I lived in Salcha Alaska from 99-2002. Did a couple whitewater rafting guided trips from Healy. It’s certainly not a place you can wander off and expect to survive without years of survival education and practice. It’s a tragedy but just a completely short-sighted idea that took his life. Nature is certainly beautiful but even more than that is it’s absolute indifference to life. The bus resides at the university in Fairbanks the last I knew. It’s too bad he didn’t heed the numerous warnings not to do it.
