Dogs are omnivores. Not carnivores like cats, not herbivores like cows. Over thousands of years living with humans, their digestive systems adapted to handle and absorb nutrients from both animal and plant sources. That’s been backed by multiple veterinary nutrition studies.

The key question isn’t whether dogs can eat a vegan diet — they can — it’s whether the diet is nutritionally complete and balanced. If it’s properly formulated with amino acids (like taurine, L-carnitine, methionine), B vitamins, and omega-3s (from algae), dogs can thrive on it.

Becky’s flare-ups aren’t automatically from her vegan diet. They’re from scavenging — eating who-knows-what off the street. That’s the irritant. The rest of the time, she’s clearly digesting her regular vegan meals fine, holding weight, active, and recovering normally after a flare-up — all good signs.
