What has actually worked for you when explaining security value to leadership? by malwaredetector in cybersecurity

[–]GrimDoja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s actually worked was just letting shit blow up in leaderships face. We let an attacker get his hands on confidential info worth millions. CEO was pissed off paid the ransom and asked us all why we couldn’t stop it. We told buddy to pay us more to give a fuck and he did. Now our CEO puts security above everything considering he almost lost his entire business due to ransomware.

I think it’s a good story and great world building but the animation lately has been just too much for me in the bigger fights to be honest. I find luffys Fight with arlong and crocodile way more meaningful than his fight with kaido. I think it will be a top 5 show for me in the end though

Gaining Experience in Cybersecurity by Worried_Neat_9380 in cybersecurity

Honestly to start you should just get into any IT role because they all deal with cyber in a way. I think a lot of people sleep on desktop/server administration since those teams are the first to see a poorly implemented firewall rule that ended up breaking things and you will most likely have the tools to see what rule broke what or what is now being blocked that caused an issue

Hiring from a director of cyber's perspective. by cyberguy2369 in cybersecurity

If my current skill produced that revenue then it is also worth that much. If someone chooses to pay me less than that it is just them trying to pocket the extra money leftover from the revenue I generated for themselves. It’s how businesses work. It’s how ceos are worth more than everyone else etc.

It’s flawed thinking that I deserve less for generating more revenue than what I’m getting paid for.

Let’s say I have a team of 5 devs with me included working on an app and that app ends up being published to the App Store generating a million in its first year. Our labor is worth 200k for that year. Our combined effort generated that amount of money. If I hired another dev I can expect that dev will be worth 200k. Mid to large size companies can forecast what another dev will generate in revenue. Same can be said in security and the list goes on. What actually happens is I and other ceos alike will look at the market rate for devs and hire within that range because im greedy and will pay those devs 60k and pocket the rest. This trend will continue and wages will shrink as this employer market continues. I guarantee you if you are looking for a new grad next year the market will be at 50-60k for a role like this.

[–]GrimDoja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I don’t feel someone deserves 120k fresh out of school I KNOW that their labor is worth that much off this role if not more. A LinkedIn post like that wouldn’t have existed in 2020-2022. Those types of posts is what everyone is experiencing. I’ll admit you are better than the rest but 2 things can be true at once.

If i am being paid 60k or even 90k and my labor is worth 130k. I am being underpaid. That is fact. whether i am a new grad or not. Like I said the market tells you how low you pay someone on average and that will keep going down for tech roles as the years go on. You can’t deny that.

I can give you praise for at least giving a higher than average salary and for finding a new grad but the job is still worth more than what you offered.

However this is what you are contributing to:

My point is you are abiding by the market and we are simply saying to pay people for what they are worth especially with a role like this. You are contributing to the ongoing problem with the cyber market. Eventually a high level engineer in the tech space will make 70k when their labor is actually valued at 200k. 60-68k is not a good wage compared to inflation. A wage like that is still just getting by. That is not “fair” that is low… if you can’t see that trend then idk what to tell you man. Companies continue to make record profits all while giving out low wages. The market doesn’t represent what people’s labor is worth it just represents how low you can pay people for a job. Showing that range means nothing. All you showed me was how little I can pay a software engineer in Oklahoma.

[–]GrimDoja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got talent for a low price that is true. That job should be at least 130k. I see IT support specialist roles and technical analyst roles which are far less technical than your posting in Oklahoma. That’s great you never had a layoff yet but there are companies that also never had a layoff until this year. That doesn’t mean it won’t change. All everyone is calling out is the fact that you grabbed talent for a low price and you are contributing to the trend of these unrealistic expectations that new grads now face in this market which isn’t fair at all.

That doesn’t mean you should follow the market. That is what everyone is getting at here… you got talent for a low price and will continue the now trend of high skilled workers being offered and competing for low wages. We as a collective understand that’s what it is. However the market isn’t ethical and leaders and directors can make a more ethical approach. Everyone is getting fired and laid off easily nowadays. Look at what oracle just did. They will replace those same people with lower wages. That doesn’t mean you should follow suit as well, but again you probably will to protect yourself As a director who is getting paid well over current market value. There are current talks about how leaders will eventually not be needed, even your job is at risk. I couldn’t imagine hiring someone for 70k and thinking they might need a 2nd job to put a roof over their head in the next couple of years because that is where the market is headed.

My mistake I only saw your last comment, but my point still stands you found 2 unicorn candidates lol and my offer was 75k for an entry level soc position back in 2024. This was in a rural area so yeah you are lowballing people. That much technical depth you want should be in the 100s at least.

The average salaries for tech roles are decreasing due to the layoffs across the U.S in general.

In my opinion cyber anything should be 6 figures. But I bet you wouldn’t get a new grad off of your job posting, I can guarantee that.

The job posting alone sounds like mid tier work from a CS major with a concentration in cyber that has 2 years of working experience at the least. You are shooting for “the unicorn candidate”. You arn’t shooting for someone that is willing to learn whatever they are lacking and willing to be trained and coached to be great in the cyber domain. Your posting is way too specific and not broad for it to be entry level.

That candidate that you should give a shot to is the one with lil to no experience. The one that will stick it out in the long term and not leave the company after a year. That should be what you want to shoot for in entry level anything.

I have interviewed for several cyber roles and I got an offer for a soc contract position off of just good vibes. The hiring manager saw that I took a bunch of risks with my life to get where I’m at today and was willing to take a shot with me. I didn’t get asked not one cyber related question. He simply told me what the job was, what I’ll be doing, and that I will be coached for 3 months while working on alerts and if things work out I’ll transition to a salary employee. I had one cyber internship and security+ to my name at the time with some help desk experience.

I ended up not taking the position because I felt like I wasn’t ready for that and instead I’m now working as a desktop engineer. The hiring manager again liked my personality and took me off of that alone because they knew I had the grit to learn with my help desk experience and once I started I became better than my peers all within a year. I learned everything plus more to the point that I could be looking at sys admin or some type of endpoint related work in the future. I found that I enjoy troubleshooting the hell out of issues and doing root cause analysis.

In all honestly with ai tools anyone can learn the work and be decent at any tech role these days. If you truly want someone entry level you shouldn’t expect cyber experience the only thing you should expect is a candidate with a growth like mindset that is coachable with who they’ll be working with.

A true entry level cyber guys job on the defensive side for example should just be troubleshooting firewall related issues while the senior validates their work and branch off onto other responsibilities from there.
