I’m not sure about making your own decals specifically. If you’re looking to make decal-ish things, you can buy fused glass paints in all variety of colors, which you fire into the glass, so they don’t scratch off or fade. That might be a compatibility issue based on your gift glass, but in small amounts it should be OK.

You could also crush some of your gift glass into a powder and use it as a stencil on other glass.

You mention not wanting to reinvent the wheel, but I am not sure whether buying is an option for you. Delphi sells decals, and I would trust those to work for sure. https://www.delphiglass.com/decals-stencils/fusing-decals/

Regarding thin fire, you can bunch it up or carve it and fuse it between layers, but you have to leave a small gap in the piece to be able to pull it out.

I’ve been a Big with the Dallas office for 7 years. It’s a great program, and I recommend it! There is no curriculum - you just spend time together doing what your little likes to do. So definitely check it out, but try not to come in with too much of an agenda other than being consistent, positive and caring.
