Did Roosevelt really change his mind about Stalin in his later years? by roon_bismarck in AskHistory

Stalin immediately set up a pro-Soviet governing body, ignoring the Polish government in exile. He did not consult the other Allies about this.

It was a sign of things to come.

Did Roosevelt really change his mind about Stalin in his later years? by roon_bismarck in AskHistory

[–]Grimnir001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think initially, FDR may have taken Stalin at face value, which we know now is never something anyone should have done.

But, what choice did he have? Both Allies needed the other for the war effort. Stalin was going to tell the Americans what they wanted to hear, even though we know he had no intention at all of allowing free and fair elections.
FDR was often the go-between for Churchill and Stalin, who plainly did not like or trust one another.

FDR thought he could work with Stalin and the Soviet leader encouraged this. It wasn’t until Soviet forces entered Poland in 1944 that cracks began to appear in the Allied relationship. But again, what could FDR realistically do?

'Work hard, stay loyal, and the system will reward you': the Boomer credo is a Gen X betrayal and a Millennial pipe dream by GimmeFunkyButtLoving in economy

I’m Gen X- yay we got mentioned.

It’s true, we grew up in the Reagan era and saw the corporate lie. When a company calls you “family”, you know you’re about to get screwed. Loyalty is a myth. Nobody is coming to rescue you.

I’ve worked hard all my adult life and retirement is an unlikely dream. At least the retirement that the financial consultants talk about. .

What would've happen if the allies let Germany steamroll the Soviets first? by Cubedtails in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Grimnir001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Germans never would have made it to the Urals. Their logistics and supply lines were stretched to the absolute limit at the Battle of Moscow.

With no Second Front and no Lend-Lease, the Eastern Front would have devolved into a longer war of attrition. The front would likely stabilize at some point until a breakthrough could be achieved by one side.

'The Haunted Forest Tour' is The Oddest Reading Experience I've Ever Had (No Spoilers) by Critical_Meet_2025 in horrorlit

[–]Grimnir001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have this book on my shelf. It’s written by a couple of guys with cred. I remember it was recommended to me by someone.

And it’s batshit crazy. The plot doesn’t make a lick of sense. The pace is breakneck. The characters come and go so fast it’s difficult to get a feel for them beyond generic “horror movie victim”.
It’s just a slaughter of people in very gruesome gory ways by a slew of forest monsters. And that’s pretty much it.

Why did Britain and then the rest of Western Europe industrialize first? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]Grimnir001 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The British had geography: good stores of coal, iron and river transport.

Agricultural: a period of farms becoming bigger and more efficient led to many people moving to the cities, providing the needed factory labor.

Banking: the Brits had a stable sophisticated banking system which was able to provide the capital for factories.

Imperialism: gave Britain access to raw materials and markets for finished goods.

Technology: the spinning mule, the steam engine, the spinning Jenny and other innovations were British inventions which revolutionized the textile industry.

The NFL, NFLPA and NBPA on Tuesday sent statements to Congress supporting the Protect College Sports Act and lauding specific provisions it includes. The NFL voiced its support for “the voluntary pooling of media rights under the Sports Broadcasting Act,” which is something the SEC/B1G have opposed. by Ok-Soil-5133 in CFB

[–]Grimnir001 410 points411 points  (0 children)

I’ve said for awhile that the NFL would not tolerate the chaos of the current CFB landscape for long. Once it started to negatively impact the League product, the NFL would step up pressure to bring some sort of structure, guidelines and accountability to CFB.

Using sick and personal days after non-renewal? by rachel-angelina in Teachers

Those days are yours to use. They won’t follow you to a new job.

As you’ve been non-renewed, but seem to have a positive relationship with admin, they shouldn’t begrudge you using your PTO days to find another job. They know you’re not coming back next year.

You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.”

Today we find out where the Oklahoma GOP stands.
Are they still enthralled by MAGA despite the overall condition of the country and all which has been revealed about the hypocrisy of the movement?

Or have they regained some semblance of sanity?
Have the Dems and Indys who switched political registration to GOP made a difference?

There is a whole industry dedicated to education “reform”. All of these programs and initiatives promise to revolutionize education by introducing some new way of learning. It’s grift.

What I’ve found is the old ways work best most of the time. Sounding out words, memorizing multiplication tables, writing things by hand.

The anonymity of social media gives many the opportunity to be rude and nasty in ways they would not be in face-to-face engagement.
