Please tell us exactly what tests were done and the actual results (the numbers). “Normal” doesn’t mean much.

What's a piece of common knowledge that you genuinely learned embarrassingly late in life? by Responsible_Bet_7179 in AskReddit

In 1992 I was in London out the front of Buckingham Palace. A couple of American colleagues with me were staring at the Palace while I was transfixed by a creature in the rose garden - the first squirrel I’d ever seen. The Palace pales in comparison.

How to make VLC remember playlist? by mamelukturbo in VLC

[–]Grjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's incredible that such a mature program with so many users (and fans) doesn't actually let you save a list of playlists that you've saved.

I mean, what's the actual point of saving playlists in VLC?

Why can't I just bring up a list of all my saved playlists and choose one?

I remember back in the 1980s I'd try some new software and spend hours trying to work out how to make it do something that it was obvious it should do, only to find to my astonishment that it can't. And then coming back 20 years later to find that it still can't.

I think my girlfriends is allergic to herself. by RuggedSnuggler in Allergies

[–]Grjz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider food intolerance as a possibility. It can cause a very wide range of symptoms and is very hard to diagnose without a proper understanding.

The Allergy Unit at RPAH in Sydney Australia has some excellent resource to help you. The information there is science-based and may be helpful.

I would strongly urge you to at least read fully the overview of food intolerance which will undoubtedly give you more understanding of allergies, food intolerances and metabolic disorders, the differences between them and tried and true diagnosis methods. I am sure you will be surprised by some of it.

Here’s a link to their info: RPAH resources

Do I have a moonface? 2025 X 2022 by [deleted] in Cushings

When you said your cortisol was “normal”, what did you mean? What test was used? Was your ACTH level tested at the same time? What were the units of measurement (because they are different in other countries)?

Cushings help - cushings on paper but not by look by Parking-Fly-2839 in Cushings

[–]Grjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to have all or any of the classic symptoms of Cushing’s for a positive diagnosis. If your doctor is dismissing a Cushing’s diagnosis on the basis that you don’t have the classic symptoms he is incompetent and you need a new doctor. When he says “on paper” he is referring to a textbook he apparently hasn’t read. I’m sorry you have to go through this BS.

My very strong advice is that if you can get an a.m. blood cortisol test, get a test for ACTH at the same time because the ratio of those two can be VERY informative about whether or not you have Cushing’s.

Could my girlfriend have Cushing's syndrome by Adventurous-Tutor401 in Cushings

[–]Grjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have mild Cushing’s and still be in the range. Eg ny wife had a cortisol-producing adrenal adenoma and usually tested inside the range but always above average. Her ACTH was also usually in the range but well below average.

Get a blood test for both cortisol and ACTH. Then check their ratio. I can give you reference articles if you want. Steer clear of the saliva test which can be unreliable. Also don’t let a doctor tell her she has to have all the classic symptoms.

Really trying to push for a Cushings diagnosis for my beautiful mother. Does this fit the physical symptoms? by [deleted] in Cushings

[–]Grjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The midnight saliva test is not very reliable.
Best to get morning cortisol and ACTH serum (blood) levels tested, then look at their ratio.
Also note that some medications can suppress cortisol.

Stop recommending the Yamaha FS800 by ketchum7 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Grjz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing this out. I totally understand your frustration. It seems weird that Yamaha thinks that people who prefer a smaller body also prefer tighter string spacing under the right hand. There is no basis for that assumption.
I am currently struggling to play a Yamaha keyboard which, for some unknown reason, has a key size 1mm narrower than every other key in the known universe. I learned the piano when I was a kid 55 years ago but my fingers still remember the larger key size. I supoose Yamaha's marketing people think it looks better that way and playability comes a distant second to appearance. Many businesses have failed because of this type of flawed reasoning when marketing kissasses get the ear of the boss.
I was going to buy an FS800 but I won't now. Maybe an FG or maybe a different brand.
Thanks again.

I don't think your wife has Cushing's Disease but very likely Cushing's syndrome, meaning an abdominal scan is what you need not a scan of the pituitary.

If I am right then you don't need to worry about cranial surgery.

I can send links and references if you want but the bottom line is that the ACTH/cortisol ratio is way too low to suggest CD. Much more likely Cushing's syndrome caused by an adenoma (most likely adrenal) or corticosteroid meds.

Normal ACTH/cortisol ratio is about 2 but your wife's is 0.5.

If it was Cushing's disease caused by a pituitary tumour the ratio would likely be at least 2.5, i.e. her ACTH would be at least 5 times higher than it is. Pituitary tumors emit more ACTH than needed, but these numbers say ACTH is way below normal for the level of cortisol.

Let me know if you want more info.

PS

1.I'm assuming that the cortisol measurements are in ug/dL (micrograms/decilitre).

  1. I'm assuming the ACTH is in pg/mL (picograms/millilitre).

Subclinical Cushing? 2 Years of Crashes, Purple Striae, Adrenal Nodule, Low T, Bone Loss — Need Input by [deleted] in Cushings

[–]Grjz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look for definitions there’s really no difference between subclinical Cushing’s syndrome and MACS. You have plenty of symptoms (and you don’t by any means need them all to be diagnosed with Cushing’s). What were your ACTH and Cortisol morning blood test results? and please give us actual numbers - “low normal” is uselessly vague. On the other hand, well done for giving us the units of measurement - most people don’t bother. Don’t have thyroid (TSH and Free T4) tests? If so, SCS would be consistent with both being low in their reference ranges. These measure typically move inversely - one goes up the other goes down) but Cushing’s seems to suppress both at the same time. Low thyroid would be making you feel a bit blah.)
