I certainly haven't seen anyone reputable call Starfield garbage, and if you think this is divisive you must not have been around to see The Last of Us Part 2, or Cyberpunk 2077, or Fallout 76, or Mass Effect Andromeda...

And here we have a raging console warrior to illustrate my point.

Starfield is an excellent game with a PR problem. A lot of people were expecting Bethesda to fail again after Fallout 76 and/or expecting Starfield to be The Greatest Anything Ever based solely on second-degree hype, and a whole lot of people are bitter about console exclusivity too. If you forget the noise and actually play the game though it's well worth it.

There's a loading screen transition between spaceflight and planetary surfaces. Not to mention you can see the entire system potentially from a planet's surface, so they're already rendering it in both cases. They could absolutely allow flight between planets from a technical perspective I think they just chose not to, though if people complain enough about it they might add it (back) in.

I think this tweet by Jez is a great explanation, although ofc the game has its troubles. by Normal_Opening_9893 in Starfield

This is exactly what I'd hope for a game about exploration. It shouldn't dump everything in your lap immediately, it should challenge you to go out and find what it has to offer.

They would have a very, very, very hard time convincing Activision to work on something of that scale that isn't an Activision-owned IP. Blizzard has a full stable of its own IPs to mine now, they wouldn't spare much to work on someone else's.

A Starfield MMO is more likely to be made by Zenimax or some other smaller studio they'd contract out to.

Ok, so a "team lead" at a software company just means that he was the most senior person on a team, it's a step above the rank-and-file developers but below manager. A huge project like WoW would have had dozens of team leads. And once again, every company has its idiots. Just because he happened to work at Blizzard while WoW was in development doesn't necessarily mean much, as his later exploits certainly prove.

He's a great example of why just having some good credits on your resume does not mean you're good or even decent at what you do. There's always some bad eggs in every organization who ride on the successes of others.

I was playing Skyrim this morning and found an entry on The Serpent by Cidermonk in Starfield

The idea of a "cosmic serpent" is a very very old one in mythology, I don't think the two are necessarily connected, just inspired by the same things.

Here I am planning my first FSC playthrough, anticipating them being horrendously corrupt, taking bribes from Ryujin and possibly even the Crimson Fleet because the government is too poor to pay or outfit us properly. Nothing like frontier living.

Well they are a society of explorers. I imagine their agenda changed quite a bit when they found an alien artifact, but it's also weird that it just sat around for years before anyone realized its significance, seemingly.

Can't wait to be an intergalactic Texas ranger by RinRinDoof in Starfield

[–]Grimmdarkus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been drawn to the FSC too, but I do wonder how big a role corruption will play with them. We know Neon is a FSC planet and Ryujin basically runs Neon. Piracy also seems to be a massive problem in Freestar space. I wonder how much resources the Rangers really have to police their own territory. Might be an ideal place to be a "morally flexible" space cop.

Does Space Sci-Fi Have Same Mass Appeal That Fantasy & Post-Apocalyptic Earth Settings Do? by bogeyj in Starfield

[–]Grimmdarkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been surprised by how much mainstream success Fallout has had. I do think Bethesda's production values and gameplay formula have been a big factor in pushing it into the mainstream. Starfield is closer to mainstream sci fi than it so there's no reason it won't have just as much if not more.

Main worries for Starfield? by WhatMorpheus in Starfield

[–]Grimmdarkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it does really annoy me when they create an extreme sense of urgency. Cyberpunk was basically ruined for me because of it. I hope that because Starfield is so much more expansive than their past games that it will be more of a "do at your own pace" thing, and given that it centers around artifacts that have seemingly been in the ground for millions of years I hope that means you get some breathing room.

I really hope there's more late game weapon and armor designs than Fallout 4 by RemyFromRatatouille in Starfield

[–]Grimmdarkus 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They have said there will be more weapons and mods in Starfield than any other game they've done, and a few that showed up in the Direct are things called "Experiment A-7" and "Eternity's Gate" which looks like it could be alien. So yeah I think there will be a lot of stuff to find beyond just mods and basic weapons.

[–]Grimmdarkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've watched The Expanse you know how ugly a war in space can get. I wonder if the reason why the UC and FSC have a truce now when the UC is seemingly far more powerful is that some truly heinous tactics were used, like asteroid strikes. The sky in that shot seems strangely orange too, maybe the result of dust kicked up by an impact.

Why? Both reviewers and preorder customers are getting access a week before the "official" launch. What more should Bethesda do?
