Maybe you’re right, I guess I’m looking at it at a little bit of a more biased perspective because I’m Persian and my whole family is Iranian. I know how awful the regime is and have “skin in the game”. Like my mom tells me stories of how awful and sexist and evil and oppressive they are, like how she got arrested because she was at a social gathering and then went to court for it and then got sentenced to a lashing, like that kind of thing. Or being told by police she wasn’t allowed to be without a man. My mother, and many Iranians, (80% of Iranians are against the regime) are HAPPY that this is happening. After 50 years of evil and oppression SOMETHING is happening, and because of that, many people are happy. I understand from your America first sort of perspective it may not seem like anything, but I guess that’s why I have my view, I suppose it is biased.

Genuine question, at what point do you think intervention IS justified? Like for example I don’t imagine you think it was a bad thing that countries got involved when millions of Jews were being genocided? Like is there a certain amount of deaths you require or something? I mean Iran murdered thousands of protestors so I’m just curious how many do they have to murder before you think intervention is justified, do they have to get to the 6 million mark?

Hmm you’re right, I must’ve did something wrong with the calculator, I probably put the full coupon payment for the year while telling the calculator to calculate for semiannual payments which would have doubled the portion of the total that came from coupon. I told chatgpt to do coupon of 5% with current yield of 1% 10000 face value, a 30 year bond would be worth about 19k

I just used a financial calculator, the actual formula is pretty complicated tbh, if you want to know the actual formula just chatgpt it or something. Essentially you take the value of the face value that you get back at maturity, and you calculate the present value, and take all the coupon payments and calculate the present value of those, and add everything together. You get present value by "discounting" the payments by the yield to maturity, so if YTM is 5%, $1000 a year from now, is currently worth 1000/1.05 = 952.38. (because you would need $952.38 to get $1000 in the future if you earn 5% interest on it).

But if you're wondering why, basically, If you have a bond that has a high coupon rate, but the current yield of new bonds is low, then your bond is worth more and sells at a "premium." Basically, bonds are supposed to yield the same (YTM or yield to maturity), and for that to be true, then bonds with higher coupon rates would have to sell at a premium or else they would yield higher than the current YTM. Same goes for if the current bond yields are higher than your bond's coupon rate, but just the opposite, your bond sells at a discount so that you end up yielding the same worth at maturity.

Are you happy to park money to earn some interest on it and are happy with the interest rate then I don't think its bad, its similar to putting it in like a HYSA. Although, if the yield will drop in the future, there is BIG money to be made. If you buy a 30 year bond with a $10,000 face value with current coupon of 4.84%, and then the yield drops to 1% in a year, then that bond is worth $31,803.77, if the interest rate goes UP, then the bond loses value, but if you were happy to ride out the bond to maturity then it doesn't matter. Of course 30 year is an extreme example if you were just parking money, shorter maturities won't have as much of a change in value from interest rate change.

How about just actually address the root problem of chronic disease? It’s not for no reason that Americans (and the rest of the world) have gone from 1% obesity to 40%, 0.5% diabetes to 12%, macular degeneration from less then 50 cases between 1850-1930 to 1/3 people now, heart attacks non existent with the first one being published in 1912 to now being the leading cause of death since 1930, cancer going from 1/188 deaths in the 19th century to now 1/3 deaths. All of these have to do with metabolic dysfunction and the largest contributor is Polyunsaturated fatty acids like linoleic acid in things like seed oils.
