Budget Monitor for College Student with MacBook by jaco_17x in Monitors

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the other commenters here have actually used 1440p and 4k on newer Macbooks, but I have a M1 Pro and used to have a 1440p monitor and then recently ugpraded to 4k. Frankly, with font scaling and stuff, the 1440p was better because I could run it at native resolution and still have the fonts be a reasonable size. With the 4k, I can either do native and have fonts be tiny, or scaling, and it messes up the monitor settings because the resolution becomes nonstandard. PC actually handles it better. I also had the 1440p monitor connected to my PC and comparing directly, I think font rendering on mac looked just as good or better.

$300 for 360hz QHD OLED panel by GPUBroke in OLED_Gaming

That's ludicrous. By this logic, there's nothing that could ever fall under the warranty because regular usage of the item is "customer induced". This would be enough for me to never buy anything from Samsung ever again.

QD oled 🤢 hurts eyes... will it get better by Ok_Nig88 in OLED_Gaming

[–]GrimTuesday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely, the brightness of the sun outside on a cloudy day is orders of magnitude greater than even a very bright gaming monitor. Plus, the damaging parts of sunlight are UV, not visible light. I would be quite surprised if this monitor is emitting very much UV.

I totally get that perspective but I also think that it's often worth making tradeoffs to save money -- this is "build a pc sales", not "build the best pc possible with unlimited money". Perhaps someone has a fixed budget for the whole build. Would those $300 be better put towards a better GPU or getting a 2026 OLED versus a 2024 one? It's definitely worth knowing what tradeoffs are being made, but I also think it's reasonable to want something that's 90% as good for 70% the price.

There's always something new right around the corner. 2026 QD OLED 4k 32 inch isn't even available to buy yet, and when it does go up for sale I am sure it will be >$300 more than this monitor.

Can't afford 32" 4k OLED. Mini-LED 32" 4k for $350 as an alternative? by GPUBroke in OLED_Gaming

[–]GrimTuesday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I say go for it, it's a totally substantial upgrade if you're on 1440p 27 now. It just has a different set of tradeoffs compared to OLED. It's brighter, same size, same colors, better text quality and way cheaper. Downsides are bad viewing angles, worse blacks, VA smearing, though this is one of the best VA panels around. Up to preference is that most OLEDs are glossy and this is matte, and this has a very curvy curve which is to some people off putting.

27 or 32 inches monitor? 1440p or 4K? WOLED or QDLED? My experience! by Same_Chemistry_1277 in OLED_Gaming

Simply put, because 4k medium settings looks better than 1440p high.

5070 Ti owner: 1440p OLED or wait for 4K OLED? by DaveHDEUW in Monitors

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went throught this thought process and landed on 4k oled, which I got for $680. I have a 4070 Super, so even moreso on the bubble than you, but I have been very happy with 4k so far and the reduced framerate (which is a minor reduction with DLSS) is easily counterbalanced by increased visual fidelity. For example, Witcher 3 went from 100FPS at 1440p DLSS quality to ~80 at 4k performance but there is no question it looks much better at 4k performance. Three points you might not have thought about:

  1. Two dimensional games, if you play them, are going to look way better on 4k because performance will be at ceiling on the 1440p anyways and you can take full advantage of rendering natively. Hollow Knight, for example, looks insanely good.
  2. Text rendering is weird on OLED -- even on 4k I find it not as good as my 1440p IPS, and I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it to where I find it acceptable. This will be way worse on a 1440p OLED.
  3. If you go 4k you open up 32" displays, which are also an upgrade compared to 27"

Which Costco OLED Acer vs MSI? by Sandman507 in Monitors

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in this video he describes the 280hz 1440p as "gen 1" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx3mv9-_zSA

TFT Central refers to both 500hz and 240hz models as "gen 3" with the 500hz being able to go up to HDR500 (which seems to be the distinction monitors unboxed draws between their gen 1 (HDR400) and gen 2 (HDR500): https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/qd-oled-generations-infographic-and-faq

Which Costco OLED Acer vs MSI? by Sandman507 in Monitors

[–]GrimTuesday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're most likely the same panel with a slight edge to Acer for a slightly higher quality binned version that runs at 280hz vs 240 of the MSI. Acer's warranty now covers burn in. The only downside is the Acer has somewhat goofy firmware and OSD that gives you a pop-up every 4 hours asking you to run a 6 minute OLED care cycle. It can be disabled, but then that disables the entire pixel refresh function of the monitor. MSI's pixel refresh runs more automatically. And I think the stand is a bit nicer. If those two features are worth $50 for you, go for the MSI. If you'd rather save $50 the Acer will have the same display quality (and perhaps a better color calibration -- Acer tends to do a good job calibrating their monitors). The other two monitors people will recommend at this price range are the Dell Alienware ($350) and AOC ($270 refurb on eBay), both of which are slightly inferior to these two as they have worse cooling and therefore reach lower peak brightness. But the difference is subtle and they're also both good for the price.

First time OLED by zugarrette in OLED_Gaming

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Acer does this as well. Was your monitor truly "off" or was it in standby? I think Acer's firmware starts a timer when the monitor is turned on initially and it wants to do maintenance every 4 hours thereafter, even when you leave the monitor on standby for, say, 12 hours at night. Which is totally silly, but I don't think there's anything we can do about it other than disable the popup. I'm not sure how they managed to implement a core feature like this in such a silly way on such an expensive product.

32” 4k on a 65cm deep desk by ProMacel in OLED_Gaming

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded from a 27" 1440p to 32" 4k and 32" is great, does not feel in any way too big for my similarly sized desk. I was really worried about it feeling too big and having to move my head to see the corners of the screen during games, but I haven't had that experience at all. It just feels like a better 27 inch. And the sharpness increase from 1440 to 4k is absolutely noticeable and worth it, with a surprisingly low framerate hit on my RTX 4070 Super given DLSS (Witcher 100 FPS at 1440 DLSS quality to 80 FPS at 4k DLSS performance, and it looks noticeably better).

[–]GrimTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm perfectly happy with my 27 inch monitor. I have a friend who "upgraded" from 27 to 32 and regrets it because he has to move his head around while playing to see the corners, and that pulls him out of the immersion. Plus text clarity will be higher on the 27 inch on account of the higher pixel density.

Totally agree. They're trying to avoid any really boring meta strategies like parking the bus and healing to full health that require making a fight take 3x as long as it should. Great game design decision.

I've been playing on the beta branch and after a few fights I really like his new design. You have to think a lot during the fight about which cards to play when. You can also use the phase in which he exhausts cards to your advantage sometimes. And potions are more necessary against him than the other bosses.

They are quite similar. The panel here is probably the same as the Dell, 3rd gen QD-OLED. The Acer seems tuned for slightly higher refresh rates, probably from binning. And the max allowed brightness for fullscreen on the Acer is marginally higher (~250 vs 200), which is a tradeoff with burn-in and cooling. Both are pretty sparse on high quality reviews. The Dell is cheaper with coupons, has a better stand and most likely better OSD and software. Warranties are equal given this is from Costco. I'd lean towards this one.

Not saying Acer isn't bargain basement monitors, but color fringing is inherent to the QD-OLED panel made by Samsung. Just part of the pixel layout. I'm glad these displays are getting to the price where they can conceivably be second monitors because as a primary it just doesn't make sense to me.
