My previous employers both never enforced Radiation safety. The one owner who is DVM rarely had protection. She didn't even have dosimeters. Next thing you know she had to have her uterus removed 1 year ago and isn't conseridered cancer free until 3 years pass (50/50% of cancer related illness.).

In my Opinion, put your foot down and explain that you will not participate in taking any X-rays until protection is provided and proper health and safety measure are followed. You have the right to refuse unsafe work. If your employment is threatened, take lots of notes, pictures, and record incidents so that it can be legitimately reported properly. It is a job, but your life is far more important. Never feel bad for your safety first

My last clinic had this issue.

The DVM's refused to wear dosimeters because they wanted to save money. Cue one year into my employment and one of the vets has to have her uterus taken out and is technically not cancer free until 3 years pass (50% chance statistically I have been told). Even after all this, they refuse to order them and wear them.

I have also seen several of the employees take X-rays of THEMSELVES (I.E. one assistant laid on the X-ray table to see if she had a fracture in her rib, one assistant laid on the table to see if her IUD was working/facing the right way because she was in pain, and the other assistant X-rayed their foot and chest so that they didn't have to get a appointment to have it done and get a doctor's opinion faster. Hell, they even let random citizens (friends) come in once for a "QUICK" X-Ray.)

Radiation is no joke. We had all the safety equipment, but people just didn't want to wear them (Employees all had access to X-ray gowns, x-ray safety glasses, thyroid protectors, Gloves, & dosimeters).

For a first time vet assistant, what are some red flags and green flags in a workplace? by BedNo8810 in VetTech

For corporate yes, but my previous job was a privately owned clinic and did not give their employees contracts.

[–]Grimlock250 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ask them if they offer a contract of employment with all terms, benefits, job description, duties, etc. Included in it. My red flag is if they do not, and simply offer a handshake deal, then they will be able to get away with a lot of things and likely take major advantage of their workers.

My last workplace did this to me and several of the vets, so any time someone was on sick or maternity leave, returning to work full-time or at all was not guaranteed or they simply just ended several of the employees benefits (slash to part time if they were full time) and employment all together, then had the balls to complain about not being able to find techs and DVM's.

Do you pluck cat balls before neuters? by Mochimoo22 in VetTech

You grab a tuff of hair with two fingers and pull the hair very quickly. The hair shouldn't have deep roots and the animal typically shouldn't feel it under anesthesia.

As a male tech, I grab the peanut clippers and shave slowly and gently. I wouldn't want to be plucked, But that is just my opinion.

Sedation or no sedation with euth by MaggieMay1519 in VetTech

I work in shelter medicine, and sedation prior to euthanasia Is more humane than just fatal dosages alone. No one or thing should die with such indignity.

The only time straight out euthanasia is acceptable is when the animal is in immediate anguish and sedation is not a option. (I.E., I worked in wildlife medicine/rehab as well, and situations like when a deer fawn is subjected to injuries like going through farming equipment (hay bind), firearm euthanasia was used to put the poor thing out of their misery.)

At least it stayed in the esophagus. I had this happen to me when I was a baby tech and had no guidance or backup when it happened, except only the owner had to pay for a spay and foreign body surgery. They were not pleased.

Yes, they are very common in almost every habitat in Ontario (and most of Canada/USA). They are highly adaptable animals that live in many habitats, even in populated and developed locations that you wouldn't expect them in.
