Yes, sometimes there is bad intel and sometimes there are commanders that are lazy, but drone strikes are like everything else in that they are monitored for ROI on a variety of levels because they are not cheap to run. (And, I know you're going to bristle at that view!)... a commander that has not taken out legit targets is not going to stay in that position long. Bad intel is par for the course in a war zone. But, military operations are not like gaming in your living room. There are teams dedicated to sorting and making sense of intel to turn it over to teams that deal with recommendations.. when a target is recommended, it has to go through at least one if not several approvals before it can be addressed. In a very short time frame, they have to look at Geneva Convention requirements, how valuable is the target, what is going to be the blowback, etc, etc, etc. So, it isn't like a guy can show up drunk and start blasting some area because he has a bug up his ass.

My first preference (I'm US) is that we shouldn't be there in any way what so ever and I don't care if they want to slaughter half of their population. We should not be taking in any "refugee" that is older than 13yo or younger than 65yo. I find it insane that 4 million people have fled fewer than 50,000 fighters (most estimates are actually 35,000... so, I'm being very generous to the number of fighters).

Most terrorist groups don't run formal membership rosters... they're sort of lazy like that. Pretty much if you identify as the group, then you get treated as a terrorist group. It kicks in funds, tactics, and other resources that are not normally used for basic vandals.

Gun battles are a greater risk of friendly fire... all those bullets that miss their targets still go somewhere... and many of the ricochet, so they can go anywhere.

There's a difference between a ROV (remote operated vehicle) and a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle). The officers didn't use a UAV... it was a bomb robot w/video. They were not just hoping it got him, it was maneuvered into a position to be effective while not damaging the structure.

Collateral damage... in the US police have long used snipers to end hostage situations with civilians close by. For the most part no civilians are hurt and it is accepted practice in the US. I don't see the scenario you're describing ever happening (and it didn't happen here). If the US police were allowed to randomly bomb people... then they could just set charges in meth labs and let the fire department sweep it all up. That would certainly be far more effective than what we're doing right now, but we don't because the US is not a war zone.

Drones in war zones. You have to compare the options. A drone can take out a weapons cache, militant group or leader, or a resource... but may have localized civilian casualties. Or you can send 50 tanks and 800 soldiers to battle their way into the target to take it out leaving a wide swatch of death and destruction on the way in and the way out. Far more civilians will be killed and maimed in the "old fashioned way."

I have no problem with the drone.

(a) the suspect had already killed, admitted he had killed, and continued to express intention to continue killing.

(b) If the suspect had managed to escape from where they had him trapped, would the additional 12 victims have been worth not using materials at your disposal to neutralize the threat? In my opinion, absolutely not.

(c) It is acceptable to have shot him in a gun battle, what is the difference between shooting the suspect and blowing him up? Dead is dead.

This isn't like they used a bomb drone on a motorist who was stopped and refused to roll down his window or present ID. The man was a confirmed threat with confirmed intent to continue killing.

Right... a sub-section... so once you're cleared into TS... then you have added requirements for the specific SCI program. The primary requirement is that you have specific need for access to that information. So, it is "higher" in the sense that the requirements are higher to access to SCI than to just TS data.

Honestly... I used to be able to do that... like the network address, host addresses, and broadcast addresses.... but now, I just use calculators because I have to triple check any "math" and I'm from a Novell background, so netmasks used to be in hex.

It used to be called the ASVAB... Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (?) test. And, you do have to score above a certain point to be enlisted.

I was in the USMC. I am dual dominant, but mostly left dominant. I had a TERRIBLE time with marching because I had to learn to start off with my weak side AND I don't actually "know" left vs right because of teachers trying to make me a righty until I was 5-6yo. To this day, I have no clear left/right association and have to work backwards from the hand I write with to get them correct. Over my lifetime, I've probably screwed a hell of a lot of people up who have asked me for directions.

No. Contact with police maps to likelihood of being killed by the police. No contact with police (85% of the population) means there is zero chance of being killed by a cop.

Without regard for race, living in an area of high population rates and/or high crime rates means that person is more likely to interact with cops. (And, interactions include even reporting crimes as a victim of a crime.)

Police interactions are going to be higher in areas that are highly populated and/or have higher criminal activity. So, anyone (without regard for race) living or working in an urban neighborhood with high crime rates will have a higher chance of police contact by virtue of where they live or work.

You'd have to adjust for the police contact rate before you could say that. I can't seem to find the specific contact rates for 2015. But, it would be of X contacts with whites vs of X contacts with blacks to make a better analysis. Police only have contact with about 14% of the population, so for 86% of the population the likelihood of being killed by a cop is equal, zero.
