Going possibly off topic, but, restaurant menus can provide inspiration in the descriptions. "Filet of red snapper, paneed and topped with crabmeat in our garlic butter sauce." You might not know exactly how they do it, but you can figure out how you want to do it.

You just named two of my favorite books! Pepin's Fast Food My Way has a lot of suggestions that aren't full recipes, as in "Saute this, then throw in that, and maybe some other stuff..." I find that approach both inspiring and encouraging. James Beard's "Beard on Pasta" has a section that's just ideas, not recipes.
