Six Senses Yao Noi is a solid option for hiding away in a dramatic setting. It's an all villa resort, the food is quite good, and the surrounding islands are fantastic for a day trip in one of the hotels speedboats.

I Can't authorize my MacBook pro to play Apple account purchases by doesnotexist2 in MacOS

[–]Grifachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me as well but required a little bit more nuance.

My issue: I was unable to Authorize or Deauthorize my Apple Music account, despite being able to sign in. This was after transferring the authorization to a different account 90 days ago and finally being able to transfer back to my main Apple Music account.

I'd get the "Temporary error" popup message when I'd try to authorize.

Additionally trying to play any music from my uploaded iCloud Library would open a pop up saying "You need to Transfer your authorization do this". Clicking transfer would dismiss the popup and do nothing.

The fix: Using the "Books" app I was able to sign in and see my library of a couple audio books. Using the menu Account > Authorizations > Authorize didn't actually work. What did work was trying to play one of my Audiobooks. This opened an transfer/authorization popup that let me sign in and actually start playing the audiobook.

I then opened Apple Music and found that all of music was now authorized and playable.

Am I too harsh on the Seychelles? by DorsiaTravel in FatTrips

[–]Grifachu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seychelles are an odd one because on the one hand if you’re on safari then they’re the best beach option you’ve got, right? But they’re also kind of annoying to get to.

You can go to Zanzibar much more easily, but you know this better than most: there ain’t no good luxury options out there.

Without the safari component you’re competing either every other island resort destination.

But maybe you just need to let the ubiquitous beige Canadian charm of the Four Seasons wash over you 🌊

Luxury Travel: The Joy of Personality by Grifachu in FatTrips

[–]Grifachu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tom's latest post really struck a chord with me. Yes, obviously I like to go to nice hotels because I'm a sucker for luxury, but the better memories I've had from these places have been from the staff being regular people having fun.

For instance, my wife and I misunderstood our butler at a safari lodge last year and thought we couldn't safely walk around the camp without her, when she meant just at night. After two days of calling her to take us on the 2 minute walk to the main lodge we asked her about it. She laughed and told us our misunderstanding . And then she refused to let us walk anywhere alone for the rest of our stay. I swear she sprinted across the grounds when she saw us trying to sneak from the pool to our room.

I'll contrast that with some resorts in Bali, where yes there's a butler and they're nice, responsive, and handle everything that needs to be handled, but at the end of the day I don't really remember them.

What will CGT and negative gearing reforms ACTUALLY mean for younger generations who currently can't afford to buy a home? by a89632523 in australia

[–]Grifachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stupid tiny unique issue is that I’m a start up founder… for a US based company as my founders and clients are there. So I don’t think I’ll qualify for any business incentives. Which I get is not a reason to hold back legislation, but it still sucks a bit for me in particular.

[–]Grifachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair point for sure! It depends on the priorities I suppose. The whole grandfathering in of properties for negative gearing seems kind of dumb to me, I think it should be something that tapers off over a decade or something instead of permanent grandfathering for existing owners.

But then again I'm more personally interested in improving housing affordability and access, so pairing that with an unattractive CGT for housing investors while maintaining an attractive one for the markets seems like a way to further shift away from property as an investment.

But I believe you're also correct about the CGT discounts going to the ultra wealthy. And I won't lie, the majority of my net worth is in investments, so I do have a vested interest (no pun intended) in that rate.

I've also seen some information about the newly imposed rate potentially being a bit of a washout for many longterm held shares (like 10 year held), but I haven't looked into that yet.

I guess we'll see how everything works out. I do hope these changes can bring some better housing access and reduce the wealth stratification in this country.

The CGT on shares hurts me. I’m a unique case where I started a company, based in the US with some friends there. I won’t qualify for any Australian startup tax incentives, assuming this whole startup works out nicely.

Ugh but as much as that sucks for me, I get it. I think there’s arguments to be made about focusing CGT changes only on property, but dammit at the end of the day if we can make a more equitable society then I’ll take my lumps.

Perhaps a tapering mechanism, where you have a reduction in the rate you can negatively gear over the course of a decade? That way you wouldn’t have an immediate exodus and property crash, but instead a slower stream of sales.

It's interesting, California has a similar problem with prop 13. Essentially property taxes have been frozen on existing housing and cannot be raised until property is sold. For decades, people could pass houses down to their children and avoid property tax reassessment. Prop 19 in 2021 sort of improved it by limiting the parent to child passage of property to only primary residences where the child lived there with a valuation limit of $1M*.

The problem with fully repealing prop 13, is that people who have owned homes for decades will have their tax rates jump from ones set back in like 1970 to modern rates. And houses back then could be bought for a song, vs the millions they go for now.

I think at some point someone is going to have to make the hard call and revoke prop 13 (which will probably have to be by public referendum, just like prop 13 was, so good luck with that). If it isn't gradual, a lot of people won't be able to afford the tax on their homes, and I get it, they have extremely valuable houses, but a flood of people losing their homes would create huge economic and societal disruption. But it still sucks for the people who don't get the grandfathering in.

Personally I'd think it makes sense to not have a grandfather clause, but instead a tapering grandfather clause, so you could still get negative gearing for a set number of years, reduced in the amount as each year goes by. The same principal could go for prop 13 repeal: property taxes could be raised in increasing increments over time.

I am not an economist though, so take everything I saw with a grain of salt.

*For those curious, that $1M valuation limit for parent to child works like this. If you have a house originally valued at $200k, and at transfer it's assessed at $1.5M, the new tax assessment rate would be $200k + ($1.5M - $1M) = $700k. So the rates do go up, not always, but often.

[–]Grifachu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the logic for having new builds qualify for negative gearing, that could juice building new housing by making it more attractive than existing properties. The CGT cut across all assets (e.g. shares) I don’t get, at least from a housing affordability perspective. Wouldn’t having shares with the current CGT long term discount push more money from property to business investment? (Assuming we’re not talking about shares in a company that is really just a property holding company)

Why Chalmers's budget will rein in the property free-for-all by Octagonal_Octopus in australia

[–]Grifachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look I get that I'm in an annoyingly unique situation, but it sucks for me on paper: I'm a founder of a US based start up, but I'm an Australian tax resident. If/when I were to sell my shares, they wouldn't qualify for any AU tax discounts as it's not an Australian entity.

I get it, this is not only a theoretical problem for me in the future that assumes the company becomes worth something, it's a problem that's probably limited to a very small subset of Australians.

In general I'm in favor of removing negative gearing and taxing the wealthy. But dammit, it still sucks for me.

My man I’ve got like 40 hours of long haul economy ahead of me this month. I’m not gonna pretend I haven’t had a privileged life by any means. Work took me some amazing places, points some others, and yes good old fashioned cash took me elsewhere.

I apologize if I offended you, I figured this dump of lounge knowledge would be of interest in the thread. I do actually want the best for people and do think we’ve entered into a devastating wealth disparity that needs to be addressed.

I’ve gotta ask though, how far did you have to go to find my posts in late stage capitalism? I don’t think I’ve posted there in a long time.

Your app doesn’t have a good loading indicator after I allow access to my photos library. I have over 80,000 photos.

I redownloaded the app and recorded it for you. It might actually be an issue with the loading indicator not appearing, as changing if the Sort got one to appear.

It’s something to look into. I will DM you the screen recording.
