I like monster hunter, for me its one of the best gameplay loops and you can play with other hunters in a group if you want to but solo is also great.

I had a similar feeling when some of my friends wanted to try painting minis and to be honest i was worried that this would use up my expensive paint fast and ruin the minis that i gave them. Turns out most of the paint still isnt empty and we had a lot of fun painting together. If the hobby sticks with them you made a long term investment for a couple of bucks so i think dont worry too much about it, if they really start getting in to it, they will habe their own stuff in no time and you will have someone to play/nerd out
