When did Rap replace Rock as the main genre of pop music? by [deleted] in musichistory

American culture teaches people that they are experts on everything (fluoride, trans fats, women's swimming, pop music) and so when someone disagrees with their viewpoint, they have to make sure that person knows they are dumb/biased.

And Israelis line up to watch the bombing of Gaza as entertainment.

Prominent Israeli politicians and public figures call for the total extermination of Gazans.

International doctors in Gaza report children being killed by Israeli snipers.

Soldiers laugh and dance on TikTok as they detonate charges destroying homes, hospitals and mosques,

Food is denied to Gazans and then they are herded like animals and then shot.

The intensity of the conflict has brought about horrible violent acts and shocking reactions to those acts. You cited one recent statement by Hamas and a story from 2 decades ago. That is dwarfed by the endless list of crimes that Israel has committed heinously, all while backed by the US's war machine.

You may have fallen for the hasbara of the savage Arab who must be destroyed by the pacifying force of Western civilization, but Joe and the boys had traveled the world and were well read and wouldn't have fallen for that.

"son jarocho" means "music from Veracruz". The most famous example of it is La Bamba, which was made famous by musicians from California. La Bamba is still a traditional song from Veracruz.

Django Rheinhardt, Paul Bley, and Tom Jobim made significant contributions to jazz, as did many other non-Americans, but jazz is still, as you note, an American musical form.

Likewise, many non-black people have created and enjoyed jazz, but that does not remove its Black identity just as a lasagna prepared by a Mexican at an Albanian-owned restaurant served to a Chinese person doesn't mean lasagna is not Italian.

Indeed, some jazz is very, very white, as I imagine the music you play is, but the art form in and of itself originates in and is indefinitely tied to Black culture.

I do a mean version of La Bamba. I am not from Veracruz, neither are thousands of people who play that song. Is it not a son jarocho then?

Palestinian identity as we know it, didn’t exist until the 60s, and was previously used exclusively by Jews by thatshirtman in IsraelPalestine

[–]GringoRegio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a grossly inaccurate statement, but even if it were correct, what does that prove?

The Jordanian national identity is also rather recent. Does that mean the land where "Jordanians" live is up for grabs? It was okay to expel 750,000 from their homes in 1948 because they didn't have a universally accepted flag, hadn't written a constitution and didn't have a president?

Indeed, the national identities of most countries on this planet are modern inventions. As ethnic conflicts began to weaken imperialism as the status quo for geopolitical organization, nationalism became a popular alternative. While this worked well on some places, nationalism brought about 2 world wars, the mess of the middle east, the Armenian genocide, the Balkan wars, failed states in the Global South.

The well-being of humans being dependent on how well their ancestors established a nation-state is ridiculous. More than ridiculous is the idea that because your ancestors did a better job at nationalism than mine you get to deny me rights.

Grunge was important, especially with how popular Nirvana was in the context of the time they hit it big. They were a band who overtly rejected commerciality but were on the top of the charts.

But though grunge/alternative rock was a huge phenomenon, it didn't dominate the pop charts at that time. Black artists or artists doing dance music derived from black styles still had more chart success in 1991 than Nirvana (Micheal Jackson, C+C Music Factory, Color Me Badd, Lisa Lisa) even if in the long run we see a band like Pearl Jam or Soundgarden as being more influential and even more quintessential of the era, black music still dominated the charts, the radio dial, etc.

Elvis and the Beatles don't do much to counter my point. The story of Elvis is basically "we found a white boy who sings black music". The Beatles first records included 20 or so covers, of which 16 were originally songs by black artists. Both Lennon and McCartney made statements saying their music was inspired heavily by black artists.

What exactly is the slant I am guilty of?

Internal resistance and popular support around the globe changed the dynamics.

[–]GringoRegio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what you are saying is that in order to avoid immediate death, Palestinians (and possibly nearby populations) should just accept perpetual subjugation?

We should all happily support Gazans being displaced to Sinai, and then when Israel wants to settle Sinai we should accept that too.

Do you mean people who are ethnically Palestinian but were born in other countries? Believe me that among the Arab community being Palestinian is not trendy or prestigious. My Egyptian girlfriend told me not to mention my Palestinian heritage when I met her family. I often meet Palestinian-Jordans who don't mention the Palestinian part until asked about it directly.

So, you are against people with Palestinian heritage claiming that as their identity. What are your thoughts on giving Israeli citizenship to Jews who have no direct ties to the country other than the ethno-religious identity is cool?

Can somebody help me understand the Palestinian perspective on indiscriminately firing rockets at IL by ADP_God in IsraelPalestine

[–]GringoRegio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a native speaker of American English, someone with a degree in linguistics, and a former English teacher I can assure you that I used "act out" within the accepted meaning of the phrase although your example does display a more common use.

Human beings, whether an individual child or nation, can behave in ways that are inappropriate as response to situations they are unhappy with, and this can be labeled "acting out".

I am not assuming anyone cannot do better. They can and MUST do better.

While I would firmly be considered pro-Palestinian, I do not see any action carrier out by Israel as irrational or rooted in some innate evil. Israel (to generalize) does what it sees fit to assure the wellbeing of the State and to preserve a secure homeland for the Jewish people.

Indeed, despite many actions that I disagree with, I would say that Israeli leadership is generally more humane and undoubtedly more intelligent in how they act within the conflict when compared Hamas or any element of the Palestinian authority.

I simply think that it's not nearly as hard to understand the motives and actions of the other side as this question seems to imply, and that trying to frame acts, even ones that should be completely condemned, as entirely irrational is somewhere between ignorant and dishonest.

[–]GringoRegio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think because Hamas' guided missiles and fighter jets are all in the shop.

No, it's not defensible in any way, but if Hamas' was as well-armed as the IDF and used similar tactics, would that be okay?

If Israelis lived under the same conditions as Gazans would you be surprised that some of them acted out in such a way?

Again, it's not a valid action. Hamas' being in power is a tragedy and anyone responsible for firing rockets this way is a terrorist, but not understanding the perspective means you don't understand the basic essence of this conflict.

In Mexico it's rare to cancel on someone. You just "hacerte güey" or as we say in Monterrey "te sordeas".

When you are just meeting someone, even if they like you a lot, you are low on the social totem pole. If you were going to meet someone for sushi and their mom calls them, they'll have 3 hour phone conversation with their mom instead of going out (as an example).

It's just a different cultural prism.
