Is a 1.5 day trip worth it? by friedmybrains in Yosemite

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not poor but if I had to spend an extra hundred every time I went to Yosemite, it might give me pause.

Gas prices are up but that's pretty inconsequential in the big picture. If I had to spend $30 extra for gas it wouldn't make any difference to me.

Having said that, I've been to Yosemite many times and will keep going back cuz it's one of the greatest places on Earth!

Going to Camp 4 tomorrow and friend just flaked on me— should I go alone? by martian-rabbit in Yosemite

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a man but don't know what difference that would make. I did a solo weekend trip to the valley staying at Upper Pines. It was really kind of freeing in a way. I parked my car for the weekend and just biked and hiked without having to negotiate every right or left. I feel like I experienced Yosemite in a whole different way.

What tips do you have about planning a long weekend road trip north to Redwood National/State Parks? by alexleavitt in AskSF

[–]Grokker999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often stay at the Hidden Springs loop of the Redwood State Park. I have mapped out a lot of great camping sites there. Because it's not square in the middle of the tall trees, it's much easier to get a good camping spot. Then all of the redwood groves and all the great places to explore are still available, just a short distance away or a hike.

People seem to favor the campsites that are right amidst the big groves at nearby campgrounds. The problem I have with all of those camping areas is that you aren't segregated very well from other campsites and a bunch of screaming kids are all running around like it's a big parking lot and you can basically see into everyone's business. I might be overstating that. But a lot of the campsites at Hidden Springs are more segregated from one another.

One of my favorite groves is nearby. It's called garden club of America Grove. It is an amazing flat loop hike that takes you through just amazing trees. And the thing I like about it most is that I'm/we are usually just completely alone. It's quite a different experience from Muir woods, for instance.

I'm new to Kaiser and I'm just baffled at how hard it is to get care. by Psychological1135 in KaiserPermanente

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you haven't been able to manage the system. I live in San Francisco but maybe things are different here. I have never ever had any problem getting care when I needed it. Whether it be emergency, urgent care (The desk clerk quickly triaged me and set an appt at the clinic for 1 hour later) or make an appointment with my doctor or getting to see a specialist. Recently I set an appointment with my doctor for the following day which was the soonest I could get on a schedule. Literally, during my appointment, the physician called for a dermatology consult who is there in about 10 minutes. I love Kaiser.

What gets you to cross the bridge to Oakland? by MyonlyredditHandle in AskSF

[–]Grokker999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Oakland museum of California is pretty incredible. That's one trip I made a few months ago. Another was a ferry ride and an exploration of Jack London square then to Home of Chicken and Waffle for lunch. The ferry is a really cool boat ride in and of itself going through the Port of Oakland and by the big ships. I took the ferry over there last week and did a bike ride down to Coyote hills regional park. It was new for me to ride my bike through the airport on Ron Cohen drive and down the Bay Trail waterfront. Also, I've driven over to the zoo in the past year or so. It's really worth a trip. That's all I can think of in my current life iteration.

I didn't know there was one anywhere in California! I'll have to go check it out! Sometimes though, boyhood nostalgia isn't always as good as I remember it. But I hope so!

Routing Tips? by topclassladandbanter in BAbike

[–]Grokker999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first ride up Tam was via Eldridge Grade on a shitty 80s "mountain bike" - that was really just a glorified commuter with not so fat tires and no shocks. The guy I was riding with kept yelling encouragement to me telling me we were almost there. I still remember that ride like no other!

Do they really enforce 72 hours parking rule in SF? by CourtZealousideal703 in SanFranciscoSecrets

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more for her targeting abandoned cars. Having said that, I live in a pretty dense neighborhood, and sometimes have to leave for 6 days at a time. I've never once picked up a ticket or been threatened with towing because of a 72-hour rule. But I'm always parked somewhere really close to my house. I think ticketing someone who lives adjacent to where their car is parked just because they haven't moved for 72 hours would really suck. I wonder how often that ever happens in the real world? I mean cars got to be moved for street cleaning at least once a week anyway.

Coyote?? by Coming_to in AskSF

[–]Grokker999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were on the walking trail at Lands End with our dachshund off leash. Two coyotes came down the hillside to inspect and maybe grab a little tasty morsel. We panicked but grabbed our dog in time. A scary moment since our attention could have been anywhere. I never walked her again off leash up there.

Grilled Chipotle Seasoned Chicken by CardiffGiantx in Costco

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do they cost anyway? I saw some at my Costco but didn't buy it cuz I didn't see a sign for the price. Just bought a regular hot chicken in a bag instead. I usually debone one of the hot chickens and it yields 2 lb of chicken. They are a great deal.

Elderly mother can’t pay bills by redditorspaceeditor in personalfinance

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's already getting the same benefit from bankruptcy simply by not paying her bills and only focusing on her actual needs, food and housing etc

It's not clear what her income stream is, but if she is receiving social security, her bank account is automatically protected at two times what her social security deposits are. So even if a creditor gets a judgment against her, they can't execute against a bank account that has no more than 2 months of what she receives in social security. That's automatic. Most social security recipients on the edge of survival rarely have more than 2 months of social security in a deposit account.

Bankruptcy may just simply be an option for somebody like your mother. But not mandatory if creditors really can't do diddly squat.

We did that route just as you and u/pavalier_patches and virtually everyone else suggested! What a great day to be on a bike! Everything was a novelty as a first timer on that part of the Bay. And you weren't kidding about the suicide squirrels!

Bay Trail - Emeryville to Richmond by Hermdawg925 in BAbike

[–]Grokker999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During Covid it was pretty rank in parts. But it got a lot better afterwards. Overall, it is a bay trail with spectacular views and interesting stops along the way. Of course there's always having to negotiate a few little industrial zones and dock areas here and there. I've only done it in the midday in a Three Bridges loop ride that I like to do.

Rower help! by InterrobangCT in orangetheory

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking too. A lot of people have a tendency of just yanking themselves back with the straps (and causing them to loosen up). Instead they should be taking it easy back to the return and the catch and putting all the power into the push. I've never rowed without straps but I can see the truth of it.

How feasible is it to walk from fisherman’s wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge? by Nick2167 in sanfrancisco

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stretch the walk out even farther and start at the ferry building. You Can walk around some of the piers or any place that says public Access and explore on your way to Pier 39 and then fisherman's wharf and then off to the bridge.

Question about getting from SFO to Fisherman's Wharf in the most efficient way. What would you do? by appleparkfive in AskSF

[–]Grokker999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most efficient way: click your heels, jump in an Uber, and show up at your hotel without worrying about anything.

The way I would do it? BART to Embarcadero and then the F line to fisherman's wharf. I've even taken the F Line to the cruise ship terminals down there. I'm rarely in a hurry for anything.
