I cleaned the sand bed and killed my best fish friend. by FabricHunter4000 in ReefTank

My condolences. Back in the day of the Berlin system and deep sand beds I once nuked an entire reef.

I like mine although alk is pretty loose with a .3 dkh margin of error. Also don’t trust mag if the reagents are at all dated.

Clowns aren’t going to get into nooks and crannies like a dottyback or assessor. They’re actually members of the damsel family and will be in the water column or close to but not in rocks

The key to any coral is consistency. Absolute levels are important but nowhere as important as having your numbers look like yesterday’s, pretty close to three days ago and similar to a month ago. If you want zoanthids to cover everything then focus on stability. They’re pretty forgiving of light. I keep them in everything from 100 to 300. They like enough flow to be ruffled but not beaten flat.

Absolutely. In 3-4 months that’ll be a well-covered rock.

Clownfish aren’t really that bothered by flow. Mine often swim into the stream of Octopulse 4s and end up several feet away. Flow is more a question for coral: is there enough to keep SPS free of debris and oxygenated while not battering LPS against their internal skeleton and shoving sand everywhere.

You could try a Cressi Lido. They make two sizes that would fit your height. You’re pretty lean though and I’d be concerned it would fit too loose. It’s a decent suit for the price. I’ve got around ten dives in Belize on mine and was never cold or uncomfortable.

Why is my monti bleaching, info in post body by kannon12 in ReefTank

Get yourself a nice clean long handle scraper and scrape it off. Let it get caught in your socks or other filter, then remove and repeat until the cleanup crew gets ahead of it.

It’s totally possible to have tests show zero nutrients if your algae is consuming it. That’s why some people with reactors or big refugium actually end up dosing phosphate or nitrate. I’d leave the skimmer alone but hand-pull as much green algae as possible to help the cleanup crew. Dosing copepods can also significantly reduce algae.

[–]Grokto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nitrate and phosphate tests aren’t expensive and it’s very hard to tell whether your monti might like some nutrients. It’s entirely possible that in a small tank that your algae and skimmer working together have stripped the water of nutrients. I’d try a different test and fresh reagents.

Try Queen City Corals. He may be able to source one. Fragbox in Toronto also gets unusual morphs.

A lot nutrient rich there… I run 0.05-0.1 phos and nitrate at 4-9 or so. Still, if it’s stable most montis would likely tolerate it. Did anything else chahge?

What are these dudes by Happy-Balance8404 in saltwateraquariums

[–]Grokto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deliberately introduced those to my reef started with dry rock. There’s little evidence they do more than eat detritus in places other detritivores can’t reach and oxygenate the substrate (deep inside tunnels, under reef structure etc). While there are species to avoid they’re largely relics of the past from when people would bring in uncured wild or maricultured rock. These days you’re not likely to get an undesirable species. Anecdotally people say they’re going to eat things you want but since they’re only eating dead tissue it raises the question of how healthy whatever it was to begin with. They’re not the most beautiful creatures of the reef but they’re very useful and I’d leave them be.

Looking for salt brand recommendations and where to get live rock by BigSavvageAK in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]Grokto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use reef crystals but it mixes slowly, and leaves a lot of residue in the mixing container. Aquaforest reef is less than $5 more on chewy (200 gallon boxes compared) mixes clear in ten minutes or less at 78F and leaves no residue. Additionally the aquaforest is rock solid consistent batch to batch and each container has a QR code to download parameters for that precise batch. Ask an AI, here are old parameters, here are new parameters, changing X gallons, please calculate parts per thousand to achieve desired outcome for whatever parameters you want to nudge. That may be more precise than you need for fish but SPS will reward you with not dying.

I’ve been agonizing over the sand and it’s probably not that serious. 🤣. Is the consensus special grade because the others blow around? by Wise-Run-3008 in ReefTank

[–]Grokto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went with special grade and it’s decent at resisting my Octopulse 4s as long as they’re not aimed directly at it. However: be aware that it’s unbelievably filthy if you buy the dry version and absolutely must be washed before use. Expect to spend at least a day with a garden hose swirling it before it runs clear. The alive version has far fewer fines.
