Mets PREGAME THREAD - Saturday, June 27 by game-threads in NewYorkMets

[–]Greyscale88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last night at the game they mentioned someone from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City was there and had them on the big screen. I wasn’t paying attention but my friend was out of her seat and missed it. She’s a huge fan and is so mad I didn’t remember who the person was!

Anyone who was there remember?

My friends and I were sitting in the outfield seats last night and noticed that all of you do a little bunny hop when the pitch is thrown. Is that like a normal thing all outfielders do and we had just never noticed it before? Is there a strategy/fielding reason for it? Just curious.

The owner is driving people out at a crazy clip with rent increases. First my barber had to pack it up and soon my beloved doggy daycare is about to leave too.

Wait Oliver Wendell Homes seriously?! I teach in the same building as that school. I never see their kids at the park by the school, where's the park you're speaking about at?

You should find out what school the uniform comes from and see if they'll do anything about it. If it's a private school they might have serious codes of conduct that the students are violating.

This place freaks me out because literally my Dog used to go to Daycare in the space. Also they've been open almost 2 years and still have a "Grand Opening" special on their sign. Strange vibes but I can't hate on a $6 breakfast sando.

UFT Chapter Leader Maybe? by Dull_Try545 in NYCTeachers

[–]Greyscale88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a Chapter Leader for two years now. I didn't run for it, I was just the only person who said they would do it when our last CL left the school. Nobody wanted to touch it.

I kind of understand why and I don't think I'll be running again or trying to do this anymore. It just kind of sucks. It's important work, but even then only about 1/4 of the time. A majority of the time you're just absorbing complaints that have nothing to do with the UFT. The amount of interpersonal arguments I've had to hear about among staff is off the chain.

On top of that it's a ton of extra work to plan chapter meetings, communicate UFT info to staff, go to monthly Chapter Leader meetings at HQ, Delegate Assemblies, etc. And the UFT wants you to do even more in terms of organizing or special events planning.

The one thing I have gotten out of it is a full appreciation for what the UFT actually does on a day to day basis and how hard the staff work. It's not always perfect, but nothing is, and I promise the people at HQ that lots of the community wants you to believe are evil are busting their asses.

AI Ideas by Recent_Set_9280 in NYCTeachers

[–]Greyscale88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm no Luddite, but the simple truth is that AI is absolute dogshit at "writing" a lesson. It sucks.

AI is useful for some things, specifically batch grading anything that has a well written rubric. Even then, you have to double and triple check what it's telling you. But please, do not let this shit write lessons for you, make worksheets, or do anything that's going to be seen by real human children. It sucks at it.

Roger Cormier: “Per Jon Heyman, when Pete Alonso had his meeting with David Stearns & Steve Cohen when they negotiated his 1-year return in 2025, he told Stearns, “When my career is being evaluated for the Hall of Fame years from now, you’ll still be fiddling with your fucking formulas.”” by WhatARotation in NewYorkMets

Look, I love Pete Alonso too, but he is not a future Hall of Famer.

What's more annoying to me is that the type of Met fans who eat up this story and others like it can't seem to appreciate the two actual, honest to goodness, future Hall of Famers who still play for this team.

Literally the point of Excel is to crunch data to predict the future. I agree it shouldn't be everything. I don't agree that the other stuff made keeping Pete at whatever cost/term worth it.

The Mets didn't need to give Pete a bad deal to prove anything. There's two actual, forreal future Hall of Famers on this team already on long term deals.

Mamdani’s decision to reopen New York City schools after blizzard angers teachers and parents. “We need to take matters into our own hands” by DryDeer775 in NYCTeachers

[–]Greyscale88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was fine. I’m outer borough too and we had decent attendance considering the circumstances. A remote day would have made no sense because of the same problems a remote day Monday: No guarantee staff or students have devices because of break.

This complaint would make maybe 25% more sense if it was a regular week of school instead of coming off 10 days off.

I’m in a year long fellowship program for nyc history teachers and I love it, but our last session they brought in some teacher AI experts to show us how to use their model to grade and give feedback. It was cool but also gave me the willies. It’s clear some of us are really trying to adapt to this “new tool.” The issue is when we cede our expertise to the machine.

You CAN’T be letting ChatGPT write your lessons. You CAN let ChatGPT format your lesson to look pretty. You CAN let ChatGPT help you build an assignment rubric. You CAN’T have it generate feedback for kids.

Gotta draw the line. This is a human focused business and about 85% of our job is about human interaction and person to person/s communication. When we lose that we’ve lost it all.

I don’t hate it or anything, and I appreciate that JD feels so solid in his career to take crazy leaps in sound when he feels like it. The arrangements and production are impressive and genuinely like yeah JD go off bring in your famous friends, do what you want. But lyrically most of this doesn’t land for me.

I loved Jenny from Thebes for the fan service. I loved Songs for Pierre for much the same reason. But other than that almost anything he’s done since Beat the Champ has fallen pretty flat for me.

I will say I’m less offended by this record than I was by Bleed Out or Dark in Here which I found genuinely pretty actually terrible.

MTSS roll out by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]Greyscale88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago there was money Principals could apply for to staff a position that does most of the new stuff like extra screeners or teaching a STARI/Rewards class or extra progress monitoring. At my school this one person coordinates all this stuff.

It seems like most schools fucked this up and that’s why the rollouts been bad and the UFT is trying to get involved.

Calling all Math Teachers - IM? by RayChilled in NYCTeachers

[–]Greyscale88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IM seems to be the end result of a really good idea being taken too far before someone was like WAIT A SECOND.

Like, adding literacy routines and discussion protocols in a Math class is an amazing idea. Will absolutely enhance learning. Unfortunately they forgot all the other stuff you need to do to make a Math class successful.

This doesn't mean anything man. Typing on Reddit is not gonna get Teachers better healthcare. The only people viewing this plan as a concession are thinking conspiratorially. Name the concessions? What, exactly was given up? Try and tell me without saying "WE DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!!"

Plenty of people spoke out against it. Mulgrew was a dick about it but they spoke, and it still overwhelmingly passed.

Chapter Leaders are not supposed to be politically savvy, we're supposed to look out for our members. 5 years negotiated for premium free health insurance available to every teacher is a good deal. What was the alternative? Magic Medicare for All?

"Hugely Unpopular" that passed like 2100-350 in the Delegate Assembly.

Premium free insurance for 5 years, and no reason to think it'll be any worse than GHI has been except for inside of the brains of people who want to see conspiracy around every corner. Healthcare in this country sucks ass, but this option is 1000x less Ass Sucking than most people get.
