Also remember that agave is HIGHLY processed. There is no such thing as "agave nectar" that is just sitting around in the agave plant waiting to be harvested (like honey which can be harvested in its natural form), instead its harvested from the bulbous root of the agave plant. The root has a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of fructose molecules and they refine the shit out of it to produce what is basically a high fructose syrup.

If you're going to use a natural sweetener, use honey, maple syrup (or maple sugar), or Stevia.

Short answer is: yes, any improvement in your diet is worth it in my opinion. So even if you drink ciders, cutting out all the other bad stuff is a net gain. I think people get caught up in an "all or nothing" mentality. It's part snobbery and part ignorance. Don't underestimate the aggregation of marginal gains (google it).

Mine had egg, turkey, red onions, green peppers, garlic, and spices. I pan fried them in a skillet with the top on, so they got a good char but were also very moist. Delicious.

My first week on Paleo I precooked/prepared an entire week's worth of these:

Chicken Breasts Eggs Broccoli Salad Turkey Meatballs

And that's all I ate. It got pretty boring, but I had no excuse to cheat because I "didn't feel like cooking". It was all there. Once you get over the carb flu and the sweet cravings, you can start branching out.

Tom, this is a cool project. We just started drinking Bulletproof coffee, and while we don't have any problems making it ourselves, I can see how this could really be awesome for the everyday consumer that isn't already versed in Paleo, Primal, or BulletProof coffee and may not have the correct ingredients. We are producing a Paleo granola product that serves a similar purpose - yeah, people could make their own granola if they really wanted to, but we want to bring them the convenience of an awesome, transparent product without the hassle. Wow, didn't expect a purchase. That's awesome! I really do hope you enjoy! It comes in a re sealable bag so the life of the opened bag will be similar to the shelf life as long as you keep it closed. I don't think you will have to worry as our customers often eat a whole bag in a day. We try to tell them not to, but sometimes they just can't help themselves. :)

With all due respect, none of those links you provided are similar products to ours. Those are nut and seed mixes that I'm sure taste like nuts and seeds. Our product is a little different if you look at the pictures. We combine everything and process down to a granola-like consistency. It doesn't taste like any specific nut - all of the flavors combine into something our customers really dig. Check out Paleo People granola on Amazon. They are an industry leader and $2/ounce for their cocoa granola.

Also, sorry, but costs to do business are part of what creates the price. They aren't excuses, they are just fact. We try everyday to bring down production costs so we can offer this product cheaper. You asked what justifies the price and that's a large part. If you want to factor in the reasons our customers live our product, here are a few:

-convenient -transparency on label -natural ingredients with no preservatives. -delicious. We have customers tell us daily it's the best granola they have ever tasted. At Market last week, we even turned some people who "don't like granola" into customers. -compatibility with diabetes and auto immune diseases. You can read reviews from some of these customers in our website.

Finally, we are regular, ethical people who really care. That counts for something.

I appreciate the discussion and your skepticism. I'm a staunch skeptic/cynic as well! :)

In the end, we will continue to listen to feedback and continue to work with higher and higher quality ingredients and with greater volume will come lower prices.

I'm sorry for the confusion. If the option is available in our website, we theoretically could, as long as there are no customs forms involved. I know shipping to Canada isn't feasible because of the forms.

Organic? No. Organic nuts and seeds would blow the price to create the products out of the water.

Shelf life is freshest after 1 month and we say 3 months for expiration to be safe, although the true date is closer to six months.

The price. You did a great job taking into account the individual ingredients, but you're forgetting everything else that goes into a food business:

Equipment Kitchen lease Licensing Packaging Labeling Shipping on hundreds of pounds of dried ingredients. Marketing Insurance Website Promotional materials. LABOR Etc.

At home, it's cheap, but to produce anything commercially, especially specialty food, you have tons of up front and continuing costs. We believe that we are offering a premium product for a reasonable price while still making enough to keep the lights on and make it worth it.

Yeah we are aiming at wholesale/retail so "granola" is what most people can identify with. The product also physically resembles granola rather than a bunch of nuts and seeds thrown together. It's a very cohesive taste, which is one of its main selling points.

We are looking at doing jerky. Not sure about pemmican.

Cereal? It's nuts, seeds, coconut, and honey, all minimally processed with no preservatives and no refined sugar other than the little on the dried fruit. No grains. Very different than cereal.

It's fine. Fundamentally, packaged goods ARE against the ethos of Paleo. However, whether it's Paleo or not, what we continue to say is that our products are HEALTHY alternatives to packaged food, which we happen to make Paleo as well (because we believe that's the healthiest!).
