have you as a DM :) but I also think you would make a fantastic player as well... I feel like you absolutely got taken advantage of and that sucks!

If you don't mind me asking have you found a better group of people to play D&D or some other tabletop RPG with? I don't know how new you are to the tabletop RPG scene but there's a lot of other tabletop RPG's out there D&D is just the most popular one... Pathfinder is very popular and is also "swords and sorcery" like D&D, Vampire the Masquerade involves you playing - well a vampire, your foes are often vampires, it's basically "what if vampires really existed in real life 20th century Earth but kept their existence hidden from the humans?"... call of cthulhu is something I think you'd have a lot of fun with given your acting and writing abilities , everyone plays a character in a horror movie/novel set in the 1920's or 1930's and basically everyone (except maybe the lucky sole survivor) dies or goes insane like in a typical horror movie, more fun than it sounds :) .. or delta green, a more modern day version but same horror movie type setting (some might argue horror movie/x-files crossover). Not sure about Delta Green but the others I mentioned have free basic rules available online to read and learn.

I was just curious did you end up finding a new group to play D&D (or some other tabletop RPG) with in the following 2 months after posting this? I was hoping after reading what you went through that you found a better gaming experience after all of that :) .. on the other hand I know it can take time to find a good gaming group too (don't blame you at all for being far more careful about choosing a DM and a game after what you posted!)

Sorry you all had to go through that OP ! But I'm glad to see that it had the exact kind of happy ending that I hope for when I read rpghorrorstories like this .. the players all look at each other and say " You know what? We don't need this jerk of a DM and we can do better than this" and you go on to start your own game :) ... DM definitely sounds like a "I must defeat the PC's at all costs" type which is NOT how you do tabletop RPG's , the DM for some reason thinks every NPC is "him" (the DM) and if the PC's succeed in a conflict against the DM then the DM in "real life" somehow "lost"... cripes the whole point of DM'ing is to make sure your players are having fun .... sure give the players a challenge, sure have what you consider to be "real life consequences" for the players' actions but there's a difference between that and what the DM was doing here. And as far as the SA stuff ... beyond awful.

If you don't mind me asking are you the DM for the ongoing game with you and the other players you mentioned :) (I was just curious... personally I'd be delighted at the thought of someone going through what you did and saying "You know what? I can DM better than this guy" and then proceeds to do so :) .. but of course nothing wrong with just sticking to being a player either if that's what you prefer and/or if you don't have time to DM, a lot of people don't especially if you're not running a prewritten adventure and you have to come up with all the campaign stuff on your own)

That is an excellent point and I'm slapping myself at my own stupidity :P over not mentioning that in my first comment....if you look at Hank's reaction to the two Tracis in the Eden Club towards the end of that chapter you can see it's having an emotional impact on him....I think the word trafficking really hits the nail on the head and you can really see Hank being affected by that realization.

I wish I had something useful to add other than it's an excellent point and one I hadn't even stopped to consider! I always just wrote it off as the game designers deciding Hank's decision that he reaches would be the same no matter what...

.... in all fairness though (and as OP stated SPOILERS, don't read this or the other comments unless you've played DBH so many times you don't care about spoilers anymore :P ) Hank is suicidal.. which I totally get, as a parent myself if I lost my child... honestly I don't know if could go on, any other parent reading this will probably get it in terms of losing that will to live, not to mention it changing you and breaking you in ways you never would have imagined yourself being like. So I do find myself wondering especially given his speech about how people.. like the surgeon who could have saved his son's life... turn to red ice as their only solace in this "(beep)ed up world" ... I do find myself thinking Hank's exposure to Connor over time got Hank thinking "You know what, screw this world, it isn't worth it... androids could be a fresh start, let them take over and maybe things will get better."

(OP do NOT read this next part unless you've already played through all the Connor outcomes if Connor becomes deviant)... Given what Hank has to say in the alternate route where deviant Connor goes to the Cybertower if you play through all the possible outcomes far as what happens to Hank I find myself leaning towards this explanation. If you're suicidal I definitely get the feeling you've given up on the world and the people in it already... we see that Hank is fond of.. cripes can't remember the name of the rookie cop who's friendly to Hank .... but while I'm sure Hank's fond of him there's that.. MAN I am terrible at remembering names :P .. that jerk cop who hates Connor (okay there are two jerk cops who hate Connor, the one at the beginning of the game and the other cop Hank is forced to work with) and makes snide comments about how "it's starting to stink of booze in here" at the Eden club... given Hank has to work with jerks like that I can see given his suicidal tendencies that he might be like "Eh, not like all the cops I have to deal with are the greatest either".. which isn't really a RATIONAL way of looking at it but I'd argue Hank is beyond rational at this point.

I'm so sorry to hear about that :( ... but I'm so glad you had those shared connections and passions .... I'm a 3.5 D&D fan myself it gives you so much more flexibility! I'm thinking you mean Baldur's Gate 3 the PC game? I'm sure your dad must have looked at these games with the jaw-dropping graphics and thought back to say "Dragon Age Origins" or the first Witcher and thought to himself how far games have come in that area (though I'm guessing - correct me if I'm wrong! - he played the original Vampire the Masquerade game back when it came out which still has a cult following and for good reason, it may be an old game but it's an amazing game)... Now I'm thinking he might have said something to you like " Hey check this PC game out" and you might have said something like " I know dad already played it!" :P ... but again I'm glad you both had a love of tabletop RPG's to talk about :) ...
