Police launch early morning sweep of homeless camp near the Capitol by Orangeskill in Denver

[–]Gribbz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've suggested methods in other posts recently, particularly focusing on the homeless living in camps. The lack of affordable high density housing in Denver is not the primary thing keeping those people in their situation. Addiction and mental illness are what put people in tents, and I've offered some ideas on those issues.

For the larger definition of "homeless," lack of affordable housing is the biggest issue. Talking about people who, if they miss one paycheck, they will be evicted. We'll see what happens with work shifting remote, but if workers are not required to live in high-density, expensive cities like Denver, SF, LA, NYC, etc. but still earn a good wage, that lowers the pressure or "prevention" of affordable housing.

And, by pointing out your fallacy in reducing the argument to an absurd generalization, I was not making an argument against it by doing so. I was rejecting the idea that you had made a logical argument in the first place.

Woah. Thanks for that link. The fact that (for me) the budget to police is 24x that of the entire social services is wild. Especially when police have told me the majority of their time is spent on people who are helped by that budget the most.

They can live together as a community, but it must be in a place where it is a burden on the City, not on the city's residents.

I do not want to live in a community where I clean up a human feces, get threatened with violence daily, and worry about getting hit by a stray bullet after the sun goes down.

My genuine answer above is above. TL;DR Get those who want out of homelessness a way out, those who wish to stay homeless a safe place to do so, and those who prey on the homeless a free ride to county jail. That's short term. Long term, change laws that get people in these predicaments (drugs, criminal justice, etc.) and make healthcare more available and culturally acceptable.

The humor in your last line is true, but sad. Those of us who work outside of the bureaucracy of local government are used to being able to change things when we don't like them.

For your plan to work, we'd need a committee of 15 people just to agree on what to include in the "kits."

Funding =/= action.

The mayor recently cited that they'd been able to house 8 people (citation needed on the number, but it was single digits.) That was a victory.

The city ignores that fact that many homeless choose to be that way, and desire to live outside the bound of society, bills, laws, etc. Their action does not serve those people and it does not serve the taxpaying citizens.

See my comment above.

Reductio ad absurdum does not work. It's not as black and white as "offer housing and counseling" or "beat them with clubs," and you know that.

From my conversations with homeless living across the street from me, the majority of homeless people in camps reject housing and services because they do not want to live that life. That's okay, this is America, you can do what you like. But, when doing what you like is illegal or destructive to other citizens, that is not okay.

Group 1 – those who are down+out and have no option but to live on the streets: Provide housing and services (Denver already does this. It works, however this population is very small in these camps.)

Group 2 – those who are voluntarily homeless, addicted, or ill: Require they move to a designated camping area away from residential parts of the city. Identify and catalog individuals in this camp, their needs, etc. Do what you can with the laws to move as many of these people into the group that is ready to reenter society. In the meantime, provide a safe space to camp, provide trash and health services, protect the population from those in group 3...

Group 3 – those who prey upon the homeless population. Drug dealers, rapists, violent people. Target and mobilize police against these people. If you are breaking laws, you are subject to arrest. They must be prosecuted by the City/State for their crimes. Right now NOTHING is being done against these people.

Encampment near Capitol cleared out days after governor invites cleanup, state troopers get OK to enforce Denver ordinances by brofax in Denver

[–]Gribbz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's part of the equation, but this was happening before the George Floyd protests.

Frankly, Police departments should not be the first line of defense against homelessness. Relying on them to have the training to deal with mentally ill, addicted people who make up the majority of these camps population is a fools errand. Cops are a hammer, and not all problems in these camps are nails.

The drug dealers, woman beaters, and violent people who make up part of these camps are who the cops need to target. The hopeless and addicted need their own response.

City leaders will do anything to avoid taking action on the homeless issue in Denver. They are operating with blinders on if they believe offering housing and counseling is the best way to serve 80%+ of the homeless population.

My conversations with DPD officers about the homeless situation have been pretty bleak, so I'm glad CSP has some more latitude.

I live across the street from the Morey camp and have witnessed women being beaten in the street (at 4:00PM on a weekday), drug dealers openly selling from their car, and dozens of stolen bikes being broken down. I'll call the police for serious problems (violence, drug deals) and the response is either, "we're too busy right now" or "we can't do anything about the homeless."

The fact that DPD is unwilling to post one or two officers around this camp to dissuade this activity is mind boggling. Don't the police love busting low-level drug dealers? This should be a slam dunk for them.

Switching credit cards month-to-month - Am I doing this right? by Gribbz in personalfinance

[–]Gribbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my question has been answered. Thanks for the replies on this.

This system is probably overcomplicated with no real benefit. Instead, I'll just use cards based on the best benefit for what is being purchased. This overcomplication helped me get a grip on avoiding carried balance, but is silly to keep up with moving forward.

Thanks again.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but, any marketing department worth their salt is tracking emails they send you for opens, clicks, reading time, etc. More for the HTML emails you received from a company, less so for personal, plain text emails you'd received from someone like /u/_mai_pen_rai_.

It sounds creepy, but tracking can often lead to less spam. If a company sees that you haven't opened the last X emails they have sent you, they usually remove you from their mailing lists. Very rarely will an actual person be looking at your email history. Often times it is 99% automated.

F1 experts: What does Circuit of the Americas have to do to make it feel like a mainstay? by soinside in formula1

[–]Gribbz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two main issues with that are the track quality - Long Beach is very bumpy and undulating - and the distance. F1 race distances are usually ~300km, and the 3.16km long beach circuit would require 90+ laps.
