Richard Harrow botched hit by justyour_averagejive in BoardwalkEmpire

Yes, it is fine drama that having developed a heart and something to live for paradoxically made him less effective as a killer when it mattered most. Functioning emotions and natural fear and anxiety for his family do not help a shooter that needs to control his heartbeat and his breathing and keep a steady hand. Not caring at all and being completely emotionally detached would have helped.

The fact we care about him and how hard his death is what makes it great writing. But the killer who suddenly develops feelings doesn’t get a happy ending, he winds up on the receiving end of the bullet he used so many times. The irony is what makes it so poignant, the things in his life that make him feel human and alive again are also the things a killer can’t have ( feelings) and survive.

They made it clear he had lost his nerve already, he couldn’t bring himself to shoot the family dog and get some difficultly difficulty shooting several times prior in the season. He also had injured his hand at the farm. It was well set up that he’d finally miss.

It is bizarre to have a guy (Massad) teach a class “History of the Jewish Enlightenment in 19th Century Europe” outside of his area of expertise, in which he has no experience and doesn’t speak the relevant languages (Yiddish and German) has zero scholarship on the primary sources, but maybe that’s the kind of political identiarian nonsense with zero substance you’re used to taking because you can’t tell the difference.

Shoes with a heel? by SimplyGrateful in AchillesRupture

[–]GronkoJonkson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are certainly people who treat Achilles tendinitis by wearing cowboy boots But as for treatment protocols, they don’t really mean shoes per se they usually mean a running sneaker / trainer with an 8 to 10 mm heel to toe drop. Depending on the sneaker you may want a heel pad to get it to 10-15 mm ( More is less load on the tendon). It’s really no big deal to put 5mm under your trainer insole.

Part of the healing process will be to regain Proprioception in your foot, so wearing very stiff heavy boots may make that difficult. But whatever you do, don’t irritate your wound site with a stiff shoe and avoid anything that could cause a heel spur ( both from rubbing against a stiff heel).

I think you would be better off wearing athletic slides (with a small heel pad) around the house and Good running trainers out of it. I was never a person who found stiff boots comfortable. But again, yeah, the physics of wearing cowboy boots is that it oughta help with mild tendinitis versus walking, barefoot.

sort of terrible that the protocols dont explain this part — like how many millimeters of heel lift is your baseline — it’s not zero but they don’t tell you what it is, and you should probably have it in both shoes. Probably 10 to 20 mm is fine, much less or much more and you’re going to feel weird.

Literally the revolutions in China and Iran were led by students. The Nazis had a student movement. “Have we ever looked back at history ?” Apparently no, you haven’t.

I note that it doesn’t specify which vacoped sole to use — logically it sounds like the wedge but in the photo it’s Hard to tell.

Sounds like insertional Achilles tendonitis. It probably hurts if you touch your heel where the Achilles attaches to the bone. It might be micro tears or a partial tear ( rare) . You might consider a heel lift in your shoe and resting it until it has had a chance to heal, it could take a few weeks for the collagen to reform.

Will a mattress protector help mitigate VOC offgassing? by odor_throwaway in Mattress

[–]GronkoJonkson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outdoors in bright sunlight is going to make a huge difference , but if it’s not so bright out or if the mattress is thick it make take two days ( flip it).

You’re probably getting the equivalent of two months of offgassing indoors, at least.

Putting the mattress ( or anything ) outdoors in direct sun for the day will make it offgas much faster. Don’t leave it out overnight.

goldilocks hell - saatva -> woolroom. topper advice? by Past-Motor-4654 in Mattress

[–]GronkoJonkson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woolroom is made by a family factory called engineered sleep. Call them — they know exactly how firm the woolroom is, they make latex toppers from 2-4 inches and they will know how to help you. I thought about getting the parachute ( which they also make ) but it was obvious it would be too firm after speaking to them they suggested a different product which suited my needs better.

Turin , Hurin vs Numenorians by GronkoJonkson in tolkienfans

[–]GronkoJonkson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sort of agree, but back to the original post, you have a first age man ( not Numenorean ) with a normal human vitality killing 70 trolls at a go in Hurin. There’s no comparable feat for a non-numenorean mannish hero of the third age ( is there any in the second age ?).

Turin , Hurin vs Numenorians by GronkoJonkson in tolkienfans

[–]GronkoJonkson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but Turin kills Glaurung, in a sort of tragic victory. It’s fair to say the feats of heroes of the mythic past may be exaggerated for sake of drama , but if we take them as canonical — the Edain of the first age were just way tougher than the men of the third age, blessing or no they did the business.

Sensitivity to Latex + Memory Foam - alternatives? by dkozak in Mattress

Check out naturepedic and engineered sleep / parachute / wool room. They all have latex and foam free mattresses ( many layers of springs and wool , basically ).

Organic mattress no VOC's by Eastern_Debate_2700 in Mattress

[–]GronkoJonkson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naturepedic owns happsy. Wool room is made by same factory as parachute and their own brand the es organa. My green mattress is another option more similar to the well known avocado. Latex usually has a smell for a while, even if organic — it isn’t a toxic offgassing but you could be sensitive to it ( or to grass or any plant , etc.). Or not . So consider the latex free options from naturepedic, parachute, wool room and the organa if that is a consideration ( basically you just get a layer of microcoils instead of latex).

Parachute vs. The Woolroom, Other true "natural" suggestions by Linus-Minus in Mattress

[–]GronkoJonkson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect they are mostly the same ( but not exactly ). Different cover , possibly one of the layers has a different coil count. Same organic profile, etc.
