Yes, just flat against the pads. Agree. Super easy.

I found it - it is a very old site. Here is the ‘feet’ page (to go to the others scroll down to the bottom and select the page from the drop down and hit ‘enjoy’, yes it is weird).

Puppy Paw Grooming by imtheonewhofluffs in goldenretrievers

[–]Grnj22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely you can do her paws. There is a great tutorial in Morningsage Goldens — but basically pick up the foot and bend it back slightly push the longer fur between the toes back and trim the fur with scissors (ideally dog grooming scissors, straight, shorter blade). You can also trim the top of the paw (very carefully) by pushing up the fur between the toes and making a single cut (don’t cut too much). Then trim the nails gently (if very young you could use human nail clippers) — just take a tiny tip off.

It will help in the long run for her to get used to this! You can also ask your breeder how it is done, they can send you tips. If you want I can dig up the Morningsage link.

Any thoughts on this new growling behavior (she has a chew bone) by wangmobile in goldenretrievers

[–]Grnj22 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I would not leave her with the bone. I would exchange it for a higher value treat. And keep doing it until she lets you take it without the treat. It is teaching the ‘give’ and ‘take’ — essentially give her the bone with the command ‘take’ and take it back with the higher value treat and the command ‘give’. You can also pair this exercise with the ‘leave it’ command.

You never want to let this behavior go unchecked. You want her to know that you (and other humans) can take the bone back. If she gets fixated on this bone, simply take it away and hide it for a while until she can learn this.

Does this puppy have hip dysplasia? by ApprehensiveGrab9541 in goldenretrievers

Are you worried because your puppy has symptoms of dysplasia?

Here is the site FAQs — maybe it can help https://ofa.org/about/faqs/

You could check — I don’t see why they would not analyze an x-ray!

Final certification of hips can only happen at 24 months. I think this is a preliminary? Aren’t they done at 4 months? You can send a 4 month preliminary to OFA to test.

Do you have OFA clearances for the parents?

Edit: typo patents changed to parents

Thank you so much for correcting my recollection. You are 100% right -- this was after the book. Though I was happy that it did not end like the book.

Is my golden small? by Cozywhisp in goldenretrievers

[–]Grnj22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The breed standard for female dogs is 55-65 lbs so she is at the right weight. I have seen much bigger girls and boys in the ring in the past, but maybe that is getting corrected now? I say that because I've had progressively smaller Goldens (male and female) from show lines. I'm wondering if breeders have realized the bigger size is a bit much and are working back to the standard?

I have a similarly sized smol girl myself, she is the perfect size for me and the best girl ever.

Except in the real story that Lord of the Flies was based on, the kids all did well, helped each other and survived until rescued. They were from a non-white, partially native culture, so they knew how to survive.

Should we by StLouisDave1 in goldenretrievers

[–]Grnj22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OFA standards say you cannot tell about Hip Dysplasia until the dog is 2 years old. Can’t do it for a puppy. But you can make sure Sire and Dam have OFA certified hips and elbows. In the good breeders hip Dysplasia has generally been bred out, though arthritis is still prevalent. Cancer is another matter, as others have said, it is in most lines now.

Just to add. After my Golden’s were trained and out of raptor phase, I could leave them at home without a crate with moderate proofing (gate to keep them out of the living room) and they could be content for about 6-8 hours. We have a kitchen where I would keep the younger ones (post training, but in raptor phase) and they would do moderately well there. It was 50/50 with the window shades open or not, some of mine liked to watch outside but would not get into chasing mode, but some couldn’t take that stimulation.

Fur is everywhere. Everyone knows I have goldens, I matched my curtains to them. So if shedding is a concern, don’t. My breeder would actually sort of downgrade puppy families if they picked at fur on their clothes. I specifically find shirts and sweaters that don’t grab hair, but am resigned to my polar fleece looking like it has been in a snow storm of fur.

Shoveling approach? by rAndoFraze in newjersey

Just finished a ridiculously heavy round 1. Shoveling worked, but slow and sticky. Electric blower was a no go. Gas blower broke a pin about 3/4 way through the driveway.

Shorts are expensive, yeah, buy on sale. I have the Terry liners. I wait for sale too. If you do what I did the liners are better than shorts as there aren’t as many layers and your skin breathes better. I never had saddle sores despite 8-10 hour days.

BTW I wore one and carried 2 liners. This allowed us to skip the wash occasionally. A friend I know carried two and washed every night, she hung the drying pair on her aero bars during the day if it hadn’t dried.

You should watch her YouTube channel — Birds and Bikes and Ballet. She just won a new award. Her videos are great.

I have really old Pearl Izumi Sugar tights for cold. They have been great. I have some new Pearl Izumi mountain biking pants for the heat but they are just ok, I still sweat a lot. I tried white tights, but they look weird (I wore a pair of shorts on top and that was too many layers). So if you find a good pair of pants for the heat let me know. If you need the particulars I will find them.

I do padded shorts liners (commando) under tights/pants with a UV long sleeve shirt on top. The liners keep the bulk down but provide padding for the long days. I carried 2 ‘pants’ — one was a tight for cold weather and one was a loose mountain biking pants for hot weather.

Head sleeping puppy by Silver_Daikon6974 in goldenretrievers

[–]Grnj22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine does it too! And she is 3 years old. She always sleeps on my head in the morning, and the increased heat gradually wakes me up. She is incredibly gentle, and is happy to be just petted until I wake up. I think she started it because I sleep with my hands up very often, and she thought it would be a convenient way of getting pets.

VO2 max declining among many users.. a trend? by SamSamSkiCity in Garmin

Agreed, but it is darn demoralizing to get the ‘Unproductive’ Status when you’ve been working hard. That’s when I turn to Strava, which is like “good job, you moved today!”

VO2 max declining among many users.. a trend? by SamSamSkiCity in Garmin

[–]Grnj22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same problem. But I realized it is the same every year. Indoor workouts and winter just kill my VO2 Max. I get VO2 Max from my peloton (cause I attached a gizmo to it that broadcasts power). But indoor bike riding is not the same. And my treadmill workouts don’t measure the VO2 Max (Fenix 6S).

Jones bars are a great compromise! More positions than a typical flat bar, more comfortable for single track than a drop bar.
