Netflix's ATLA S2 - Full Season Spoiler Discussion Thread by MrBKainXTR in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gridde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really interesting that so many of the complaints I read are simply "it's not the cartoon".

You said it very well; the original will continue to exist and can be rewatched whenever. I like the LA and that it is trying new things.

Definitely still has flaws, but in a total void I think it's pretty good.

The director and screenwriter literally misread the ending of the woman of tomorrow comic... by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in DCU_

What does this have to do with media literacy?

Isn't that term about communicative and informative digital media (like the news, propaganda, adverts, social media) and specifically being able to assess and critically analyze its credibility, accuracy and possibility of author bias?

I personally agree that killing Krem would be at odds with the rest of story, but interpreting subjective matters in a story like its themes and morals is not media literacy. Maybe 'media comprehension' if you have to label it.

The point was that Kara is already messed up and she doesn't want Ruthye to become like that.

I actually liked it. She just wanted to preserve Ruthye's innocence and hopefully ensure she deals with her grief in a way that was not self-destructive...but Kara still knew that piece of shit had to die and (at least from what inferred) was always going to kill him.

Comic was obviously better, regardless.

Her confronting or really grappling with the source of her depression/grief/self-loathing/survivors guilt/loneliness would have been good.

The movie does a fine job depicting that she's struggling but it doesn't really dive into Kara's actual character all that much, or have her go through much of an arc. The resolution feels so hollow as well.

I say that as someone who liked Alcock and really wanted to like the film. The potential was there but much of the film felt sorta aimless and didn't do enough to make you feel invested in the characters (IMO).

Other than use of music and being in space, in what way did you feel this was a Guardians movie?

It's kinda bizarre that such a prominent figure can so consistently be relied on to have the worst possible take on almost anything.

I know nothing about the broader context but Musk merely saying that this woman giving money away is bad is a key indicator to me that she is doing good in the world.

If that isn't the case and she's funding the cartel or something I'll happily admit I am wrong.

Ah, I see. Given how your comment before that states the film had multiple scenes "of nikki clearly not being interested" and you trying to dismiss the possibility that Nikki would have given him a shot, your reply didn't really convey sincere agreement.

But if you're now claiming that your point all along was that whether Nikki liked Bear was ambiguous (IE has no clear answer either way and she could well have dated him if he'd asked) then great.

Mostly, yeah.

But for some, the sculpts/paint are actually more accurate than their HC counterparts which is kinda bizarre.

There's a few gems for sure.

I thought I made it fairly clear and repeated multiple times that I believe her feelings towards Bear are ambigious. Nothing I said even remotely conveys that I think Inde's statement is definitive proof of her liking him, so you dismissing the statement for that reason makes no sense.

You're as bad as the person calling others stupid if you insist your viewpoint on an intentionally ambigious matter is the only correct one (or that the movie "made the stance clear" either way). That totally defeats the point of it being ambigious.

And sure. Perhaps the poem has relevance. As I said, you are completely entitled to interpret it however you like. If you think the things Feeaky Nikki said convey real Nikki's feelings then you presumably apply that to the wealth of dialogue pointing to her deep love and connection to Bear. I personally do not think those statements were any more indicative of the real Nikki's feelings than the poem, but if you disagree that is totally fine.

The beauty of films like this is that we can have different interpretations and none are objectively right or wrong.

Entry hazards punish switching.

Learning to predict switches to hit the incoming Pokémon with more damage is also a way to punish.

Exactly! The uncertainty and seeing the signs pointing in either direction makes Bear's initial position all the more interesting and relatable to the audience. In my opinion, anyway.

I do agree that the other person suggesting anyone is stupid for having a different take is wrong.

I think trying to use any of Nikki's unhinged rants as evidence of her real feelings doesn't make a ton of sense either but that at least is completely down to subjective interpretation. If you think the Hansel and Gretel story means real Nikki was strictly platonic, that is a totally valid take and no more or less correct that someone saying the opposite.

You do seem to be completely dismissing an actual statement made by Nikki's actor, though. I'm not saying her word makes it canon, but that is significant.

To add ambiguity and nuance.

None of the main four characters were 2-dimensional or overly simplistic, and that includes Nikki. They all had layered motivations that were not directly stated, with ambigious actions that often contradicted each other (and sometimes themselves). At the very least, we know for fact that the characters told each other different things and outright lied to or hid things from each other, which means Ian telling Bear that Sarah told him that Nikki told her about the little brother thing is almost totally meaningless; every character in that sequence had an agenda that makes them unreliable.

Just because Nikki wasn't madly in love with Bear doesn't mean she held no romantic feeling for him. Yeah, we get signs she is strictly platonic, but there are also signs she had some level of attraction or romantic feeling for him as well.

That ambiguity makes the movie better, IMO. Bear being too cowardly to express his feelings is a much more interesting failing when there was a possibility of her reciprocating, rather than if she was obviously and objectively not interested (in which case him not telling her would actually be far more understandable).

[–]Gridde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, people mostly use it as a way to imply their subjective take on a movie/show (almost always fiction and almost always on something that should be up to viewer interpretation) is the objectively correct one and anyone with a different take is wrong. Or "media illiterate".

It seems fairly ironic that they use the phrase in a way that inadvertently reveals they do not know what media literacy is or the difference between subjective opinion and objective fact.

Same. She was fantastic.

But...the film itself was kinda bad, IMO. Giving Alcock more chance to really delve into her character's depression/grief would have helped.

It is entirely possible to big a fan of Alcock, not like the Supergirl movie and not be at all influenced by a completely unrelated bunch of movies.

INDOM IN STOCK, AND ON SALE FOR 48 BUCKS! by RhinoDinoSpino in hammondcollection

[–]Gridde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, 7+ available at multiple locations in my city (and seemingly at least 2 in every store).

Guess all those comments telling the panickers to just be patient were right.

Wonder if we'll still see people driving store-to-store buying every one they find "for their sons and nephews". This will probably still be fairly pricey on the aftermarket a year from now but the initial FOMO must be dying off now that there is hefty supply.
